My photo would be my laptop, desk, digital radio, teacup & boring. I might go out for the day to create an air of mystery.

I emailed you a few days ago to say that the Forums I belong to did the same thing in 2004, but I only got an automated reply from you.
We ran the shoot for 5 months at midday on the first day of the month. During that August I took a photo of the hovercraft terminal on the Isle of Wight and one of our American members who was visiting me at the time. Because I don't have a digital camera I had to submit it a few days later when I could get it processed and then scan it through.
Unfortunately, the photos got erased for some reason, so the idea of putting the ones that PM will get into a book is a very good idea. You could even donate some of the proceeds to charity.
Thank you to Eddie, Rupert and all at PM for tonight's beautifully edited snapshot of Nick Clarke's funeral. Perfect.
My photo may well be like yours. SparklyHelen, but that's the whole point! It's pointless, and that's why I love the idea :-)

I am the person who did the short interview on today's show about the photo book...thanks' Eddie for the opportunity.
Just to let everyone know that all of the profits from the book will go to a charity. However, I still need to find a charity to donate to. Ideally I would like to find a charity that has something to do with inspiring creativity in underprivileged children.
If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them.

Hi Sinclair, it was a great interview, & I am sure there will be some inspiration here. I am racking my brains at the moment, because I know I know of a project run by a grass roots NGO, just can't think what it was at the mo'. Failing grey matter, but check back.

The clips of Nick Clarke's funeral had me sobbing like a baby in public, particularly the thoughts shared by Nick's widow. It seems that she is as strong and dignified a person as her husband.
The rest of the show was wonderful as well Eddie.

I was in the bath with the toothbrush going and turned it off. Not being at all sarcastic but the speeches were very thought provoking and I hope the 主播大秀 lives up to tne sentiments.

Fearless (17) Eddie has not actually asked us to take photos thatcan be published on a BBc web site. Ii has not been taken as read that they are to be published but eddie could end up with a great gallery of "interesting" picture that perhaps are not allowed on a 主播大秀 server. The legal bit all comes to mind again...
I too am likely to be near a PC but it could be a pair of spectacles.
My concern from here is that the pointlessness of this is great but the "event" will be missed by the millions who don't cant' won't listen to Radio 4. And its their window that may be most interesting :-)

I recall that he did invite comments on whether the listener would prefer a moment of silence before the bongs or his dulcet tones right up to the chimes.

"If he had done x, he may have done y."
I think NOT. It's "MIGHT". And it's not "might of" either, but "might have done...".
Am I the only one in the universe who finds this apparently universal change in the language grates on the ear? I accept that language changes, but really...

The subjunctive is one of the highest and most dangerous developments in language, whereby we become able to speak of things which have never and may never actually happen or exist. A real goldmine for legislators and lawyers - a somewhat inbred lot anyway.
How abstract can we get?

I'm so relieved to hear this of/have discussion. Up until now I thought it was just a N.Ireland thing because of our accent.
I have read newsletters by "grown-ups" with the 鈥渙f鈥 instead of 鈥渉ave鈥 and been totally appalled. In a very sad way I am relieved that it is not a parochial problem.
Yep, with you all - it's because it's so often shortened to "might've" in conversation, but then written incorrectly. I seem to remember I posted on this a while back as it's on of my pet hates. That and the senseless use of "literally" for emphasis, but I really shouldn't harp on about that one again...

Aperitif - no you certainly shouldn't harp on, that's my job! But I know exactly what you mean & it irritates me intensely too. Local newspapers seem to be the worst offenders at the "might of" & "Could of" game. BTW I tried to use italics in that first line but I bet they haven't worked. I'm feeling a bit tired having forced myself to compose interesting, witty, modest, ironical,self-deprecating but quietly boastful Xmas message for sending to far-flung friends with the creative home-made (by 9 yr old)cards. (They are better than they sound- honestly. Don't know about the message though.)
Nope, just previewed & the whole lot came out in italics. Can't be bothered to try it again tonight. Can switch em on but not off, it seems.

I work on CBeebies but have you seen the new Jackanory on 主播大秀1 or the older kids' 主播大秀 channel C主播大秀? It's amazing & will inspire our nation's PSP-playing kids to read again.

Well, it seems it's time for all of us to admit to being pedants when it comes to literary/linguistic matters! My pet peeve? When people say "You can visibly see...". As opposed to seeing with my ears, maybe? Gah! I can feel my blood pressure rising just thinking about it!
Val P, to link your blog, just paste the blog address into the Website space under Contact Details here, and your name will come out like mine and others. We can then view your masterpiece - I for one can't wait.
On the subject of pet hates- I deal a lot with police officers interviewing suspects, and they always start telling me about the offence by saying basically. They carry on using that word throughout the interview. It's so meaningless. Another word which is overused is "essentially" in the same way really. Imagine how irritating it is to be trapped in a locked police station being subjected to bad grammar for hours on end!

My SO hates "right now", so universally used instead of a simple "now". Which means I have begun to hate it, because he always makes such a fuss (and I hate fusses).
When I listen to good rap (and I confess I can't name any artists - I'm not, as such, a 'fan') I'm always impressed at how creative people can be with language. I was a language teacher for many years, worked abroad, and still regard myself as a linguist, and love playing with words, marvelling at how flexible it can be, and laughing at the way changes in grammar can create changes in meaning.
Thank You. I love you all. Clearly each of us thought we were pedantically alone. But of course Lynne Truss wouldn't have been the huge success she was if we were.
(And I don't object to beginning a sentence with either 'but' or 'and', though I was taught not to.)
I hated formal grammar at school, but I loved doing precis, and I'm sorry that it seems to have died out as a taught skill (unless it has been revived since my four left school). As a tool for honing both thought and understanding it has no equal, and many a journalist would benefit from understand how to prune judiciously.
PS split infinitives and incorrectly placed adverbs is another bugbear - but I won't go there.
Since we're nominating our most hated parts of the English language can I nominate 'going forward'?
Often used by management types when they mean 'in the future'.
Meant to give the verbal implication of forward movement and unstoppable momentum, i.e. "We forecast better returns and greater profits, going forward".
Often convoluted to hide undesireable side-effects. I personally heard a new CEO in a Footsie-100 company use it to describe swinging job cuts (he shed over one-third of the workforce). My remark to a colleague " The ones who lose their jobs won't regard it as much of a forward move", turned out to be very prophetic.

I admit to a certain amount of flexibility on the organic development of language, ie if it sounds more clumsy when expressed correctly (a subjective view here of course), then I'll accept corruption!

Valery P (62) - love the image conjured up by spilt infinitives: spreading slowly out across the floor, resisting every attempt to mop them up with a copy of 'Hart's Rules for compositors' in one hand and Fowler's 'King's English' in the other.
I'm quite happy to accept that language is fluid, to continue the analogy. It's just that some changes grate more than others.
Think I'm going to have trouble keeping up today - so many threads all at once.

I deplore the increasing use of "ourselves" or "myself" instead of just "our" or "me" as in "that song was written by myself".
I once worked for a government agency which dealt with solicitors' firms and I always remember reading a letter which contained the phrase "in respect of the letter from yourselves to ourselves dated ..." grrrrrrrrr!
