1868. That's how many vacancies there are across the NI Civil Service, according to a written answer from the Finance Minister Peter Robinson.

With so many vacancies why do senior civil servants still get their large bonuses? What are they doing to tackle this? Nothing. How can the Civil Service compete with private companies? Better pay, better conditions, closer to home and more people orientated.

There is never close to 1868 jobs in the tele on a tuesday, which is public sector jobs night.

Maybe if they advertised a bit better they would fill the roles.

When I was trying to recruit a manager last year, somebody from Diamond Recruitment told me that unemployment in NI was 1.2%, and most of those didn't want to work.

Well give them a job in the civil service then. There's a big difference between a job and work, and the latter is a completely foreign concept in most parts of the civil service.

So there you go. Problem solved. The civil service gets their vacancies filled and the people who don't want to work still don't have to.

A very interesting figure Mark. Together that would equate to around 4 of the smaller Departments having all their posts vacant. When Robinson gets his usual excitable self about Civil Service sick leave figures, he should understand that more working days are 'lost' each week/month/year through vacancies than through sick leave. The math is easy, even for a Finance Minister.
