This turned up on a bric a brac stall, in a box of items previously owned by an amateur archeologist. The baboon was associated with several deities in early African civilizations and frequently represented in their art. It seems odd to me that something so meticulously carved and held dear, should turn up in a box of 'rubbbish'.
