Derry band Wyldling

With a new video for their track 'Siren' having just hit the interwebs, we thought it would be perfect timing to catch up with Derry four-piece electro-rock outfit Wylding to discover all kinds of factoids about the band in this week's edition of The Making Of:听

(Glenn Rosborough)听The first record i bought was听Lenny Kravitz'Greatest Hits'.

(David Kirby) The last record I bought听was 'Epicloud' by the . The guy's a genius!

(Phil Curran)听The one gig that made me want to be in a band听was听Such As听in the Nucleus.

(Jilly St John) One musician that inspired me to start performing?听Gawd there have been so many over the years, bearing in mind I witnessed the 80's. I love watching live shows in general especially Prince, Queen, Black Sabbath, Nirvana to name a couple, but I have to say I've always been drawn to strong female figures from a young age. Artists like Kate Bush, Patti Smith, Blondie, Madonna, and in my late teens No Doubt, Juliette Lewis. My list is endless. Performance has always just been there since I could walk and string a sentence together.听

Bantum Legion album cover

This week鈥檚 That New Band Smell features some ridiculously talented new acts - the kind of bands that make you want to get up off your behind and start a record label just so you can share them with the world. I鈥檓 and here are some of songs that鈥檝e been on repeat in my stereo this month, I hope you鈥檒l enjoy them as much as I do.

First up are the September Girls who describe themselves as sounds from a transistor radio abandoned in an old cinema. They鈥檙e unique in the fact that they鈥檙e an all female band with an awesome drummer on board called Sarah Grimes. Two of the members, Paula and Caoimhe, used to be in the and then , so they鈥檝e been making music together for a few years. They recently released 'Green Eyed' (below) on 7鈥 via Soft Power Records who are based in Glasgow and they鈥檝e just joined DIY label Matinee Recordings in the States. Their stuff kind of reminds me of the and they鈥檙e currently working on their debut album and that will be available sometime next year.

Savour Your Scene Fest

Northern Irish independent metal/hardcore label, are having their first ever mini fest this Saturday at the Warzone Collective, Belfast.

Being a one stop shop for "punk & crust fans, hardcore kids, those into their thrash and metal and those simply wanting to indulge in some loud music", it was a simple choice for this week's 'Gig of the Week'.

We spoke to Savour Your Scene founder and drummer,Stephen Currie about the day festival this Saturday:

**

"I wanted to not only highlight the talent Belfast currently has, but also bring bands from the south giving them exposure in this growing Belfast scene.听We've 7 bands on the bill (4 from the North, 3 from the South)."

"Picking the bill was pretty easy, most of the bands are on the label and we have worked closely to help release their music.听听are making an appearance as personally I'm just a straight up huge fan, and听听I chose as I like to give new bands an opportunity to network and get gig contacts to get them off the ground and outside of their comfort zone. Basically since forming the label I've always wanted to get all the bands on the one bill, sadly By Any Means can't join us for this one... maybe next time!"

"Also Saturday's a celebration! Paul () is having his stagg at it, so congratulation to him and his lovely wife to be, and it's a leaving party, as Ryan () is playing is last show with the band to pursue his personal projects. All in all, it's going to be mental craic!"

**
Gacy Threads, Ilenkus, Lantern for a Gale, Three Hour Ceasefire, Hornets, Milestones and Pigs As People all play the Savour Your Scene Fest #1 at the Warzone Collective, Belfast this Saturday the 24th of November.

John Corabi - Auntie Annie's, Belfast

John Corabi (Unplugged)
Auntie Annie鈥檚, Belfast
Saturday, November 17th

Having played with or fronted the likes of Union, The Scream and Motley Crue 鈥 the latter on their genuinely impressive 1994 self-titled album 鈥 Pennsylvanian fifty-something remains one of the most well travelled and well-versed hard rock performers in the business. With a CV with very few comparisons in the genre, tonight he brings his wide-ranging back catalogue and powerful voice to Belfast, stripped back and bare-boned.

Despite expressing disappointment at the poor turn-out at his two previous Irish dates on the current tour, Corabi has drawn a hefty crowd tonight 鈥 an eclectic melange of youth and experience; the curious and the heartily inducted. Kicking off with a swift one-two of Union tracks propped up on a stool 鈥 including single 鈥楲ove (I Don鈥檛 Need It Anymore)鈥 鈥 he is clearly on fine form; interspersing anecdotes and musings with vigorous yet minimalist renderings of songs faithfully echoed by tonight鈥檚 ever-growing audience.

