Title: When we were young

by Robyn from Lancashire | in writing, fiction

Sat in the sunlight, the two in solitude as the quiet of the night drew itself upon them. The box glistened in the suns fading radiance. The two gazed at it for a while.
'Do you remember when we last opened it?' said the man.
The woman smiled at her husband and slowly nodded.
'We were so young. You were so beautiful.'
The two sat admiring the pure simplicity of the box, and remembered the day when they were destined to be together. The preparation, the worry, the relief, the happiness of their wedding. They remembered the time when they found the box, on that very night in fact, how it had seemed to hold their attention so much, that they could not refuse its mysterious charm. The two could not explain it. The box seemed to hold their hopes and dreams for the future, all that they wanted for themselves and each other. And when they opened it... well, it was like they were seeing the life that they would have together.
'We knew we had to wait to open it again, didn't we my love? You told me you thought it felt right to wait' Said the man. The woman smiled. And wait they did. For sixty years, the box sat in the hall, watching the joys of the two's life. The ups and downs, the in and outs. The happiness, the love, the sorrow. They never felt the time right to open it. But now they knew. Their time had nearly come, and they were to open the box. The man carefully picked up the thing, and placed it on his lap. He held his wife's hand.
'Ready?'
