These altar tiles are the last remaining tiles inside Fountains Abbey Church. Originally the base of the high altar, these tiles would also have covered the whole floor of the church. The tiles were both decorative and practical, although Cistercian monks were known for keeping decoration to a minimum.
At this high altar, many services would be made, as Choir monks read from the Bible and sung Latin songs.
