This inkwell was engraved with the initials JMcG RIC - which stands for James MacGibney RIC - possibly to mark his retirement in 1920 (sadly he died in 1922). The RIC was an all-Ireland police force and was replaced in Northern Ireland by the RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary) and the Garda SÃochána in the new Irish Free State. The contributor is officer MacGibney's grandson.
