Royal wedding: Your reaction

11:16 UK time, Tuesday, 16 November 2010

Prince William is to marry his long term girlfriend Kate Middleton next year. What message would you send to the couple?

William, second in line to the throne, will marry Kate in London next spring or summer and the couple will live in north Wales, where he is serving with the RAF.

Prince William has given his fiancee Kate Middleton his mother's engagement ring.

What is your reaction to news of the royal engagement? What message would you send to the couple? Are you getting married next year? What tips would you offer the couple?

There are more important issues to be debated than a royal wedding.

Like the coalition's destruction of the UK's employment market and welfare state.

  • Comment number 2.

Oh goody rejoice the World is saved.
Hope they have a nice wedding,no doubt we will be picking up the tab!
Any chance of a day off?

    'Royal wedding: Your reaction'

    Woop Woop.

    Who's paying.

    Brides father is it?

Oh no, thats right its us. Paying a large chunk of the wedding of two millionaires.

If we had a choice I'd tell them to kiss my republican donkey.

  • Comment number 4.

My main concern is whether this will cost the taxpayer anything. Otherwise it is of no interest to me at all.

  • Comment number 5.

Good Luck and wish them all the best

  • Comment number 6.

Congratulations to the happy couple. I hope that they will be both very happy and enjoy a long and happy marriage.

  • Comment number 7.

Shock horror!!! hold the front page!!! someone is to get married....
Who cares... not me for one. It's a non story.

  • Comment number 8.

Great I wonder what they would like for a present?

  • Comment number 9.

People actually think that this is news?

What pathetically deferential, sad, servile serfs they are.

Isn't it time we dumped this backward, archaic farce into the dustbin of history where it truly belongs and became a republic like every liberal democracy in the modern world?

  • Comment number 10.

Unlike his father, Prince William has been able to make his own choice. He appears to be a hard working, caring young man who is an asset to the Monarchy. Congratulations, William and Kate, be happy.

  • Comment number 11.

    Good for them :D

  • Comment number 12.

I cannot belive that when I select world news this rubbish comes up.

People are at war, starving and dying all over the world and the 主播大秀 put this on the front page.

Why would we want to know about a wedding that we will all have to pay for and for two people who live on a different planet to rest of us.

    totally disgusting, what a joke!!!

  • Comment number 13.

Congratulations to HRH and his fiance!

Ah! well back to the grind...

  • Comment number 20.

Cor blimey: Royal wedding announced and 主播大秀 News goes into snivvelling toady overdrive. I expect there will be endless repetition of the same stock footage of these folk on royal walkabout with comments from a small selection of feckless pundits. Aw: how sweet. Hopefully they won't be needing legal aid in 15 years when they "agree to separate"

I actually heard somebody praising Kate whats-her-name because she "comes from humble stock". So pleased to see we're still living in Tudor Engerland. . .

  • Comment number 21.

Good news, I wish the Prince and his bride the best of luck

  • Comment number 22.

Great - yet more expense for the taxpayer!

Does anyone spot a pattern here? 1981 - country in recession and on its knees; let's have a royal wedding to take everyone's minds off it!!

2010 - country in recession and on its knees....only it won't work this time because the vast majority of the public no longer have the affection for the royal family that they once did. More and more they are seen as an expensive irrelevance...

  • Comment number 24.

Does anyone really care? I wish them well, but I guess we are now going to be treated to an orgy of speculation up to the date of the wedding itself. Let's face it, they are not goign have to worry about income or where to buy a house. I've got couples who are cancelling their wedding ceremonies because that cannot afford a property, or the wedding that they would like to have, due to recession. And please drop that banner headline off the website - I'm sure there are more important things to report in the world today.

  • Comment number 25.

I say good luck and much happiness to anyone considering marriage.

However, in this instance, no doubt the Red Tops will do their level best to intrude and destroy any chance this couple will have to enjoy their future together. The Red Tops have an unfortunate record in this respect. Shame on the Red Tops and shame on all who read this trash.

  • Comment number 26.

I just hope that she's not going to aspire to be like his mother! One Diana was enough, thank you, we do not need another! I wish them well, but hope that this one will try and divert the media attention. The only downside is, now all the die-hard Diana fanatics will re-surface again! YAWN!

  • Comment number 27.

    good for him

  • Comment number 28.

    WHO CARES

  • Comment number 29.

