This letter, written by Walter R. Crickett, a member of the 7th Cavalry at Fort Riley, Pine Ridge, graphically describes the events before and after the Battle of Wounded Knee. A deadly combination of tension, misunderstanding, sensationalism, and mistrust between the troops and the Native Americans resulted in the tragic confrontation at Wound Knee on 29th December 1890. It is estimated that between 200 and 300 men, women, and children were massacred.
