In the small hours of a Monday morning from 2-3am you can hear a selection of my favourite new tunes compiled into an hour-long mixtape of nonstop music. All the audio is sourced from the 主播大秀 Introducing Uploader - some of it recommended by friends and colleagues and some discovered via Twitter and my own Fresh On The Net blog.

From 3am each Monday the latest mixtape is available free via the 6 Music Downloads Page - where you'll also find archived episodes from the previous 4 weeks. All the tracklists and start times for each track are published here - together with a link to each artist's website. These are the listings for Monday, August 27th.

LET'S GO SAFARI - BYOB [Starts 0:14]

Poole outfit Let鈥檚 Go Safari formed in August 2010 and consist of Ryan Wood on vocals, Clive Coats on guitar and programming, Oli Crisp on bass and James Mosley on drums. The band's stated goal is to "write simple, catchy songs in a frighteningly complex way." This is their latest single and - Willie Wonka style - they've placed place a golden ticket in one of the limited edition CDs. Said ticket can be redeemed from the band for, um... apparently that's for you to decide. Where can you buy one ? Well either online or at their next gig which takes place in London at Vibe Var later today - Monday, August 27th from 8pm

DENNIS - Caught In The Middle [Starts 3.57]

Dennis are an 8-piece "roots, folk-rock & brass band" from the former pit town of Hetton in County Durham. The individual members have played European tours, O2 Academy tours and National Brass Band finals with previous projects, and collaborate as DENNIS to create music influenced by their local heritage:听 brass bands, workingmens clubs, pit village life and stories of the working class. This track comes from their Colliery Welfare EP due out on September 10th. Not the easiest band name to Google, you鈥檒l them at online at d

JAC M & ZO脣 PHILLIPS - Rainy Thoughts [Starts 7.53]

This is a collaboration between Polish chillstep musician Jac M in Warsaw and 21-year old songwriter Zo毛 Phillips in rural Hertfordshire. Neither of them believes in giving away any hard factual information about themselves online, let alone a biog. However Zoe tells me she started out on clarinet at age 7, bought a drum kit at 10, has played at "countless initimate venues around the South East of England" and been praised by Greg James. She has a BMus degree in Music Technology from the University of Surrey and enjoys collaborating with other electronic producers. Such as, for instance, the shadowy and enigmatic Jac M.

ASTRO-PHYSICS 鈥 Chances [Starts 12.58]

Brighton鈥檚 Astro-Physics are a 6 piece collective drawn together through a love of oldskool hip-hop. Influences range from N.E.R.D and The Roots through to The Fugees and early era Prodigy. They鈥檙e fronted by fronted by Rapper/MC Skilf, singer Rachel Mosleh and also include Steve Rainbow (bass), Martin Deering (drums), Jonny Coote (keys) and Mike Hawkins (guitar). Far from imitating their idols and influences their stated goal is to fuse hip-hop, rock and pop in a fiercely distinctive British fashion. Having recently undergone changes to their sound and lineup, Astro-Physics are, they tell us, 鈥渂ack in full force with a handful of new tracks, shows in the diary and a new EP called It鈥檚 a Mindstate鈥. From which this well-liked track is taken.

THE KNIEVEL DEAD - Something Of The Night [Starts 16.29]

The Knievel Dead's website offers us the options of News, Audio, Video, Images, Live and Links. But not, alas, anything called Biog or About.听 I eventually supplied the following info on their : "London based via the North East singer, songwriter and multi instrumentalist in the form of The Knievel Dead produces a blend of haunted malaise and harmonious alternative sound waves. Conceived after the break down of The Night Terrors whose demise spurred on the initiation to produce the d茅but album ".听 Said album was in fact launched this Saturday with a gig at the Dublin Castle in London, where former Night Terrors members Odel and Joe were joined by messrs Jeremy Knievel and Old Greg (possibly not their given names.) Apart from that, web-wise at least, their album release seems to be one of the best-kept secrets on the planet. Which is a shame because it's damn good.