OK there's going to be a royal wedding, but it looks like the 主播大秀 News website is going to explode. Why suddenly increase the size of the text? Why not WRITE IT ALL IN CAPS AND REALLY SHOUT ABOUT IT?

  • Comment number 30.

I wondered if this was about to be announced. I am glad that they have found each other and I hope the press has the decency to allow them to adjust. Don't do a Diana or a Fergie to them please.

  • Comment number 31.

The last thing the general public needs right now is more toffs flaunting their obscene wealth.

  • Comment number 32.

I wish them luck, but I have as much interest in their PERSONAL life as I do that of a random couple in Skegness - zero. No doubt this news agency and others will, however, spend a lot of time, money and effort going over the details with a fine-tooth-comb in the name of "public interest".

  • Comment number 33.

Congratulations to Prince William and Kate, hope all goes well with wedding preparations. Best wishes

  • Comment number 34.

I sincerely wish William and Kate many years of marital happiness.

  • Comment number 35.

I really don't care, the royal family are a turist attraction and a way for the media to fill space.

  • Comment number 36.

Please do it at a registry office. We can't afford it.

  • Comment number 37.

I trust that the wedding will be done on the cheap to reflect the current austerity measures? And that security etc will not have to come out of the public purse....we are, after all "ALL in this together". This is of course all in hope rather than expectation. I genuinely find the concept of Royalty disgraceful in these times.

  • Comment number 38.

Oh no. How much is this fiasco going to cost me now?
The royals family is a waste of money and the last thing we need is more of 'em.

  • Comment number 39.

Hurrah, pip-pip, bully beef and spam, mind 'ow ye go, very 'umble, sir, yawn.

  • Comment number 40.

Congratulations to them both. Theres nothing like a royal wedding to raise the nations spirits.

I just hope that the media show Kate a bit more respect than they did Diana. The 主播大秀 should know better than to run articles with headlines "Is Kate the new queen of hearts". Kate is not Diana nor should we expect her to be.

  • Comment number 41.

Absolutely delighted, what a well kept secret, well done William and Kate, (just hope the date of the wedding doesnt clash with either my daughter's or my son's weddings which are also happening next year!)

  • Comment number 42.

    Great, a day off!

  • Comment number 43.

Before anyone else says it, this has been orchestrated by the government to take the minds of the masses off the economic mess. Just as Ted Heath organised the marriage of Princess Anne in 1973 to take minds off the 3 day week, Thatcher organised the marriage of Charles and Di when she was deeply unpopular, this is Cameron's master stroke to make the masses feel happy as they make unpopular decisions.

Conspiracy theorists, did I get that about right? I would argue these are all Tory conspiracies but then the Queen herself got married in the darkest days of Labour's post war austerity.

  • Comment number 44.

Cue the Royal Family bashing... I wish them all the best although I hope that they are getting married for the right reasons and not because they have been pressured into it.

My reaction. So what!!! A young couple have decided to marry just like thousands of others in the UK every year. I wish them luck. They'll need it.

I just hope that the hype surrounding them is significantly less than that which surrounded his mother and fathers nuptials. However, I expect not. We'll have the usual bunch of commentators trying to have us believe in fairy tales.

  • Comment number 47.

I really don't care however I seem to care enough to be able to make this comment...

  • Comment number 48.

Congratulations to both of you. Very well suited, know each other well, and a perfect age.

You'd better not choose the same date as my daughter's wedding next summer. There's no way I'll be able to compete!

  • Comment number 49.

How surprising, not. Nothing like a good wedding - or even better war - to keep the plebs distracted. Well it worked in the 80's so why not again?

But, I would like a bank holiday. If my taxes are going to pay for the wedding, at least give me something in return.

  • Comment number 52.

Good luck to them, I hope the media and the public at large don't put the same intolerable pressures on Kate that they did on Di.

  • Comment number 53.

Unless I'm invited I'm sure it won't affect me.

Is mummy paying for this wedding? No, I thought not.
    Taxpayers money again.
The country is in a mess and the two clowns in Downing Street are making it worse. So I don`t think this announcement will make people feel any better.

  • Comment number 59.

    Congratulations both.

I trust the families will be sharing the wedding costs.

Perhaps OK magazine or Hello will help subsidise the wedding.
If you need a Photographer 'Slick' Dave's got one going spare and I'm sure the man who 'won'???? the election for the Tories' Mr Murdoch would be in for the 'exclusive' rights to cover the wedding.

