Model of Palmer’s First Mailcoach

A one third size model of John Palmer's original mail coach. This was the coach which John Palmer of Bath hired from the Fromonts of Thatcham to demonstrate to the postal authorities on the 2 August 1784. He thus proved that a light-weight coach would enable the mail and some passengers, to be carried at a much faster rate than postboys had done previously. He was encouraged in this by William Pitt the younger.