NATALIE McCOOL 鈥 Fortune [Starts 19.38]

Well connected l definitely is - with fans ranging from Mark Radcliffe and Chris Martin to Paul McCartney and 眉ber producer - who was impressed enough to sign her to his label Hubris Records whilst she was still studying at LIPA. While there, she recruited her current band and her latest batch of songs has been taken up and championed by a tastemaker I trust more than all of the above rolled together - namely Fresh On The Net's resident Girl Music Guru the mighty - who featured Natalie as one of her Artists Of The Week earlier this month. meanwhile promises us that The Best Is Yet To Come. Watch this space.

EIGHT ROUNDS RAPID - Channel Swimmer [Starts 24.02]

This track by Eight Rounds Rapid drew overwhelming support from many discerning regulars on my other blog recently and listening to them you can hear why: the sound is raw, urgent and authentic - in a world of pastiche wannabes going through the motions, this band is the real deal. Their biog鈥檚 a bit sparse, but at least they鈥檝e got one: 鈥淓ssex bred four piece Eight Rounds Rapid write songs for themselves. Regardless of the latest musical fads and fashions they will produce a hard edged sound all their own. For better or for worse. They are: David Burke 鈥 Vocals, Jules Cooper 鈥 Bass, Simon Johnson 鈥 Guitar, and Lee Watkins 鈥 Drums.鈥

BLABBERMOUTH - Money Year [Starts 26.44]

Steve Thompson aka Blabbermouth grew up in Littlehampton on the South Coast of England. One afternoon in the loft he happened upon the classical guitar he'd once been encouraged to learn but never had. After playing in a range of bands at Art School, Steve took the a guitar he鈥檇 finally learned to play and went solo in 2006. He now writes and records music on the 45 ft roaming narrowboat "Whittington Myth" he shares with his wife and cat - and several summers ago Steve embarked on a successful busking tour of The Grand Union Canal. We played his music a number of times on my old Fresh On The Net shows and this song is taken from his third album 'Ramble' which was released in June through Proper Music Distribution.

ELLIOTT MORRIS - Stand Up, Be Heard [Starts 30.05]

Based in Lincolnshire, guitar virtuoso Elliott Morris (see photo above) is a longstanding friend of 主播大秀 Introducing on 6 Music. He's set to release two new EPs and embark on an extensive tour across the UK and Ireland this Autumn. This high energy track Stand Up, Be Heard comes from his forthcoming 4-track studio EP As The Waves Came In and features his equally talented younger brother Bevan on drums. Also released on September 10th to coincide with Elliott鈥檚 five-week string of dates will be a special live acoustic EP called Take One. Videos for the new tracks can be seen on while the full list of upcoming dates is on .

THE FADES - Be Your Man
[Starts 33.47]

A song as apparently simple as Be Your Man can be deceptively difficult to write and play 鈥 needing to be both minimal and massive at the same time. It's true that there's no fancy stuff in the lyrics or chord sequence yet 鈥 at the same time 鈥 it takes real musical smarts to get the voicing and arrangement right. You have to grab listeners in bar one, then keeps them mesmerised as the songs twists and builds right through the full four minutes. To bring it off takes the commitment, conviction 鈥 and deafening power 鈥 of a band like The Fades. Be Your Man comes from their debut studio album Ragnarok and is available in two versions 鈥 the one we've included on this week's mixtape - and the unexpurgated version. [Starts The band鈥檚 current single Foot In Your Mouth is available as a free download from their Facebook Page and Londoners can experience the full might of their live sound at the album launch on September 29th at The Borderline. Take ear protectors.

MIRACLES - Pieces Of You And Me
[Starts 37.50]

The band known as Miracles sprang from a chance meeting outside an East London bar earlier this year between producer Joe Philip and songwriter Heather Vansaint. The two fell to talking and within a couple of hours (and several beers) the project was born. Their goal is, we're told, "to straddle the line between electronic dance and indiem, creating a unique and impassioned sound as a platform to express their tales of love and loss." Pieces Of You And Me is the first of three releases planned for this year and will be available at a free download from their Bandcamp page on September 2nd. The tracks that follow will "explore further the length and depth of their contemporary alt electro sound, punctuated all the while by Joe鈥檚 impressive breadth of musical wizardry and Heather鈥檚 haunting and heartfelt vocal delivery, a combination that sounds as fresh on radio, as it does through broken speakers at a 5am squat party." So now you know.

