Since we bought him he's scored 36 goals in 59 games. Brilliant record.

Best 拢1.5m Wolves have ever spent.

Can't argue with Ebanks Blake for best championship player of the year, it's as blatant as Gerrard for permiership player of the year.

League One vote would go to Fabian Delph. I know he's young but definitely the most watchable player in the division and has been a revelation this season.

League Two vote goes to Paul Benson, been a shining light in an often underimpressing Dagenham team.

Thoughts?

As a Foxes fan, I feel Fryatt deserves his award. However I presume that Cox and Lambert ran Fryatt close. Surprised Beckford hasn't been mentioned, but I guess that his injury and attitude hampered his chances.

Ebanks-Blake probably deserves his title of best player in the football league having had two great seasons, but I think he was picked because he's an easy choice for goal of the season..

Personally, I think Joe Garner's goal against Southampton for Forest was much better.

To have the vision to look up and shoot from where he was and still find the target so perfectly is a much better goal.

As for the other awards, Grant Holt has scored a hat-full of penalties, and so I think he could be a little undeserving of his title.

Same goes for Fryatt. Yes, he has scored plenty this season, but he's at Leicester who are top of the league, and it smacks of awarding people because of who they play for.

In my opinion, Simon Cox should have won it because he plays for an unfashionable side in Swindon, yet has still managed to score 27? goals.

how can fryatt win it ahead of lambert hes got the best team in the division behind him and looks to be greedy lambert also sets up loads of goals and drops back into midfield to help out and if you watched rovers every week you would see we dont have the most creative midfield for anyone who hasnt seen lambert go on youtube and watch his wonder goals

Seems like an obvious one but Grant Holt has been a massive boost for Shrewsbury Town's play off push in league two so i have to say him for that division.

I think that Sylvan Ebanks Blake deserves his title ,and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sylv for his time in Plymouth,when he was at Argyle we got as far up as fourth place at one point.I think that he has the abilty to go all the way,who knows with the current shortage of strikers he might stand a chance of getting into the England squad.

Sylvan's goal was absolutely superb. Pace to pull off the defender, strength to hold him off, audacious skill and belief to nutmeg the centre half and then lash it in the top corner. Absolutely sublime. What a player he is.

Your blog only really seems to mention strikers.

Best player for Oldham this season is without a doubt Chris Taylor. Scoring 10 goals from the left wing and being a joy to watch. An Oldham lad born and bred, who just wants to play for his home town.

Seems a bit slap dash just to mention all the players around the magic 20 goal mark. Usually your blogs are a very interesting read.

Ebanks-Blake - the right choice?

All wolves fans are insulted by the blogs ridiculous implication...

I have never seen the best of Ebanks-Blake because whenever we play him at Ashton Gate or at Plymouth or Wolves but his record speaks for itself.

I think Lambert should have got league 1 player of the year. Even though i'm a Bristol City fan i think he is far better than Fryatt if you had a look at goal per chance i think Lambert would come out on top because my dad who goes to Rovers home and away says he doesnt get many chances yet he still scores regular goals.

But are these awards given due to that position of the club?? Because im sure there are some players who may not play for high flyers but make an impact at their club, for example Marvin Elliot of Bristol City was most wanted by Wolves and Portsmouth in January yet he only got rank 31

Ebanks-Blake has the making of a great striker, its not just his goal record, he鈥檚 both footed, deceivingly quick, he works tirelessly for the team, his play is very intelligent and for a guy who is 5鈥�10鈥� isn鈥檛 bad in the air plus once he has the ball, your not knocking him off it!!!

Well done Wanderers Number 9, potentially two golden boots in two seasons and only just 23.

I鈥檓 so proud of my club this year and what it鈥檚 achieved this year, the Championship title would be the icing on the cake.

Was goal of the season just for the Championship or all three divisions? Because if so Simon Cox's goal against Walsall was one of the best goals I've ever seen. He also deserved the player of the year award ahead of Matty Fryatt who is playing in a much better team.

