Title: Play: It doesn't matter

by Lucy from Cambridgeshire | in writing, fiction

Play:It doesn't matter

(Scene opens with a group of girls walking out of school. A plump, foreign looking girl can be seen strolling slowly out of school. She is behind, but in earshot of, the group of girls. Camera focuses on one particular girl in the group.)

Main girl 1: Have you seen that knew freak of a girl?

Another girl: Oh yeah, she's the worst looking person I've ever met. Those big beefy arms just look awful.

Main girl 1: And she's foreign; why doesn't she just go back to her own country? She doesn't belong here.

Another girl: I know this is like nothing to do with it but is your dad still being out of order to you?

Main girl 1: (looks to the floor)

(Camera follows her head). Well yeah, but it's not too bad, I can cope. Anyway, I found out the new freak walks down the road I get picked up on the way home.

Another girl: You're kidding me? Seriously, you'd better keep your distance from that beast of a woman.

(Other girls laugh)

(Camera dissolves into street. Main girl 1 and main girl 2 are walking home. Main girl 1 is quite a way ahead)

(Main girl 1 reaches a car and gets in. A man, understood to be her dad, is sitting in the driving seat looking vicious.)

(Main girl 2 looks in and main girl 1 gestures to her as if to stop her from staring. Main girl 2 looks away and walks on. Car zooms off into distance)

(Camera fades out)

(Camera fades back in onto street where the two girls are walking home again.)

(Main girl 1 reaches the car again but this time the dad gets out and, at this point, it is unclear what he is doing. The camera is from main girl 2's perspective who is quite a bit behind)

A scream can be heard and main girl 2 begins to quicken her pace. As she comes closer to the car the dad can be seen hitting main girl 1. First, main girl 2 walks past but then she sees main girl 1 looking round desperately and she suddenly runs back.

Main girl 2 (to the dad): Get off her you cannot do this.

(Main girl 2 pushes the dad away, slips her hand into main girl 1's hand and they begin to run away. Camera watches them slowly disappear into the distance then jumps to them sitting on the pavement out of breath.)

Main girl 1: I'm so sorry about '

Main girl 2: No, it's fine, you couldn't help it; you were having a bad time yourself; it doesn't matter.

Main girl 1: You know what I said? I '

Main girl 2: Just forget it.

(Camera fades out and fades back in onto school playground where people are coming in at the beginning of the day.)

Main girl 1: So is it ok if I stay for a few weeks?

Main girl 2: Yes, of course, for as long as you need.

Main girl 1: You know what, you showed me something so important last night.

Main girl 2: Go on, what?

Main girl 1: You showed me that it really doesn't matter who you are, where you come from, or what you look like. What really matters is that we are in this life together, we are all part of the same world and, in times of need, we should always be there for each other.

(Camera fades out)
