Historian Dan Snow has been given many things during his research trips around the world. The object that stands out, however, is a piece of shrapnel that was given to him by the owner of the museum in Stalingrad (now known as Volgograd, in Russia).
The shard of metal connects Dan to a series of horrific and violent events that took place during World War II. The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the most significant moments of that war, during which Nazi Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city. The battle, which commenced in July 1942, only came to an end in February of the next year when the German army was finally defeated.