I guess the next thing to ask would be, how long till we see him playing top flight football?

For me the goal of the season should of either been Steve Watsons for Wednesday V's United or Marcus Tudgays in the return fixture, both world class goals. Although I can see why Ebanks-Blake got it as his goal was quality and he has been brilliant all season.

Suprised no mention of Lee Grant though, possibly one of the best keepers in the league and at one point was linked with an England call up!

I know this is off topic but if Steven Gerrard wins the Premiership Player of The Year, as ClarkySparky (post # 2) suggested, that is an absolute joke and a farce.

Nemanja Vidic is the most deserving by quite some distance, followed by Frank Lampard. Just because Steven and Liverpool have played well over the past couple of months doesn't mean he is deserving of the Player of the Year accolade.

Back on the topic, Ebanks-Blake has been superb this season and is fully deserving of the award. I really hope that he can take this form into the Premiership, he really is one for the future.

I am a Liverpool fan myself so maybe i shouldnt comment here but my father is a Leeds United fan so i do always have a close eye on what happens in the Football League and enjoy watching it as a neutral fan as there are always exciting matches and some good football... well usually!

Personally Ebanks-Blake was probably the best choice for Championship player of the year but as an Irishman i would've loved to have seen Doyle get it but he has been a little too hit and miss throughout the season.

But one question... why on earth was Matty Fryatt named League One player of the year!?!?! He is nowhere near the best player in the division. Ricky Lambert should have won hands down. He is playing for an unfashionable side in the division and has scored a hatful as why he is top scorer in the division whereas Fryatt plays for the top team, the pre-season promotion favourites and yet hasnt been anything to particuarly write home about. I think Fabian Delph and Jermaine Beckford should've been in with a shout but maybe thats just in my opinion.

Grant Holt League Two player of the year? Not by a long shot! Scoring penalties doesnt make you the best. Wee Charlie MacDonald gets my vote. With all due respect he is too good for League Two football.

Why are footballer of the year chosen with 2 onths of the season to go?
What happens if someone scores hattricks in every game from now on in to win promotion for his club?
Or a goalkeeper keeps a clean sheet for the rest of the season including the playoff final in the penalty shoot out?

As his old PE teacher i'd like to say i taught him everything he knows .... but it wouldn't be true!! 'The boy done good' as they say.....

I daresay each of the winners has been a great player this season.
But how is their performance measured?
And why are the awards so soon?
And -if this is the "correct" time of year- why not the Premiership aswell?
It looks just a little like they are given by schoolboy fans who love their goal-scoring forwards; and are too impatient to wait until the end of the season to deliver a measured and measurable decision.
If I were one of the winners, I'd feel great, over the moon etc. But I'd also have a nagging doubt that the timing of the awards, and the lack of clarity of the scoring system had cheapened my award.

League one Player of the Year should have gone to Simonn Cox, the lad has scored 24 goals, including 3 hat tricks in a team fighting for relegation. Look up the videos for his goals against Walsall and Fenerbache (pre-season) on you-tube, and most will agree that this striker will be playing Championship football next season.

To finish top scorer when your team is quality throughout is easier than carrying a team.

I've come across Simon Cox at Swindon due to his goalscoring exploits this season but I've never actually seen him play until reading this blog. I checked out his goal against Walsall (look on YouTube) and I would urge anyway who hasnt seen it to have a look- quite sublime!!

Oh and btw how can Ebanks-Blake win goal of the season for his strike against Charlton when that was during last year's campaign?

SEB was probably the best player in the first half of the season, but at the current time it would be fairer to rank him equal with a group of three or four others, or in the team of the season, say.

I always have doubts when strikers are named as "best player" just because they have something they can be easily measured by. Anyone keep stats on the number of point-blank saves a keeper makes, for example? Thought not. The busiest goalies are often at the wrong end of the table, anyway.

