Title: Euthanasia

by Zoe from Devon | in writing, fiction

The next thing our daughter was standing staring at my wife who stood over my body with a shining object held between her fingers.
'No.' she shook her head. 'Mum, no.'
'Abi'' My wife began, her hands still shaking and holding back tears herself. Our daughter burst into tears, screaming, and fell to her knees. Her hands shook by her face and her eyes were wide with shock. My wife fell beside her, tears pouring down her cheeks, and she tried to comfort our daughter. The slap of Abi's hand took Debbie by surprise, and her face crumpled with grief she couldn't explain.
'Abi'' She said again. Our daughter hadn't taken her eyes off my lifeless body on the floor. She slowly began to lean forward and crawl towards me.
'Dad?' Her voice cracked between sobs. She gently touched my emotionless face, and her body crumpled into itself.
'No!' She screamed. 'No, Mum, how could you?' Her face turned to look at my wife and her eyes were hurt, unforgiving. She returned her gaze to me and her body was bent over with the gut wrenching feeling of loss and betrayal. Then she suddenly pushed herself to her feet and fear flashed across her face. She backed away, watching my wife, and then turned and ran, her vision blurred with tears.
'Oh God.' My wife moaned; her body bending as our daughters had. Down to her very fingertips she felt emotion so strong as she had never felt before. She could feel the blood rush to her face and tears squeeze out of her eyes.
'Oh God, Hugh, what do I do?' She addressed my still body. She turned my face to look at her and ran her shaking fingers over my eyelids. My body was frail and thin; no longer the person I used to be. In my wife's heart it ached. She wanted to scream and cry but was torn between both love and loyalty.

I have always enjoyed the writing of Jodi Picoult, and she is my inspiration for my latest piece. I wanted to address the issue of euthanasia to make people think about it in more depth. This is only the beginning of my piece, I am currently writing the next part and am in the process of developing the characters to help the reader empathise with them.
