Huw Stephens Huw Stephens | 10:18 UK time, Thursday, 23 February 2012

Hello, I hope all is good. This week's Label of Love is Gwymon.

A Welsh label named after an album by folk legend Meic Stevens, Guto Brychan runs the label (it's part of Sain, the biggest independent label in Wales) and focuses on up and coming folk artists. Recent releases include albums by Huw M and the Gentle Good, and a stunning new ep by Georgia Ruth Williams.

I spoke to Guto about the label, the releases so far and the plans for the future….

Tip Of The Week: Mikill Pane - I Can Feel It

Post categories:

Lynda Davies Lynda Davies | 10:05 UK time, Monday, 20 February 2012

Mikill Pane is totally obsessed with clever word play, and it's a passion that has served him well as he brings his lyrically inspired hip-hop jams to the playlist.

Hailing from Hackney, Mikill is best known for Little Lady, his massive selling collaboration with Ed Sheeran. He's just finished tours with both Ed and US rapper Mac Miller, and is gearing up to release his debut album, Blame Miss Barclay, later this year.

Championed by Huw and with artists such as Rizzle Kicks, Yasmin and Example knocking on his door, it looks like he won't be short of people to play Scrabble with.

Huw's Label Of Love: Black Butter Records

Post categories:

Huw Stephens Huw Stephens | 10:45 UK time, Thursday, 16 February 2012

Black Butter is a fairly new but established label that deals in all things grime, d'n'b, garage and more. It's a singles label mostly, but an album is on the way from one of the artists on the roster, Rack n Ruin. Olly Wood and Henry Village are in charge and are huge music fans who've worked with different projects over the years but are focusing their attentions on Black Butter for now, with releases from Hostage and Kidnap Kid impressive additions to the label....

3. G.R.E.Ed.S – 'Riot' (Stinkahbell Mix)
Ìý
My third track of the month comes from , a well-known spoken word artist/poet from London. He’s joined forces with to create this unique mix of spoken word and drum and bass. I just thought it was a really cool idea to mix the two, because I know a lot of people think that spoken word/poetry is quite boring, so this was refreshing to hear.

2. Nico Lindsay Feat. Kwam, ObeseÌý& Darkos - 'Is That What He Did'
Ìý
I'll be totally honest with you. Due to whole new wave hype last year, I didn't really take notice of a lot of grime acts. Now that the new wave hype is officially over, I think it’s time to usher in some of grime's underdogs. So, my second track of the month comes from , , Obese and Darkos with 'Is That What He Did'. 2012 grime business!

1. TRACK OF THE MONTH: Teddy Music Feat. Newham Generals - 'Doomed'
Ìý
My number one track of the month comes from and MC outfit, . Both well-known names in the grime scene, Teddy and the Newham Generals – also known as and – all joined forces to create 'Doomed', which is a sinister-sounding grime treat for the ears. This track is the lead track from Teddy's new CD, 'The Grime Compilation', and you can catch the pretty epic video for it everywhere online and on TV.

What a pleasure to talk to the legendary Gilles Peterson about his label, Brownswood Recordings. Gilles is no stranger to running labels of course, founding Talkin' Loud and Acid Jazz back in the day, as well as djing around the world. Releases on Brownswood include the Ghostpoet album that was Mercury nominated, Ben Westbeech and now Gang Colours. Here's Gilles....

Huw's Label Of Love: Impotent Fury

Post categories:

Huw Stephens Huw Stephens | 17:20 UK time, Thursday, 2 February 2012

I caught up with Fred Deakin recently to find out about Impotent Fury. The vinyl junkie is one half of Lemon Jelly and is responsible for the impressive Airside designs also. The recent release by Frank Eddie (including the East 17 Stay Another Day Christmas remix!) made me want to find out more about Impotent Fury, so Fred shed the light....
