Save Election Night campaign forcing rethink

Vote countingThere's no doubt the has an extra frisson this year because of the impending General Election.

But back here in the region, there's some more news on just when those crucial election votes will be counted.

As I've reported before, many of our councils are looking to shift election night counts from the traditional Thursday night to Friday morning.

That's not gone down well amongst hardcore politicos who've begun their own , although I'm not sure there's too much sign of public disquiet and riots on the streets just yet.

was considering counting their votes on Friday, but they may be rethinking.

The area includes one safe Labour seat - Stephen Byers' - but a crucial one for the Conservatives - .

They are now looking at the possibility of a Thursday count, though no final decision has been made.

And an attempt is being made to make think again.

They want to count the city's three seats on Friday, but to return the count back to Thursday.

They've even set up a to garner support.

My colleague has now been told that they will all be abolished by the Conservatives - including .

There may be the possibility of then setting up a successor organisation if there's local demand, but there's no clue about what form it will take.
