My Father fought in the Second World War with the DLI and was seriously injured at the Battle of Mareth, in the North African campaign. One of his injuries was the loss of an eye and this resulted in him having a false eye made to replace it. This was so well made, that as a young lad I never realised this for many years until one day going into his bedroom, by chance, when he was on shift work from the colliery I saw it on the bedside cabinet. His grandchildren were fascinated by the fact that he had this glass eye but sadly he died when they were still young children and had not had much chance to find out more about him. Our daughter was unfazed by this old war wound replacement and athough it might seem an odd momento, she has kept the eye as a fond marked remembrance of him ever since.
