Are You Waiting For Me?

Jeff Zycinski | 23:24 UK time, Wednesday, 18 June 2008

Signs of a struggling economy must include the spectacle of taxi drivers assaulting each other. I witnessed such a fracas at Queen Street station in Glasgow a few weeks ago. I had just climbed into the back of a black cab when my driver started shouting and swearing about another cab which had cut in front of him. The other driver got out of his vehicle and my guy did the same. There was some poking and pushing and then a third driver intervened to calm things down.

I was just about to make a hasty exit when my driver got back in front of the wheel and whirled us out into George Square while continuing to vent his spleen. I actually had to give a false destination so that my journey would be over sooner.

Then tonight, outside Pacific Quay, I climbed into a private hire car and was told by the driver that he was being bullied by the black cab drivers on the official rank outside the Ö÷²¥´óÐã building. Apparently they objected to him picking up customers so near to their patch.

Where will it all end? And will there be a boundary charge if we reach Armageddon?