Probably the real best player of the season is a lesser-known stalwart who holds together a team struggling at the bottom, or an ever-present surrounded by constant changes. For example, you take Ebanks-Blake and put him in the Charlton team, say, or back at Argyle, and he wouldn't be winning the best player award even if he was exactly the same player he is now.

Gerrard is the best player in the world right now along with Messi, and would be the right choice for player of the year! dont get me wrong Vidic has had a good season but Gerrard has single handedly drove Liverpool to where they are today! also i think Vidic would be embarressed picking up the award after GERRARD MADE A FOOL OF vidic at Old Scumfard! o an i forgot to mention the Fact Torres megged him in that stroll in the park liverpool had in Manchester just confirmed Gerrard should win the award!!

from all the comments about holt only scoring penalties - so you're all saying you have to be a high scoring striker to be player of the season? I doubt any of you who have commented on here have seen holty play for the shrews this season - what he brings to the team is so much more than his goals, his link up play and work rate has been the catalyst for many a good shrews performance, whether he scores or not.

Its a myth that its easier to score if you play for a better team. Yes, in theory the service to the front man is better, but teams are also far more likely to defend deep and put more players behind the ball against you if you play for a good side making it tougher if anything to score.

As a Burnley fan I believe that an honourable mention should go to Graham Alexander. Not suggesting for a moment he should've won the award, but at 37 years old he's played every single minute of every game Burnley have played this season, which due to various cup runs is considerably more football than anybody else playing in the football leagues, and is the lynchpin of what's been the best season we've had in my lifetime.

And last weekend he trotted out at right back for Scotland with the unenviable (and unfortunately not particularly succesful) task of marking Robben...

He's a model professional who just never seems to tire (did I mention he's 37?!) and an example to anybody!

Also Robbie Blake - form of his life and made some premier league defences look distinctly average!

What a fantastic striker this boy is. It's such a shame that these days, if a striker (or a player of any position) is playing in the football league, they automatically don't get a look in for England. This didn't happen years ago when Bully banged in 2 goals against Scotland when playing in the 3rd tier of English football. I'd have Blake ahead of nthe likes of Carlton Cole/Bent any day.

What is great about SEB is the way he absolutely lashes the ball when he is given an opportunity. He doesn't really buy into any of this side-footing into the corner - if he gets a chance he will make sure he hits the target and make sure he hits the ball as hard as he possibly can!

SEB really does remind me of a certain Mr.Shearer!

Beckford is the first player to 30 goals in all four divisions - 31 goals now in 30 games in a season when he has had two managers - he doesn't take penalties (he does - but badly!), he's scored throughout the season and has stepped up at the business end of the season (unlike Fryatt). Its a shame that his disciplinary record hs cost him but Fryatt
isn't in the same class.

Hooray for SEB. He's been the most consistent player in Wolves squad this season and is the reason we are top of the league. Other players have been hot and clod, but he has been outstanding.

As for the prem, Garrard will win the award. He IS Liverpool. Good luck to him anyway. Nice to see English players winning accolades...

re: 37. He's currently injured after international duty with the U21s, so it's not like he's off the radar. He's working his way up and one way or another will find his way into the EPL again. He's got a couple of years yet to earn a chance of an England career.

The reason players are rarely selected from teams outside of the top league, I would guess, is the standard of the opposition. Bent's not been firing on all cylinders, sure, but Ebanks-Blake plays against defences like, with the greatest respect, Burnley's, whose top performing 37-year old Graham Alexander was completely outclassed by a top league international winger on saturday.

On another note, I would go with Simon Cox for League One as his goals (including what is easily goal of the season against Walsall too, in any division) are single-handedly keeping STFC out of relegation. Wih maybe a little help from Billy Paynter.

Doyle? Are you having a laugh? From a player who has been linked with 8m moves to Villa throughout the season I expected a lot more. Playnig in what everyone seems to be the best team in the league he should have scored more.

SEB is superb, he's got the arrogance infront of goal as well as being a supreme team player-his work ethic is second to none.