This evening is the first of a run of album launches for The Bonnevilles. Having just released their second studio album, 鈥淔olk Art & The Death of Electric Jesus鈥, the duo are travelling across the province to introduce new ears to their retro inspired fusion of blues and punk.听

But first, they don鈥檛 come more classic rock鈥檔鈥檙oll than the Troublesome Bucks. The songs are pretty much standard fare with no frills attached, but this allows the skill of the musicians to stand out. These guys like a good guitar solo and aren鈥檛 afraid of a middle eight either. Fans of Rory Gallager won鈥檛 be disappointed by their sound, which is clearly influenced by his music. 鈥淢idnight Train鈥 is the highlight of a tight set, showcasing a band of accomplished performers.

open with the dark, slighty eccentric chant of 鈥淗igh Rise鈥 over the thrum of a six string bass. It鈥檚 a mixed bag; bright bouncy pop-worthy numbers, such as 鈥淰enus鈥, contrast with almost tribal driven beats. Thankfully the vocals of unlikely frontman Paul Connolly prevent it from getting a bit too bipolar. Don鈥檛 be fooled by his slight stature; jittering on his tiptoes, Connolly鈥檚 voice commands attention and stands out with an ethereal, quivering quality. There鈥檚 a moment when his guitar string breaks and he almost sends his mic stand careening offstage, but he battles on with the same momentum, unphased. 鈥淕oose鈥 stands out for its splendid three part harmonies, whilst closing track 鈥淭houghts of You鈥 defines the stomping and impatient theme that runs through most of their music.

Having signed to the ever-helpful Smalltown America, has finally been able to unleash his debut album. We say his, as OKS is essentially a vehicle for Chris McConaghy, former guitarist with Derry garage-pop loons Red Organ Serpent Sound. But far from wasting time licking his wounds after the bands deal with Mercury didn't lead to the type of success that seemed inevitable back in 2004, Chris is making the type of music he loves, on his own terms. Any listeners reap the rewards. But which bands and artistes can claim responsibility for the type of music Chris finds himself making? Lets discuss The Making Of....Our Krypton Son

The first record I ever bought was, embarassingly,听'America's Least Wanted'听by听. I bought it on cassette in 'Soundsaround' that used to be in Derry. Nightmare. I was only 12 or so though.听

Earlier though, we had . Armed just with her acoustic guitar and a few rambling tales, she's a great scene setter, utterly captivating, full of intrigue. The curiosity that comes with such a talanted 16 year old soon dispels however - these songs are pretty universal after all, full of wisdom for one so young. 'Sea Creatures' remains the stand out and, given the masses penchant for a stripped down ballad, surely a future hit. Soak tells us there's Radio 1 daytime plays to look forward to this week and everyone cheers, knowing she's really on to something.

For the 50 people fortunate enough to get a ticket, this evening鈥檚 showcase in Botanic Garden鈥檚 Palm House promises to be the most bespoke gig in Belfast Music Week鈥檚 programme. We鈥檙e met at the garden gates and ushered along a dark path to the Palm House鈥檚 rear entrance. In the main atrium several rows of seats have been set out and a small performance space cleared. Built like a cathedral of intricate glass and metal work, filled with exotic plants and illuminated by Victorian lampposts, it feels more like we鈥檝e have strayed into Narnia than a public park.

Huddled in hats and scarfs the audience do their best to dodge the drops of condensation falling from the ceiling. The lights drop with a jolt and Stuart Bailie introduces us to the 鈥榤addest venue鈥 of the week.

First up is Tony Wright鈥檚 . 鈥淚鈥檝e always wanted to play here in Jurassic Park鈥 he says. With tonight鈥檚 crowd coming together around 9pm, the 02 stage is thrown into darkness before White鈥檚 six-piece backing band 鈥 the all-female Peacocks 鈥 surface to practically idolatrous applause. Grabbing his electric guitar with self-contained intent, White tears straight into recent single, the feral 鈥楽ixteen Saltines鈥. The crowd response, already totally besotted, verges on euphoric when White Stripes鈥 classic fuzz-rocker 鈥楧ead Leaves and the Dirty Ground鈥 emerges from the former鈥檚 outro. Despite only a minority of the crowd having bothered to don attire for the occasion, there鈥檚 already a celebratory mood in the air.

I still love that Garagey tom tom beat thing. A lot of Bonnevilles songs have a similar thing going on!
