Title: Swallowed the Poison Fairytale

In this painting, which was done as an A level final piece in oil paint, I am Snow White who has become obsessed with the stories of the popular character shown by the books open on pages showing well known scenes of the fairytale. I have just taken a bite from the apple and am dying from the spell that has cursed the apple by the evil stepmother... or so I think! The colour represents parts that are real, and black and white are fantasy and in (my) head. In this painting, I am trying to convey that obsessions are very unhealthy, as when John Lennon was killed by a fanatic and shown by Britney Spears' public melt-down, not to mention the thousands of teenagers who go through depression and sometimes death for being obsessed with becoming waif-thin. I was greatly influenced by Paula Rego's "Swallowed the Poison Apple" as can obviously be seen by the layout of my painting. I have also done a copy of Rego's drawing in the background, but in paint-by-number style which to me is inspiration, in a way, that any famous or brilliant painting can be broken down and recreated in your own unique way.
