Title: Questions

by Amy | in writing, fiction

Scene One: A busy shopping centre

[People flood the wide, open hall, pushing and bustling around. We can see and hear talking, shouting and moving. In the middle of all this, a girl is standing almost totally still ' only her head moves as she looks around her. The camera circles her head from above, so that we can see everyone around her while focusing on her, before resting for a few seconds on her face. She looks directly at the camera. After this, she speaks.]

GIRL: Why, even when surrounded by so many people, do I feel so alone?

[She looks down and off to the side. The scene ends.]

Scene Two: A classroom

[The classroom is noisy with idle chatter and laughter. There are a couple of boys (boys number one and two) sitting on tables throwing paper balls around the room, mostly at girls, who are just chatting or doing make-up. The girls look around and give the boys an annoyed look. On the front row is a girl sitting quietly on her own, writing in an exercise book. After showing the rest of the room, the camera focuses on her. A paper ball hits her on the back of the room and we hear laughs from the boys. She stops for writing for a second or so but doesn't look around. Then a couple of seconds pass.]

BOY 1: Hey! Nerd!

BOY 2: Geek!

[The girl tries not to look around but ends up glancing over. The boys are staring at her with huge grins on their faces. She looks back down and tries to continue working until another paper ball hits her. She stops and looks at the camera.]

GIRLS (MAIN): Everywhere, always, I get called geek or nerd or teacher's pet. What's so wrong with wanting to do well?

[She looks away. The scene ends.]

Scene Three: A girl's bedroom

[Three well-made up girls are hanging around in the room. One is standing up holding a long, expensive-looking dress, chatting to a second about it in the background, while the other is doing her make-up in the mirror. The camera starts high and then zooms in just behind her, so that off to one side is the back of her head and then next to it, taking up most of the shot, her reflection in the mirror. She has a straight faced expression, and after a few seconds of the camera's stopping, she sighs. She fiddles with her long hair held back in a high pony-tail for a few seconds before she slumps back in her chair. She turns around to look directly at the camera. ]

GIRL: Why do I have to look so perfect? What was wrong with just me?

[She looks down, away from the camera. The scene ends.]

Scene Four: A school playground

[A boy stands alone at the edge of a busy playground, watching his schoolmates. Some younger children run past him, yelling with glee, while a group of older teenagers wearing hoodies, baseball caps and gold chains around their necks stand just off to the right. The camera begins further out and zooms in slowly on the boy. He fiddles with a small cross around his neck. One of the teenagers notices him, points and sniggers. ]

TEENAGER: Hey! Jesus freak! Why don't you go back to church and sing some hymns?

[The boy turns to see the group laughing and staring at him. He turns and walks away. The group turn away and resume talking. The boy stops after about thirty seconds and leans against a wall. He looks at the camera.]

BOY (MAIN): I don't understand what's so wrong with having faith. Why can't I believe in something that makes my life bearable?

[He looks away. The scene ends.]

Scene Five: An empty room

[The room begins empty except for four simple chairs. The four MAIN young people walk in one by one, in order of original appearance and sit down on a chair. They watch each other enter and give a small smile. When they are all in, they look up at the camera one by one in no particular order. A few seconds pass after they have all looked up.]

ALL: Why do we all have so many questions?

The script focuses four teenagers' / young adults' situations, and all the questions they have. It gives a snapshot of all four, giving us insight into a little of their situation while leaving the audience to think. The idea just came to me when I was reading the outline of the rules and ideas of the competition and I thought it would work and would be unusual so here it is.
