My key inspiration for the first piece was commercial Mexico that is popularised in our culture; prior to researching the only things I'd seen of Mexico were in travel brochures and cookery books. Something that caught my eye were chilli peppers, which appear constantly in Mexican cuisine, this was what prompted me to design the skirt with a chilli pepper pattern; I painted a small example of this motif at the top of the page. Also, in a travel brochure a picture of a man in a blue and white outfit with blue swirls painted on his torso caught my eye, this was the inspiration behind the skirt's blue waistband decorated with swirls. The second design was inspired more by the modern music scene of Mexico. My main musical tastes are retro and electric, so I found images of Mexico that tied in with this. I intentionally decided to make a contrast between the black of the dress and the rainbow so that the piece would have more of a 'rock-chick', wild, party look about it, the type of dress which wouldn't look out of place in the night life of Mexico.
