An 1813 Phoenix Iron Works One Penny Coin. Thomas Edington & Sons built four steam locomotives at their Phoenix Iron Works, Glasgow between 1840 and 1841. The locomotives were commissioned for the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway, which was officially opened in 1840 and linked Glasgow with the Ayrshire coast. The gates to the Glasgow Necropolis were cast at the Phoenix Foundry in Queen Street and installed in 1833 to provide access to the "Bridge of Sighs", which carried the carriageway from the square across the Molendinar Ravine to the Necropolis. They were designed by James Hamilton, whose father David designed the bridge, and. The Phoenix Foundry moved to Garscube Road from Queen Street in 1847. It removed once more, in 1890, to St Vincent Lane, and Phoenix Park was laid out on the old site. The firm was commissioned by Andrew "Sweetie" Buchanan (a partner in John Buchanan & Bros, confectionary and jam makers in Cowcaddens) to built the fountain; the fountain along with the park was demolished in 1959.