DELTASOUND - Enemy [Starts 41.41]

"Hello. We鈥檙e Deltasound - a guitar/synth/noise band from the North East of England - and we play pre-apocalyptic electro-grunge. We play regularly around the UK and can be booked through the social networks below or by email via our website, where a full list of current gigs is available on the Live page. We've released a number of EPs and singles which you can get for nowt from our website, and our entirely self-produced debut album will also be available today (August 27th) from this selfsame site. We're a friendly bunch so drop us a line on here if you want to talk." That, my friends, is the way to win fans, make friends and influence people. I first played this band on 6 Music back in 2008 and they've just got better and better. I particularly love the classic loping groove from bassist Adrian Huggins and the wonderful smack-on-the-money drumming of Craig Hutchinson.

JOHNNO CASSON - This Is Essex [Starts 45.08]

Anyone who's actually lived in Essex will tell you that the country has suffered from a skewed and extremely unfair media protrayal over the years. The wideboy culture embodied by Ian Dury and recent reality TV shows is so embedded in our national psyche that Johnno Casson's unashamed and gentle paen to his adopted home comes as something of a shock. Yes the man behind the mask of quirky leftfield pop maverick is stepping out into the spotlight armed with little more than an acoustic guitar to make an album of stripped down, laid-back songs of heartfelt intensity. Originally born and raised London Johnno settled happily and permanently in the coastlands of Colchester and this tribute to the region was originally . It now stands proudly as the iconic closing track听 to Window Shopping which is is released by this Autumn on October 8th.

CARTESIAN JETSTREAM - Miniature Minotaurs [Starts 49.23]

Now here's a first. To the best of my recollection we've never featured a band from the Isle Of Man before either on the Mixtape or back in the old days of 6 Music Introducing: Fresh On The Net. Cartesian Jetstream are Phil Bell-Scott, Simon Kilgannon and Ben Scott who describe themselves as "rural misfits making ramshackle but groovy post-punk with psychedelic intentions - adhering to the rock cliche of interesting bands germinating in weird backwaters." They like to use drones and abstract loops in their sound and would ideally have liked to recruit an electric jug player just like the 13th Floor Elevators. However, deadpans drummer Ben, "they seem to be in short supply on the island". The band would also welcome advice from fellow musicians on how to score gigs far away from home "We want to start playing regularly on the mainland next year" they say "but wouldn't know where to start. Any tips would be welcomed."

FREE SWIM - Records in the Basement [Starts 56.29]

Free Swim not only have an interesting story to tell, but they've taken the trouble to share it in the entertaining and informative biog on their Facebook page. It's worth quoting here - if only so that a few of the other artists this week can look and learn. This, my friends, is an object lesson in how to write a proper band biography: funny, factual and fascinating.听

"Free Swim is the music of 30 year-old Secondary School Lab Technician Paul Coltof茅anu from Reigate. Having squandered the opportunity of a lifetime with another band in his early 20s, Paul ploughed headfirst into a six year wilderness of regret, woe and countless Friday evenings with nothing but a discontinued Casio keyboard, a growing collection of Frank Zappa records and a temperamental 8-track recorder for company. "

"After much time spent chilling at All Tomorrow's Parties, wandering the streets of Brooklyn or getting lost in Eastern Europe, in 2010 Paul created Free Swim - in which he plays and sings everything while flatmate David Knight contributes spoken word monologues. After three acclaimed "surreal concept" EPs, Free Swim became a live band last year featuring Paul and David augmented by Ryan, Steve and Joe (who performs in an animal suit as Yolanda The Panda)."

This track comes from Free Swim's latest EP She Dreams In Lights - which tones down the quirky humour in favour of a more substantial dreampop sound. It's resulted in the band being taken far more seriously at radio - with support from Huw Stephens, Steve Lamacq and Jon Hillcock as well as myself. It's currently available to download for free from .