I think league 1 should of gone to lambert or cox.

lambert is top goalscorer in the league on 25 and also has 11 assists to his name. That is on top of hitting the woodwork 11 times this season. He is an all round team player that isnt there just to stick it in the back of the net.

Cox, 24 goals to his name for a team that has really struggled this season is mightily impressive.

These two should have been above Matty Fryatt, with Lambert getting the award (bit of bias there)

SEB is by far the most deserved winner of the award, the closest runner up being kightly (although i'm slightly biased!).

Although i havent seen much of him Cox, or even Lambert sound more deserving of the League 1 award. As for Beckford he's an absoloute idiot thats prob why he didnt win! Although you cant argue with his goals he goes missing alot of the time.

Gerrard should defo win the premier league player, and if anyone else wins it its a disgrace! Vidic is nowhere near, take him out of Man Utd's side an they wont miss him. Gerrard on the other hand...
If your talking best defenders in the league players you have to think of players like Jagielka and Lescott have done extremely well in a lesser team.

SEB'll have all of those in his back pocket next year mind! Premier league watch out!

I'm a Plymouth fan and I agree with Ebanks-Blake for player of the season and goal of the year. I only wonder how we would have done if he hadn't have left :(

I don't think many could argue that the championship and L2 player of the year went to the right players but in L1 I feel the same as others that Lambert or Cox should of got the award which i said on a 606 thread yesterday.

On a different note I am a bit annoyed that a non-striker didn't get the awards. For instance (a bit of bias here) Bristol Rovers captain Stuart Campbell has been truly fantastic for us this season. He plays Central Midfield and protects the backline with some of his amazing challenges and energy. He is just as important to Rovers as Lambert IMO but in a different way. I remember Fulham fans being extremley impressed with him over our 2 fa cup games against them last season. George Boyd has been another that has impressed me as well as beckford (although he's an idiot).

I think the Championship Player of the Year should have gone to Chris Eagles he has been immense this season, Also Jason Scotland has been fantastic in this divison his strength and his sharp shooting has earnt him rave reviews and rightly so

In League 1 Simon Cox has been the starlet of the divison by a country mile, anyone who saw his goal again Walsall would i agree that took my breathe away, Gary Hooper has been quality considering he is only 21 and still learning .

In League 2 Jack Lester has been quality he is far to good for that divison and im sure he will move up the leagues elsewhere, Tom Craddock is trying his best to keep Luton in the football league he should have been looked at.

Kightly deserved the award, he is the main supply line and is more likely to succed in the Prem than Ebanks-Blake.

The way Lambert was overlooked for the L1 award just shows how only the 'bigger' teams have a shout in this category. yes Leicester are a better team (league standings show) but for an individual award to go to Fryatt is a mess. Lambert is a far better all round player. I'm looking forward to the L1 team of the season- as i expect Lambert will be omitted for Beckford (former premier league Leeds Utd) and Fryatt (former premier league Leicester).

I'm a Burnley fan and he wouldn't even be in my top 10 Burnley players for the season and has recently struggled to even make the team.

Problem with these awards is hardly any of us see anywhere near enough to make an informed opinion.

So close to being the top goalscorers in each league. Why does this not surprise me?

It is a credit to Michael Kightly that despite the general concensus amongst us Wolves fans that he hasnt been at his best this season he has 21 assists and 8 goals. No other midfielder can get anywhere near that in this division.

I didn't want to get into a debate over this because I can imagine the frustration of Championship fans seeing a Premiership converstion on a blog devoted to them.

Gerrard has been immense these past few months, there's no denying that.

But over the entire season (barring one game) Vidic has been nothing short of incredible.

Vidic is the most worthy winner and I'm a Chelsea fan.

I think it is a massive shame that this award is all about strikers. It's not about the player of the season at all, it's pretty much a golden boot award. Whilst all of the award winners are worthy of mention I'm really disappointed that not only all the winners but pretty much all the nominees were strikers, it shows a short-sighted kind of playground mentality amongst those making the decisions!

