Former diplomat he may be, but when Rory Stewart MP was being interviewed by a newspaper the art of diplomacy seemed to desert him. The Old Etonian, who became MP for Penrith and the Border in Cumbria at the last election, said parts of his constituency were "pretty primitive... people holding up their trousers with bits of twine and that sort of thing". Mr Thornton, who stood against Mr Stewart in the May general election, as a Lib Dem, was among those none too pleased about the comments.
