The Dark Renaissance

My inspiration came from the renaissance collection in the V & A archives.
I used images of a piece of stained glass and Tabernacle as the two major points of sourcing my inspiration. I believe that by focusing on these, it won’t over power and over complicate the designs, thus leaving me with a clear direction and colour palette.
My designs are based on structure which came from isolating key shapes in the images and using them to create silhouettes by enlarging, layering and rotating. Hence the top roof part of the Tabernacle became a structured sleeve, an elegant cape and a lavish tiered skirt.
The shape of the stained glass contributed to the design of the seam lines on the bodice area of the dress. By adding gold finishes such as the piping these shapes are emphasised and draws the eye.
My colour palette has been kept simple but dramatic for maximum impact. Black is used in contrast to a beautiful gilded gold colour and off-set by touches of blood red. The lattice pattern from the stained glass has been using in various places as a beaded embellishment.
Overall, I believe the collection speaks volumes; however the main words I will use to describe it is lavish, chic, and just the right amount of couture.