I think that yes he has played well...but look at Watford now....Tommy Smith has been there everytime when Watford have looked like it was over he provides that final pass or the shot him self which gets Watford the point or all 3 points....You can rely on Tommy Smith to turn the bad weather into sunshine....

Sylvan hasn't only scored goals for Wolves in one of the "top teams" though.

When we signed him in January 2008 he had already scored 13 goals for Plymouth. He then scored another 12 for Wolves in the 2nd half of the season. Just goes to show what a consistent goalscorer he is.

He is going to win 2 Golden Boots for scoring 47+ in consecutive seasons. Any player is always a shoe-in for the award when you score that many goals no matter who you play for.

Not to take anything away from him but isn't this a bit early? What if in our remaining 7 games Jimmy Kebe gets 7 goals and 5 assists and single handedly gets us promoted.
Alright I'm done laughing but my point is shouldn't the player of the season be decided once the season is completed.
Not that it probably wouldn't be Ebanks-Blake anyway so this comment is perhaps redundant..

SEB is definately player of year, Goals, Team play and confdence in his ability. Sign of a good striker is doing well during bad periods. Coventry penalty miss was an example, could have been a real turning point but scored in next home game and scored his next pen.

Special mention to other Wolves players- Iwelumo, no-one would have predicted the early season impact he had. Kightly-pure class. Jarvis- when fit Wolves most dangerous player.

Finally on Wolves, Jody Craddock. A true Pro, knows he wont have a contract end of year and been in and out of team at times during MM reign. But come in and been absoloutley superb.

League 1, cant believe beckford didnt win it, amazing strike record.

Seems like the easier way out if you ask me, plenty of midfielders and defenders have been outstanding this year, but just because a striker is the one who nets it at the end, they get all the praise and awards?

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GUYS!!! It's Player of the YEAR(2008), not season. It's not that hard to work out

Nice to see a hefty mention to his time at Plymouth. It's great to see how well he's done since leaving, and I've no bitterness towards him. His departure was always going to be an inevitability rather than a possibility, given the sell-out clause we had to tag onto his contract so that he would come to Plymouth and not newly-relegated Watford.

At this point in the season I agree with all of them, but as you mentioned the timing is just stupid.

What if Jason Scotland now gets another 6-7 goals in the games remaining, single handedly putting Swansea into the playoffs and then scores anotehr couple to get them promoted, would he not have as good if not better case for POTY ?

It just seems unnecessarily silly to make the awards with up to 10 games remaining of the season.

I personal disagree with the choice of Ebanks-Blake as championship player of the season. As the only reason he has been choosen for this is because he is top goal scorer in the league at this moment in time, and even then quite a few of his goals are from penalties. Out of his 24 goals 4 have been directly from penalties, and one maybe even two have been from penalty rebounds.
Where as a player like Kevin Doyle, doesn't take penalties for Reading and is on 18 goals, and as Reading have slotted away 6 penalties this season if doyle had of taken them he could quite easily be in the same position as Ebanks-Blake, and as he has play in 3 less games as Ebanks blake aswell makes his record even better in my opinion.

But why does it have to be a goal scorer why can't it be a defender like Franck Queudrue, who has been instrumental to Birmingham City only conceding 33 goals this season and has scored two of their forty-seven which in 20 games isn't bad for a player who plays at left back one week, centre-half the next and gets put on the bench even though he's their best defender.

Or Even a midfielder Preston North Ends - Ross Wallace. Who doesn't score goals but creates them, and assists don't really get accounted for. As without Ross Wallace, Preston North End could and probably would be in a position to slip towards relegation.

In close I beleive the award should have gone to Doyle, and Wallace would have come second, with Kightly coming third.

Hats off to Blakey, he's a brilliant player who shows fight and commitment on and off the pitch, that's one of the many reasons he won this award I would imagine.

Personally, I would have gone with Michael Kightly or Karl Henry but I can't deny Blakey the award, he is head and shoulders above any striker in the league.

Let's hope he bangs a couple in tonight against the Blues.............