INTRODUCING MIXTAPE. MONDAY 20/08/2012

Post categories: ,听,听,听

Tom Robinson Tom Robinson | 02:00 UK time, Monday, 20 August 2012

These are the listings for Monday, August 20th, starting with my old friends Flipron and special guest Neville Staple (above)

FLIPRON feat. NEVILLE STAPLE - The Comet Returns [starts 0:14]

"We're a Glastonbury based four piece" say Flipron "who play a kind of barrelhouse britpop, or psychedelic honky-tonk. We're musically promiscuous at any rate. We have our 4th album called Firework Shoes coming out in October, (produced by Rat Scabies from The Damned) and this is the first single, featuring Specials legend Neville Staple. It comes out on 10th September! Kind of spaghetti-ska sort of sound鈥" I for one have been a fan of Flipron's skewed and unique West Country take on life and music since long before 主播大秀 Introducing was even dreamed of. In a just world, a band of such long standing - and with a track record as great as theirs - would really need no introducing. But then, as we all know, there's not much justice in the world.

WE ARE ANIMAL - Royal Wolf [starts 4:38]

Wiful musical maverick Owain Ginsberg comes from a musical family in a small village just outside Caernarfon in the foothills of Snowdonia and is both a member of Masters in France and the brother of Caz Ginsberg of . He laid down the first WE//ARE//ANIMAL tracks in a local slate quarry by multitracking himself on a battered 7 track digital recorder but soon assembled a real live gigging and recording lineup. Royal Wolf started out as a mistake when guitarist Dion Hamer accidentally hit a note on his guitar with his delay pedal on - providing us the drone-loop which circulates throughout the entire track. Writing the rest, says Ows, was a piece of cake. For an unerringly inventive (and genuinely edgy) re-imagining of rock'n'roll's long-lost antic spirit, is the band to follow.

POLLY PAULUSMA - Story Of My Life [starts 8:19]

From humble musical beginnings in a garden shed, Polly Paulusma signed to One Little Indian nine years ago and released her self-produced, home-shed-recorded debut album Scissors In My Pocket in 2004. Her second album Fingers & Thumbs in 2007 was a difficult and intensely personal album made in the wake of a series of tragic miscarriages. Five years and two children later, Polly has just released her joyful third album which includes collaborations with Adem and Erin McKeown. To promote it she's been busking the streets of her native London with a sign that reads: "I don't want your money. Just tweet me or like me on

BIG BEAT BRONSON - Action Man [starts 12:20]

It had to happen. Over the past few years - via 主播大秀 Introducing - the North-East's hiphop scene had been gathering momentum spearheaded by the flamboyant presence of Baron Von Alias and and his longtime collaborator MistaBreeze. They've now formed a selfsltyled supergroup with musical partner Eliza Lawson under the name Big Beat Bronson. Their trademark is sharp, knowing Geordie-inflected rap delivered with wry humour and flawless technique over carefully engineered beats. The mysterious Baron sports an outfit so over the top yet so instantly recognisable - with his top hat, trainers, dark glasses and laughably false moustache - you could spot him on stage from the back of a stadium. And who knows, if this track from the new group is anything to go by, maybe one day we will.

EROMNIM3 - 4am In Vegas [starts 16:19]

Eromnim3 are a Scottish musical collective "creating soundscapes" they say "for all dreamers". Based around Frank McDade and John P Boyle they're based in the town of Bellshill - whose rich musical heritage includes Teenage Fan Club, BMX Bandits and The Soup Dragons among others. The collective's goal is to collaborate across the media of music, film, photography and video games in order to help showcase the abundance of talent across the west of Scotland. This stunningly atmospheric track was inspired - as its name implies - by an early morning stroll through the Nevada metropolis, and is part of a suite of tracks written and recorded at Peter Gabriel鈥檚 Real World Studio. Listening to the immaculate clarity and detail of McDade and Boyle's production you can hear that the money spent on studio rental was a wise investment. The 8 track album is called 鈥楻ealscapes鈥 and available in lossless digital quality .

LACES - Lift [starts 21.41]

The artists known Laces may or may not be BP Walker and Patrick Wanzala-Ryan. These gentlemen are former members of a band they describe as "grossly unpopular indie imps The Swing Movement" but whom we rather liked and played four or five times on ny old Fresh On The Net radio shows for 6 Music.
They may or may not have since abandoned the Yorkshire Dales for the less than leafy suburbs of South West London, to pursue their love of Can, Aphex Twin, Tom Waits and Steve Reich.听 However, whoever they are and whatever their aims, they are most certainly laying their hands, by hook or by crook, on every analog delay pedal that has ever been produced with the intention of creating a cacophony of truly unlistenable proportions. Londoners can hear the results for themselves live at Bar Vinyl in Camden on September 17th.

