    In my view, all who manage to overcome politically correct assaults on Christmas will still retain some of that childhood magic which promises hope, peace and the shared gifts of membership of the wider human family.     If you can keep a candle burning in the thick of that lot – fire regulations and health and safety legislation allowing – you're either an angel worthy of polar tree position or a wiser man than the three originals.
    
    For Christians and for all men and women of any sincerely held faith, traditional celebration of holy days dedicated to peace, goodwill and family is surely worth the effort.

    In troubled times – brutally brought home to us by events in Iraq and elsewhere – human nature needs the salve of fellowship, however it is enjoyed.
    I think Christmas offers brief respite in a busy, work-driven, dangerous world for relaxation and reflection on what might be possible for families, communities and indeed nations, if that single promise of kindness – key to all faiths – were to be heeded and accepted.

    It seems to me that cheery door-to-door carol singers have dwindled, persuaded by - that every street is populated by monsters and molesters, Santas have been driven from their department store grottos in profit-obsessed cost cuts and some workplace trimmings banned for fear of scratching employee sensitivities.

    This Christmas, we who are lucky enough to share food, drink and fellowship with family and friends, do so fully aware of the warnings that precede our festivity. Eat too much and we risk the stigma of weight gain – punishable by NHS rejection. Take too much wine and we become the binge-drinking shame of our country. Light up post-dinner cigar or cigarette and you're a pariah.
    
    That's a lot to fight – but it's worth it again to share in spite of everything – sincerest wishes for acceptance of a timeless Christmas promise of peace, kindness and above all, genuine hope.
