Title: Tomboy

by Marzena from London | in writing, fiction

(Scene shows Sam - a 15 year old girl, staring at something in the shop)

Sam (Samantha)
The slim black dress was staring at me. Its beautiful glittering sequins were perfectly sewn on. I could just imagine myself wearing it, but no. Then the beautiful image with me in the most perfect dress in the world just dissolved. I was mad! I was a tomboy.
Even so, I longed to wear a beautiful long, slim dress, just like the one in front of me. I stared at it longingly thinking about it, then something just flashed, and I realised that I would never wear anything like that, as I was a totally different character to whom the dress was waiting for. What was wrong with me? It was as if one part of my brain was against the other!

Peter
I bought the CD's you wanted, hey Sam, what you staring at'is that a dress you're looking at?
Are you ok? Seriously Sam, that's unlike you.

Sam
Huh?
Yeah, I'm er fine (in a dazed voice)
Man, couldn't he just leave me alone! You can never always tell friends what you think, you know a crowd thing, don't wanna get bullied by the crowd, then be like the crowd. Except deep down, I wanted to wear dresses and buy pretty things, problem is I'm way too tall and it wouldn't seem right and I'd have to hang out with cheerleaders, I'll just stick to being a tomboy.

Peter
Sam (saying worriedly) look, I can tell something's wrong with yer, you're not like yaself!

A girl with black hair comes.

Vicky
Hey Sam, Peter, wats up guys, not common to see ya guys round here.

Sam
My bro's birthday.

Vicky
Oh. Ya know I saw Lucy 'glamour girl' today, she was buying a lousy black dress to go with her boyfriend to the prom. You know how her boyfriend is like 2 years older than her.

Peter
Yeah. We know, anyway I better get going (hand over CD's) I've got detention.

Sam
Bye. Yeah I've got comic club, I know 'lousy', Vicky, seriously though it's not that bad. You guys should try it.

Vicky
O.k maybe if we feel like taking drugs, we might try, and I'll make one with a dress. (laughs)

Sam
Guess I won't be able to wear the dress. Ever.

I am a tomboy myself, because I am tall. I'd love to wear dresses and so on, but it doesn't fit my looks. Life's hard in the real world.
