INT. JAMIE'S ROOM - DAY

JAMIE, a student, 16 and stressed, watches a news program while eating a chocolate bar. Working on some paper with one hand.

JAMIE (V.O.)
Jus' wanna go out, I'll leave it for later. Talk 'bout hard life....and these exams really put the pressure on.

Jamie grabs his jacket from next to him. ~ Puts the left earphone of his mp3 player in as he stands. ~ DAVE, an angel, appears on his right.

DAVE
Shouldn't put your work off like that. I know that's not like you.

Before Jamie has the chance to realize the moment, SARAH, a devil, also sporting large wings, and a trident. Wearing a tracksuit and a cap along with gold jewellery. Appears on his left.

SARAH
Don't listen to him, he's so unoriginal, I'm right he's wrong, don't do the work, what difference will a few hours make!

Jamie, believing he's hearing things continues to walk out. Putting his mobile phone and wallet into his jacket pocket.

DAVE
You don't do it now, you'll never get it done, ignore her, think about the rewards at the end of the journey. Truly it's worth it.

Jamie, listening to Dave returns back to his homework, and turns the T.V. off.

JAMIE
You're right, got this chance... gotta take it.

Thinking to himself, Jamie quickly puts his pen to paper.

JAMIE (V.O.)
...now...what does it mean to be young in the UK today...

Jamie, a 16 year old student is working in front of his TV when he decides to give up on his work and head out. As he attempts this he is then made to listen to his own conscience, the good side, and the bad side, ultimately creating his final decision in where he wants to go in life. My inspiration for this was as I myself am a student know personally what all ages ranging from 13 to 19 feel like when at school/college, be it pressured or stressed etc. In terms of exams students feel they're picked on through the media such as the outside view that exams and subjects are now easier, even though there are still many students who struggle with various subjects. The screenplay in a sentence is meant to entail how young people in the UK work hard for deferred gratification, even with all the pressures. There are also extra elements of being young in the UK such as the combination of mp3 players and mobile phones with teenagers. This is a huge feature of contemporary young lifestyles in the UK. The angel is aimed to represent families and teachers who look after and support young people through life and education. Where as the devil is purely the alter-ego of the majority of teenagers in the UK today. The relevant narrative which relates to the competition itself was inspired through teenagers thoughts in contemporary society, and giving them a voice, as if to say Jamie was also entering this competition and sharing his opinions on young people in the UK too.