Gran could even make a 'bob' or twon on this.

After all we're all in this together.

  • Comment number 60.

While I wish the couple all the happiness they could wish for, I don't honestly know why this has anything to do with me. It's about time we abolished the monarchy, because it has no place in 21st century Europe.

  • Comment number 61.

And how much is this going to cost us exactly?

  • Comment number 62.

One thing is for certain, despite all the 鈥淗ow much is it going to cost鈥 comments.

A royal wedding will do much more for the British economy than the current bunch in government

  • Comment number 63.

Oh good grief, look at all these comments by miserables sods.

It is good news, congratulations to them both, I wsih them all the best.
Yes it is front page news, this is our royal family, and our future king (and queen now).

  • Comment number 64.

In my opinion, a 'fairytale wedding' costing the earth (and being paid for by the taxpayer!!) would be obscene when you consider the redundancies and unemployment.

Sorry - the Royals are too costly for the UK to afford!

  • Comment number 65.

Why has the 主播大秀 set up a page for the 'great' British public to pour hate at two people who have really done nothing to offend anyone?

And as to 'what will this cost the taxpayer'... the answer is very little if anything at all. Charles and his sons are supported by revenue from the Duchy of Cornwall, not the civil list. Even if the taxpayer DID pick up the bill it would be a fraction of the cost of the Popes visit and unlike the pope William will eventually be a head of state!

  • Comment number 66.

Congratulations to them! I just hope it was not a move orchestrated by the Coalition government to counter balance the doom and gloom about the economy and the anger faced by ten of thousands of people that lost their jobs. The thing that will cheer me up more is for ordinary British families to be able to pay their mortgages and to have a secure employment in this time of uncertainty. I pray this is not a well timed PR exercise :) However once again may I take this opportunity to congratulate them :)

  • Comment number 67.

If it wasn't for the fact that this will probably cost more in job losses and cuts to public services than already on the cards,I wouldn't otherwise give a stuff.

Can't the happy couple wait a year? Their wedding would make a great opening ceremony for the 2012 Olympics.

  • Comment number 71.

This story certainly seems to have brought the anti monarchists out of the wood work.

The monarchy is part of the unique British culture and heritage.

As for the cost of this institution to the public purse - I think that the earnings that this country via the tourist trade far exceeds to total cost to the tax payer and that is without the work that the monarchy carry out.

  • Comment number 72.

Its been on the news channel non stop since it was announced I'm already sick of hearing about it. the bbc have dragged anyone or even passed her on the street when she was a small child to give an insight into her. Leave the young woman alone. I hope they are very happy but the media will not let that happen will they.

  • Comment number 73.

This is news? It'll all eventually end in tears I'm sure. Wonder who the next `Camilla' is. Looking forward to the demise of the monarchy and this endless diversion from real democratic issues at the expense of human dignity, both `ours' and `theirs'. At least on the X-Factor there is some sort of vote!

  • Comment number 75.

Sick of hearing of it already.

Didn't they mistime the announcement though - they were supposed to announce it before they announced the compensation being paid to the Guantanimo detainees, not after.

  • Comment number 76.

    Oh gawd

Another princess for the press to chase all over europe, then splash 'exclusives' all over their front pages

We all know how the last one to suffer that treatment ended.....

Still , takes the pleb's minds off their looming unemployment and rising taxes

  • Comment number 77.

To all those who complain about the cost:

The monarchy aren't spongers off of the tax payer, they contribute a valuable quantity to the economy and pay tax themselves. Yes, they have an extensive running cost but the income they provide to the public purse well outweighs this. More than 2.9 million people visit the royal properties each year as paying tourists, they do this because of the royal family and without them being an active part of our lives this number would be reduced greatly. If you just look at their expenditure then you are completely ignoring both the direct and indirect income, so Republicanism as a business argument it has no founding.

In addition the monarch has a duty to us, the people and she serves the country for her entire life (even if it is in relative luxury). I don't understand why anyone would want to be a Republic when there are actual cash benefits from remaining a Constitutional Monarchy. Perhaps these people believe the treasures should be sold off to pay for the short term failures of politicians and society? That would be a real achievement, selling off over a thousands years of accumulated history to the highest bidder and not having them be continuously maintained for the nation. All of the Palaces are used by the public to some extent and they are used for the national good far more than for personal benefit.

