The collection box belonged to Sir Archibald Geikie. Born in Edinburgh in 1835 Geikie went on to become an eminent geologist. He took a keen interest in volcanic geology and his travels took him to the Isle of Skye and other Western Isles. He also carried out research in Europe and America, particularly the volcanic regions of Wyoming, Montana and Utah. Haslemere Educational Museum has many objects relating to Geikie as he became chairman of the Museum in 1914. Items include letters, field notebooks, photographs, watercolours, personal ephemera, rocks, fossils and minerals. This is just one of Geikie's collection boxes, containing shells from his travels.
