Title: Hue

by Sian from Worcestershire | in writing, fiction

"A good snapshot stops a moment from running away." - Eudora Welty

Imagine a world in black and white. It wouldn't be pleasant would it? No sunshine slicing through the clouds to cheer you up, no blue skies to make you smile. That was what it was like before I met you; my world was grey. How ridiculously silly that I couldn't even see how brilliantly green your eyes were. But that was before us, before you gave me the colours back.
No-one could really understand how..depressing the world is without hue. Your eyes are constantly glazed over with unshed tears, and your breath is permanently hitched in your throat. I never did like those lumps because I could never swallow or speak to you as I wanted to. You wanted to help, you really did. But it never really worked until you smiled at me, one of those beautiful little grinny smiles. The one I fell in love with.
Nothing I could ever say could even come close to how grateful I am of you, so I decided to do it in photographs. Our own special photo album, with absolutely none of them in colour. Weird? To the outside world probably, but not to me and not to you. I'd like to think it was one of our special things, y'know? I don't know, it might just be one of those gay things that only no-one else can understand. Just us, always just us.
I remember the day that I bought the polaroid camera home from work and you were so excited. You laughed everytime I got the camera out though, like a little girl. It was adorable to see your eyes crinkle up and for you to throw your head back in adorable mirth. You always snuggled up and took the photo though, with your insane grin. It was that grin though, the one that brought all of the rainbow back into the picture.
We flick through the photo album every anniversary, and this anniversary is no different. We curled up on the settee and you pointed and laughed at every photo. One photo really stood out though. Our first one ever, the colour one. The sun was melting in the horizon and we were standing in front of the sea, on a little beach somewhere. I kissed you on the lips and smiled, because I know how you're feeling right now. I can see the colours.
Imagine a world in black and white. I dunno about you, but I can't. I have your grin to colour my world.
