Does anyone really care? I wish them well, but I guess we are now going to be treated to an orgy of speculation up to the date of the wedding itself. Let's face it, they are not goign have to worry about income or where to buy a house. I've got couples who are cancelling their wedding ceremonies because that cannot afford a property, or the wedding that they would like to have, due to recession. And please drop that banner headline off the website - I'm sure there are more important things to report in the world today.

Just as Ted Heath organised the marriage of Princess Anne in 1973 to take minds off the 3 day week, Thatcher organised the marriage of Charles and Di when she was deeply unpopular, this is Cameron's master stroke to make the masses feel happy as they make unpopular decisions.

Conspiracy theorists, did I get that about right? I would argue these are all Tory conspiracies but then the Queen herself got married in the darkest days of Labour's post war austerity.

My reaction. So what!!! A young couple have decided to marry just like thousands of others in the UK every year. I wish them luck. They'll need it.

And as to 'what will this cost the taxpayer'... the answer is very little if anything at all. Charles and his sons are supported by revenue from the Duchy of Cornwall, not the civil list. Even if the taxpayer DID pick up the bill it would be a fraction of the cost of the Popes visit and unlike the pope William will eventually be a head of state!

I just hope it was not a move orchestrated by the Coalition government to counter balance the doom and gloom about the economy and the anger faced by ten of thousands of people that lost their jobs. The thing that will cheer me up more is for ordinary British families to be able to pay their mortgages and to have a secure employment in this time of uncertainty. This story certainly seems to have brought the anti monarchists out of the wood work.

The monarchy is part of the unique British culture and heritage.

As for the cost of this institution to the public purse - I think that the earnings that this country via the tourist trade far exceeds to total cost to the tax payer and that is without the work that the monarchy carry out.

Its been on the news channel non stop since it was announced I'm already sick of hearing about it. the bbc have dragged anyone or even passed her on the street when she was a small child to give an insight into her. Leave the young woman alone. I hope they are very happy but the media will not let that happen will they.

To all those who complain about the cost:

The monarchy aren't spongers off of the tax payer, they contribute a valuable quantity to the economy and pay tax themselves. Yes, they have an extensive running cost but the income they provide to the public purse well outweighs this. More than 2.9 million people visit the royal properties each year as paying tourists, they do this because of the royal family and without them being an active part of our lives this number would be reduced greatly. If you just look at their expenditure then you are completely ignoring both the direct and indirect income, so Republicanism as a business argument it has no founding.

In addition the monarch has a duty to us, the people and she serves the country for her entire life (even if it is in relative luxury). I don't understand why anyone would want to be a Republic when there are actual cash benefits from remaining a Constitutional Monarchy. Perhaps these people believe the treasures should be sold off to pay for the short term failures of politicians and society? That would be a real achievement, selling off over a thousands years of accumulated history to the highest bidder and not having them be continuously maintained for the nation. All of the Palaces are used by the public to some extent and they are used for the national good far more than for personal benefit.

Most Republicans that I have seen argue on the basis of the fact that they feel they should be entitled to something for nothing not really on the basis that they feel there is no contribution from the Monarchy. Jealousy is no reason to dismiss over a thousand years of history.

Oh, and if you don't appreciate how much of a tourist draw the wedding will be then you clearly have never been to Trooping the Colour or even the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace! The tourists flock to these events and the royal family are a key part of the British tourist economy!

拢37 million a year when we have a benefit bill of 拢160bn? Works out at about 40p each.

In any case Charles and sons are paid for by his Dad's farms not the taxpayer (Charles pays 40% tax on his income so is a MUCH bigger taxpayer than you are). If you don't want to fund William (and I note he doesn't get the option whether or not to rescue you in his 40 year old helicopter) don't buy 'Duchy Original' sausages.

Stand by for huge amounts of pro-royal propaganda. I hope that, during the whole process, the public are aquainted with the actual costs of the occasion including, all security costs.
