Title: Boring old Britain

by Charlie from Surrey | in writing, fiction

A very, very old man creeps out of the left wing. In centre stage there is a young boy, a bit of a goth/modern

The old man hobbles over to the young boy, this takes time and creates tension. The boy suddenly becomes aware of the man and leaps up.

Old Man ' Why are you so melancholy, child?

Young Boy ' Oh, just stuff

Old Man ' Tell.

The old man sits down slowly on a box that is propped next to where the boy was sitting. The young boy hesitates for a while but then proceeds to sit next to the man.

Young Boy ' I just feel as though England is a bit boring

Old Man (beginning to look concerned) ' Go on

Young Boy - I mean, India has dancing and festival history, Australia has Aborigines and New Zealand has Maori history, I just find England a bit boring you know with all the posh stuff and blah, blah, blah'.

Old Man ' Oh, now, now, England is special too, believe me, I've lived through it all.

A curtain falls on the stage and then is pulled up almost instantly for the next scene. The young boy and the man are squatting behind a wall watching the scene in front of them. Two jousters are performing to a small crowd. Every face is smiling and cheering, beverages to hand, traditional English setting. The jousting tournament finishes and the fighters shake hands.

The old man looks at the boy smiling.

Old Man (he leans over) ' I am the one in the blue (he points to a young man standing in the crowd, cheering happily).

A curtain falls again and then is pulled up to reveal a different scene, the wall is still there. A Shakespearean actor is reeling off the last lines of a play. The crowd about him cheer and scream.

Old Man ' I'm the one in the blue (he points to the young man standing in the crowd).

The curtain falls and reopens once more to reveal a beautiful May Day scene. Some children are skipping round a may pole chuckling happily.

Old Man ' Can you guess who I am?

Young Boy ' The one in the blue? (the old man winks)

The curtain falls again on the happy English scene and the Old Man turns to the boy. The boy is looking happier.

Old Man ' One last time (he beckons the boy over behind the wall)

The curtain falls and reopens on a modern pub scene. A football match is showing on television. There is a happy crowd cheering, from the back, the pub owner and the bar ladies are leaning over cheering, the people eating are smiling and the rowdy lot at the front are just having fun. The pub is typically English with monarchy pictures on the wall.

Young Boy ' Do you mind if I join them?

The old man shakes his head knowingly and then disappears off the left wing. The young boy climbs over the wall slowly and is instantly welcomed into the pub with joyous laughter.
