The Screen-Skills TV Craft Bursary

We are delighted to announce that Sam Shetabi is the winner of the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Blast & BAFTA Screen-Skills Award in 2010.

The young Director of Photogrpahy was presented with the inaugural award at this year’s British Academy Television Craft Awards on Sunday 23 May.

We’ve been working with to give young people the chance to learn the skills to make TV happen!

The bursaries allow eight aspiring Scriptwriters, Directors of Photography, Editors and Composers to get mentoring from the cream of the TV industry and get their hands on a £3000 budget to make their new piece of work.

Four out of the eight finalists were nominated for a Screen-Skills award and the winner will be announced at the TV Craft Awards in May 2010. In addition to the placements, they will get a helping hand from a BAFTA-winning expert! Watch clips of their nominated films and read all about their experiences by clicking on their names below.

THIS YEAR'S SCREEN-SKILLS BURSARY WINNERS

Scriptwriter

(To be mentored by Ö÷²¥´óÐã Writersroom)

  • Harriet, 16, Sheffield (Screen-Skills award nominee)

I won the screenwriting category for my film about a toy goblin. I love Bolivia, Green Wing, Franz Ferdinand and Shakespeare. I hate Physics homework and Tutti Frutti flavour. When I'm older, I'd like to write feature films and TV series for a living and travel around the world.

  • Joseph, 18, York

I’m studying screenwriting. Music, film and writing are my passions. Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind and Memento are a few films which really have astounded me…

Director of Photography

(To be mentored by the British Guild of Camera Technicians and the London Film Academy)

  • Sam, 19, London (Screen-Skills award nominee)

For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to work in telly. One day I want to climb the ladder to Exec Producer and maybe even Channel Controller when I'm old and grey!

  • Will, 19, Preston

I started making stop motion animations when I was 6. Whenever I see something good on TV or at the cinema I think to myself, I want to be part of that. My ultimate ambition in the industry is to have my own film studios!

Editor

(To be mentored by Envy and Platform post production)

  • Jack, 17, Bath (Screen-Skills award nominee)

I'm going to try and learn as much as I can and really make the most of the opportunities given to me. I'm so lucky to get the Editing bursary - it'll give me the chance to improve my storytelling and become a better filmmaker all round.

  • Chris, 17, Stoke-on-Trent

I'm currently having a great time studying a BTEC in Media! I’ve recently realised how much I want to work in the television industry. Now I'm one step closer to realising my dream of working as an editor…

Composer

(To be mentored by top industry composers)

  • Joe, 18, Bath (Screen-Skills award nominee)

I could never have predicted this is where I'd be today: getting nominated for the Screen-Skills BAFTA Award, composing ideas for scores, sitting in on recording sessions at Abbey Road Studios and meeting inspirational creatives. Weird.

  • Tim, 17, London

I was amazed and joyful to find out I won one of the bursaries. It’s an amazing opportunity and I’m really looking to everything it has to offer.

'To enter the competition, each individual must enter a video recording, with a maximum run time of five minutes, and 1 GB in size.'

What exactly is the video recording for and what is it meant to show?

Your entry, (using a video camera or phone) can be of whatever kind of TV you want to make - it could be a quiz show or a band performance or a drama or anything you like. If you don't want to be a DoP or Editor, maybe use a friend's film and make the music, or you could write the script and get your mates to film it and bring it to life. Entries will be judged based on the categories above, and not the overall quality.

The age limit is 16 for this competition. This means you will need to be at least 16 by the closing date to be able to apply. If you are younger keep an eye out for other competitions on our site. Lots that we run are for a wider age group!

The video you create needs to show originality in the category you are entering in - so original music (composer) or original script (scriptwriter) as this is what you will be judged on. But the other elements could have been already made or already thought of - although you will need permission/rights to be able to use anything that you haven't created yourself.

      2. Can you put your film up on YouTube now or do you have to wait for the results?
      3. I'm making this film for the competition but have been in touch with a production company because they have public liability insurance for the filming. They are happy to make the film over to the Ö÷²¥´óÐã entirely for no fee. Is this ok or should the production company not take the copyright credit?

U12127486 - You can submit your showreel as an entry. And yes, you can submit the same showreel to enter different categories.

Damien - The video has to be a maximum length of 5 minutes so it can be less than that, but not more.

ThePoirotKid - You will have to fill in separate forms to enter the different categories even if you are using the same video/showreel.

Newagecomedienne - You can get other people to make music for your film as long as they allow you to use it in your film. In the form, there is a question about music copyright so you will need to fill in the relevant details there.

      Hari,

Here are the answers to your questions! :)

      1) Yes you are free to enter your film into other competitions. However, if you are successful in other competitions, you must ensure that your entry is still able to comply with the Screen Skills rules granting the Ö÷²¥´óÐã and BAFTA rights to publish and showcase your work.

      2) Yes you can upload your film to YouTube as and when you like.

      3) As long as your entry complies with the rules, the Ö÷²¥´óÐã does not need copyright credit.

      In answer to your question:

If you use any professional music in your film you will need to give us the details of the artist and track you have used.

The judges will include Andre Newman, a representative of BAFTA and a representative of Blast.

The script should be written for a 5 minute clip or under - if you were to act out the script it shouldn't take longer than 5 minutes. The script can be for any TV genre so it could be a one-off programme or a pilot for a longer series. It is entirely up to you - as long as it is for TV.
