Owen Paterson

Mark Devenport | 16:44 UK time, Friday, 11 January 2008

The Tory NI Spokesman Owen Paterson makes his debut appearance on Inside Politics this weekend. The discussion covers defining the troubles as a war, offering ex paramilitaries an amnesty, the prospects for devolving justice this year and whether the NIO should be merged into a department of the nations. He also praises plans for redeveloping security bases here, but adds a big "but" when asked if the MoD should hand them over for free.

Inside Politics is broadcast at a quarter to one on 主播大秀 Radio Ulster.

VICTIMS NEED A HERO

Judging by his performance I suggest you not be in any hurry to have Mr Paterson make a return appearance on Inside Politics. Good Lord, the man has hardly a firm opinion about anything.

That鈥檚 by-the-by. The issue I want to highlight arises out of your question about whether or not the resolution of Paul Quinn鈥檚 Murder [carried out by the South Armagh Brigade of the Provisional Irish Republican Army] should be a pre-condition for the devolution of Policing & Justice powers. I am puzzled as to who [you think] would impose or suggest such a pre-condition:

路 Not Shaun Woodward, who would 鈥榮trangle his own Granny鈥 if it would help to achieve the May, 2008 deadline for transfer of powers.

路 Not the DUP, whose leader huffed and puffed throughout 2006 that, inter alia, Sinn Fein/IRA would have to give up the Killers of Robert McCartney and return the 拢26million from the Northern Bank Robbery before he would share power. So much for his demented ramblings. Now in cosy Fascist Coalition with Sinn Fein, the DUP have abandoned the basic standards of justice of a civilised society to wallow, hog-like, in the swill of the Assembly trough.

路 Not the UUP, SDLP or Minor Parties which, fighting for self-preservation, are prepared to buttress the Fascist Coalition even if it means abandoning the Victims and Survivors to their miserable fate and eternal sadness.

路 Not any pressure from the PSNI whose crime detection rate in cases of IRA involvement is bordering on the (intentionally?) non-existent, exemplified by their abject failure to convict anyone in connection with the Heinous Murders of Robert McCartney and Paul Quinn. That failure chimes with the wishes of their Political Masters who would sup with Auld Nick to keep the Assembly in existence.

路 Not the retail therapy addicted Ulster Public that prefers mindless purchases at the Supermarket, the Chainstore, the Holywood Exchange, Sprucefield, Junction One and IKEA above the need for Justice for everyone. The Ulster Public is the 鈥楳e Generation鈥 writ large.

路 Not those people in Cullyhanna who could provide evidence against that twenty strong gang of Degenerates and Psychopaths from the South Armagh Brigade of the Provisional Irish Republican Army who were responsible for the torturing, beating, kicking, clubbing, gouging, pulping, crippling and finally the killing of that poor soul, Paul.

As you know Mark, usually I like to end on a positive note; it鈥檚 difficult on this occasion so I simply want to ask: Is there anyone out there who has the courage to do the right thing by Robert McCartney, Denis Donaldson or Paul Quinn? In the interests of Justice, these Victims need a Hero to stand up for them. Any Volunteers?
