Title: Fries?

by Peter from London | in writing, fiction

(A young man walks in to a classic chip shop, with lino floors; the food displayed on backlit plastic boards above the counter; which is incidentally glass fronted, loaded with fast food and has an older man behind it)

Older man: Ah Ben, there you are. So what's it gonna be, the usual cod and chips with your extra mushy peas?

Ben: No thanks Dave, I think I'll go for a change this week. Haddock with fries please.

Dave(taken aback sounding): Fries?

Ben: What's wrong with fries?

Dave(slightly disappointedly): Well it's just the words chips aint it.

Ben(in an irritated fashion): What's the difference.

Dave (more confidently): Well chips is chips, and fries is (pause) well that's the thing fries isn't. Fries is just made up by you kids.

Ben (very irritated): But fries are literally the same thing as chips just a different word.

Dave (suddenly peaceful): Are they really?

Ben(physically angry): I'm leaving, goodbye.

Dave: You want fries with that?
