Historian, education pioneer and prolific broadcaster Lord Asa Briggs has died at the age of 94.

He wrote a history of broadcasting which is considered to be the unofficial history of the ��.

Lord Briggs made many appearances on television and radio, the first being in 1945 for Mills of Satan, a history of the first factories in Britain.

He is credited in the Genome listings on 177 occasions, the most recent being in 2008 when he contributed to a programme marking the 30th anniversary of microphones being allowed into the House of Commons for the first time.

Lord Briggs' wife, Lady Susan, said "there has been a real outpouring of love and admiration for him".
