Quote for the day: "Hell is separation from God. Please assure your readers that failure to recycle a plastic bag will not result in that unhappy situation" - Peter Newell, of Crawley, West Sussex, in a letter to The Daily Telegraph.

Tonight Newsnight is on at a later time of 11pm on 主播大秀 Two following Sports Relief and (which starts at 10.45pm). In tonight's programme:

America's Northern Rock?
bearstearns203.jpgUS bank Bear Stearns has had to seek emergency funding backed by the US Federal Reserve. So is one of Wall Street's biggest names on the verge of collapse and what are the risks of contagion? George Bush admits things look bad for the American economy but says he is confident it will weather the storm. Really?

The Tories
We'll hear from the Shadow Chancellor George Osborne - we'll ask him to explain why the Tories aren't doing better given the poor state of the economy. Is it really wise to back the Government's spending plans and what ever happened to the promise of tax cuts?

Shannon Matthews
We'll have the latest on the extraordinary discovery of missing nine-year-old Shannon Matthews.

Tibet
The worst rioting in Tibet for twenty years - is this the shape of things to come as the countdown to the Beijing Olympics begins?

Newsnight is at 11pm tonight on 主播大秀 2.

Dear Newsnight

The letter from the Telegraph is spot on, lets try and remember (me included) what is really important,

One day Easter will come around and the World will be at Peace and more of us will enjoy that Peace too in our lives, in what we care about, what we want to see done in this World,

Imagine for example that instead of using the genuius and creativity God has given us to think of ways to harm each other, we harness it to overcome cancer, all the illnesses of the body and mind, all diseases, Aids,

to provide everyone with clean drinking water,

to eradicate malaria, and that would just be the start,

I Pray,

best wishes to you all
Peace at Easter to everyone,
Bob

Kudos to Mr. Newell.

With the calibre of 'leader' and 'guide' we the people now have, from Church to state to media, I rather despair that we will see anything worth a damn by way of meaningful word or sensible, let alone consistent deed when it comes to the small matter of 'the biggest single issue the human race faces'.

At least if there is the slightest chance of a decent distraction, vote or rating to be had diving off on something trivial at the expense of the real issues.

Heck, next thing we'll find is some pol without a single green bone in his body is up for 'climate czar'...

Oh.

VISIONARY BLINDNESS

How poignant that Tony Blair thinks the 鈥淔inal Battle鈥 is between perverted Islamic terrorism and Christian democratic capitalism (and that he is God鈥檚 鈥渕an to save us鈥). How significant that Mr Bean-Counter-Brown鈥檚 moral compass points diametrically away from one of the most moral beings on the planet. Do they have no eyes to see; these men of vision: Blair and Brown? The Buddhist Dalai Lama 鈥 epitome of non-violence 鈥 stands smiling compassionately in the midst of our semi-godlessness, as the atheist Chinese complete the violation of his people and their land, yet still commanding OUR Mammonophilic 鈥渞espect鈥. Surely the final battle, that the planet is losing daily, is between the runaway cleverness of Western man and the suffocated wisdom of a vanishing few. Small wonder that the Dalai Lama is foretold to be the last of his line.

what are you doing with Newsnight? The review was out of kilter and the whole format was slewed. Kindly keep to schedule as we proles live organised lives and the least disruption throws us into turmoil. I blame Barron

For those who might be interested, some perspective on the week's financial shenanigans:

The Ex-Presidents' Club:

And Meet The Carlyle Group
Former World Leaders and Washington Insiders Making Billions in the War on Terrorism

And, in their own words:

I'll not be weeping at their funeral...

And, from my favourite columnist,

Hi Ed - amazing, wonderful links as always. Can we have a whole Newsnight Special programme on the Carlyle Group?

10 days to war? More like 60 years at least, when the need for oil started to drive both the U.S. and Europe into killing and robbing like a heroin addict.

Why is this episode of Newsnight (Friday, 14 March) still not available in the 主播大秀 iPlayer?

Over the weekend, more than half of it was chopped off the Windows Media Player version.

Could someone please repair whatever technical difficulty occurred before the 7-day rights limit kicks in? I'm missing part of routine Newsnight fix. :-)
