Did Obama quit?

Justin Webb | 23:08 UK time, Friday, 4 April 2008

I will reply to the discussion on rationality and the presidential campaign over the weekend - but first this vital news has been brought to my attention. An ABC man has . Well, actually it was some time ago and it was only the smell of smoke and, errr well.

I must say there is a slightly priggish air to this, isn't there?

As Tapper puts it: "It's not a big deal in the scheme of things - the war on Iraq, a major economic crisis - indeed, it's miniscule. Hardly worth mentioning.

"Except that I don't like feeling that I wasn't being dealt with honestly. And, as much as citizens who are suspect of the media might scoff at such a notion, many of us consider ourselves to be your representatives to help make sure our leaders are telling us the truth, and leading the country down a path we're confident is the right one. (Corny, I know.)"

No, not at all! How lucky we are to have ABC newsmen smelling the breath of the great and the good...

In case anyone is still interested in anything of substance, is it my imagination or is the British press more willing to discuss posed on the campaign trail? It's a depressing piece to read, but real people are really worried and airing those fears seems reasonable to me...

You guys need to get a life! Don't you have anything better to report on? Perhaps some "real news" from your own country?

Thanks for calling BS on this, Justin. It saddens me that my country's press doesn't care if Obama's life is in danger, but they do care about whether he smokes or not. Actually, your juxtaposition of these two stories makes me wonder if the death threats actually drove him to take up smoking again. That said, the next time you want to start self-righteously tongue-waggling about something Rev. Wright said, you might want to stop and think about stories like these!

An Obama assassination theory is much ado about nothing. While I am not saying that there aren't individuals who would like nothing more than to kill him (or any of the other candidates for that matter), the Secret Service is pretty darn good at what they do. Get back to the issues Justin, please. After 7 years of the Bush-Cheney fear machine, my fellow Americans and I can no longer afford to base our politics on fear and hysteria. That is how Iraq happened.

Obama already confessed to falling off the wagon ... and getting on again ... during Chris Matthews Hardball College Tour at Westchester, PA.

And your second (tabloid) topic? Bite your tongue.

As a smoker myself, I know how hard it is to stifle the urge

Remembering Winston's liking for cigars, and that of Castro, smoking didn't impede their success - or is this another swipe at cigarette smokers? On the second point, it appears that the Clinton press have some reason for pointing out a possible assassination, if he achieves the nomination. I'm sure Barack is well aware of the possibility, but then it's a fact of life in the US, and nothing to do with colour, as the gunning down of the Kennedy brothers proved.