Most Republicans that I have seen argue on the basis of the fact that they feel they should be entitled to something for nothing not really on the basis that they feel there is no contribution from the Monarchy. Jealousy is no reason to dismiss over a thousand years of history.

Oh, and if you don't appreciate how much of a tourist draw the wedding will be then you clearly have never been to Trooping the Colour or even the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace! The tourists flock to these events and the royal family are a key part of the British tourist economy!

Congratulations to the happy couple. It will brighten up next year and give us something to look forward to. Glamerous bride and handsome bridegroom will mean that this will be the international social occasion of the decade. It will generate millions for the economy and I for one am glad that my tax is paying for something good.

  • Comment number 81.

Well I wish them luck; I鈥檝e been getting this very strange and uncomfortable eighties dejar vu feeling lately, I think I may be stuck I a closed time like curve.

  • Comment number 82.

She must love him loads to want to enter into that ghastly family. Being cynical the timing is a distraction from the more serious events. Only the sycophants will be pleased the rest of us don't care. The Queen should pay for the wedding which in security terms alone will cost a fortune and is not justified during these times of austerity. Rather tactless.

  • Comment number 83.

What message would you send to the couple?

And? people get married every day - nothing special.

  • Comment number 84.

While i`m sure everyone would naturally wish them all the happiness in the world, please 主播大秀 don`t turn into something that resembles certain celebrity magazines. We`ve had some great subject matter in the past where people can debate current affairs, but sadly this isn`t one of them.

  • Comment number 85.

Its typical of the 主播大秀 to highlight the negative comments, still has its left wing bias

  • Comment number 86.

I am not particularly concerned about the Royal Family in my day to day life but I wish the happy couple well and hope they have a happy future together.

  • Comment number 87.

    @ChaosMagick
Which liberal democracy would you so idolise?
The Socialist chaos that is France? The corrupt broken system that is the USA?
I can't find another country who's political system I admire? The UK isn't perfect but dropping the Monarchy isn't going to change anything.

"Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. *Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.*" - George Santayana

The Royal family are our link to the past so that we can move forward.

  • Comment number 88.

Its like an Ebenezer Scrooge competition in here today.

"Royal Wedding? More important things to bemoan and gripe about"

"Bah Humbug! Why should anyone else be happy?"

"My taxes this, my taxes that!"

This should be one of those occasions where if you have nothing remotely pleasant or constructive to say then you should refrain from contributing. You鈥檙e just wasting your time...

Not every forum on the 主播大秀's HYS has to be a sounding board for you to blame everyone and everything else in life for your own inability to be remotely pleased for anyone else and to share your self inflicted discontent with the world and your evident failures.

    Bloody miseries...

  • Comment number 89.

SO--some priviledged toffs are getting hitched, what of it? The days of cow towing to monarchist freeloders is long over. This family hit the self destruct button with it's own immoral and arrogant behaviour in the last 50yrs. How can they be revered or even respected after this--the buble has burst. Jabbajockey

拢37 million a year when we have a benefit bill of 拢160bn? Works out at about 40p each.

In any case Charles and sons are paid for by his Dad's farms not the taxpayer (Charles pays 40% tax on his income so is a MUCH bigger taxpayer than you are). If you don't want to fund William (and I note he doesn't get the option whether or not to rescue you in his 40 year old helicopter) don't buy 'Duchy Original' sausages.

  • Comment number 91.

Stand by for huge amounts of pro-royal propaganda. I hope that, during the whole process, the public are aquainted with the actual costs of the occasion including, all security costs. I dream of a time when the valid views of people like me, who think that this will turn into an obscene waste of public resources, are aired alongside the pro-royal comments. Perhaps this would be a good time to put to the public the true cast of the Royal Household and provide a referendum to assess if the British public really want to continue paying it.

  • Comment number 96.

Congratulations to them both. I have a great respect for William. He works very hard and will make a great King and will need a loving wife to support him.
To those who criticise the 主播大秀s coverage: why shouldn't they have this as thier top story? After all, William and Kate will become the future King and Queen of this country whether you like it or not. That's pretty big news.

Anyo9ne who thinks we would be better off without the Monarchy should perhaps consider moving to a country that has Presidential or Military rule, Zimbabwe or Burma perhaps.
Our Royal family brings tourism and thus money to the country, the present Queen is the best ambassador this country has ever had or probably will have.
Some of the comments are truly shameful not to mention bitter.
Is it really so hard to be pleased for two people who have obviously thought long and hard about the future.
