Title: Classmates

Characters: (In order of appearance)

Joe: Age 14. Only child. Lives with and cares for his disabled father.

Joe's Dad

Andy Age 14 . Lives with his mother, stepfather and three step-sisters. Keen athlete. Not so good at maths.

Andy's Mum

Grace, Age 13. Lives with her Jamaican parents and her sister Molly.
Her father is a taxi driver and her mother a cleaner. Hardworking, conscientious gifted student.

Grace's Dad

Gemma, Age 13. Lives with her parents and younger brother. Persists in school although she struggles. Very sociable. Good friends with Joe.

Jerry: 13 years old. Newly arrived in England from Thailand. His mother is Thai and his father is an English banker. He has three brothers.
Sam 11 years old
Jonathan 9 years old
Marcus 4 years old

Mr Lemmon: 25-30 years old. Athletic PE Teacher.

Miss Wright: 50-55 years old. Long grey hair. Shrieking voice. Maths Teacher

Two Paramedics

SCENE 1: AWAKENINGS

[Joe's bedroom. The alarm sounds at 6am. He leaps out of bed. Dresses hurriedly and runs downstairs. Makes breakfast for Dad and himself. Dad is in a wheelchair.}
Cut to:
[Andy's bedroom]

ANDY'S MUM: (Aggressively) Andy, Andy, Get up'.NOW!

[Andy gets up grudgingly, sighs as he walks downstairs. His Mum keeps trying to speak to him but he ignores her and makes breakfast in silence.]

Cut to:
[Grace's bedroom. She sits up, rubs her eyes, gets up, walks downstairs and eats breakfast whilst packing schoolbag . Sits down and reads a book.]

GRACE'S DAD: Would you like a lift Honey?
GRACE: Yes please.

Cut to:
[Gemma's bedroom. She leaps out of bed and rushes downstairs, stuffs down her breakfast whilst packing her bag. Heads out of the door]

GEMMA: Bye, see ya later.

Cut To:

[Jerry's bedroom. He gets out of bed, lazily walks downstairs. Straight onto the computer where breakfast is waiting for him. His siblings are shouting all around him but he ignores them.

SCENE 2: THE SCHOOL GATE

[Mr. Lemmon is on duty at the gate. Gemma arrives first by bicycle. Next, Grace by car. Joe steps off the bus. Then Andy and Jerry walk in together. Mr. Lemmon taps his watch to indicate that they are late]

SCENE 3: GYMNASIUM

[Mr. Lemmon oversees a running test. Andy and Gemma do very well, finish and sit down first. Grace keeps going steadily and gets there soon after. Eventually Jerry and Joe finish and collapse onto the floor. Mr. Lemmon tuts. He writes on his clipboard]

MR LEMMON: Well Done, you all got there in the end. Class dismissed.

SCENE 4: MATHS LESSON

[Miss Wright is writing equations on the board. Grace is concentrating hard as is Jerry and Gemma. Joe is almost asleep at this desk. Andy is distracted and throws a paper aeroplane at Miss Wright. Joe looks at the clock, bell rings, he runs into the corridor and checks his Dad by telephoning him]

JOE: [Into telephone] How are you? Do you need me?

[there is mumbling from the other end of the telephone].

JOE: OK, see you later. [puts the mobile phone in his pocket]

SCENE 5: AFTER SCHOOL

[Joe arrives home, puts on the kettle and prepares dinner]

CUT TO:

[Andy is in the Gymnasium shouting at his Mother on his mobile telephone]

ANDY: I won't be back for an hour. No.. No. An hour.

[He turns off the telephone even though his Mum is still speaking. Puts it in his pocket and walks away]

CUT TO:
[Grace is at home sitting in her room doing her homework. She gets a telephone call on her mobile phone from Gemma]

GRACE: No, Gemma I can't talk now. I'm doing my homework. Stop calling me (she giggles)

CUT TO:

[Gemma giggling on the telephone]

CUT TO:
[Jerry who is playing loud computer games on his laptop]

SCENE 6: THE ENDING

[All five pupils can be seen at once. Grace is reading in bed. Andy is listening to CD player in bed. Gemma is asleep. Jerry is still on the computer and Joe is seen accompanying his father who is being taken into hospital by paramedics after a fall]