BENIN CITY - Accellerate [starts 23:32]
Named after a Nigerian state capital, Benin City came together when vocalist/lyricist Joshua Idehen met drummer Theo Buckingham at a squat party. They struck up a friendship over a mutual love of DnB and decided to make music together. Theo drafted in trombonist Faye Treacy - whom he'd originally met at The Brit School - and Faye drafted in Tom Leaper, a like-minded saxophonist from The Royal Academy of Music. Their music has been played by John Kennedy, Huey Morgan, Mark Lamarr and Craig Charles and at the start of this year Benin City signed to electronic label AD (Audio Doughnuts). They're currently working on an album.

THE MOUTH OF GHOSTS - When the Sun Sets
[starts 27:02]
This is the effortless, etheral, and frankly gorgeous title track for an EP by THE MOUTH OF GHOSTS called When the Sun Sets which was recently a 'fans-only' release via their website, but is likely to get a full promotional push before long. The band formed in early 2011, are named after a song by Dilinger Escape Plan, and consist of Alla Seydalieva on vocals, Simon Langford on guitar, Marco Italia on bass, Phil Page on drums, and Valerie Deniz on vocals and synth. Seydalieva's soaring, sensuous vocals are听 underpinned by an irreseistible groove and Italia's bassplaying is simply the best I've heard all year - this track was deservedly favourited by readers of my Fresh On The Net blog recently. They have an upcoming gig at the Westbury Festival in Gloucestershire on August 25th. Details and a full, informative biography are available on their excellent website .

MIRRORED - Memoirs [starts 31:20]

Nick Udall - aka rapper Deeflux - has a double musical life as guitarist with Mirrored, a band whose music couldn't be more different from the laidback Slacker Reggae of his hiphop partnership with Louis Unseen. This full-on track Memoirs is pretty much guaranteed to put hairs on your chest and comes from the Mirrored album Diagrams which was released at the beginning of the month. I can tell you the rest of the band consists of vocalist Guy Miller, lead guitarist Dave Johnson, bassist Scott Miller and Aaron "Eggers" Graham on drums, but pretty much nothing else - except that the band was formed by "a group of college friends" in "South UK".听听

PARTY CLUB - Shake [starts 35:31]

Formed late last year herald from what they describe as "the quaint city of York" where they're pioneering their own genre of #indiebounce漏 and inviting listeners along for the ride. And the listeners seem pretty keen to climb aboard: their earlier track Young And free saw them playlisted on Radio 1 in April as Introducing Band Of The Week. They now share management with Dappy, Tinchy, and Dot Rotten among others - and this summer brought them a flurry of live activity - with a mini tour around England plus assorted festival and summer balls at the country's Ancient Universities. Unusually for an ambitious band with friends in high places, PartyClub retain a warm, toasty and down-to-earth charm in both their music and their attitude that bodes well for this canny and likeable bunch.

DUPPY BEATZ - Les Me Guess [starts 38:35]

"Hi i'm Duppy Beatz, a music producer from Bristol, I am 24 years old & have been producing for roughly 7 years. I aim to collaborate with talented artists to make exciting, positive music for the nation to enjoy. I also work as a youth music mentor, developing young talent in Bristol to hopefully get us on the map and show the nation what exciting, positive music we have to offer. Bless鈥" Supported from day one by Sam and Richard from 主播大秀 Introducing In Bristol, Duppy Beatz - together with his collaborator Empror - played the Introducing stage at Wychwood Festival in Cheltenham, the 1Xtra Live tour, and will be appearing on the 主播大秀 Introducing stages at Reading and Leeds this coming weekend.

ARP ATTACK - Amnesty [starts 43:41]

are a band on the fast track whose music has the happy knack of winning friends and allies on first hearing. For instance this song Amnesty was a popular track on my Fresh On The Net blog last week. They have - we're told - shared stages with the likes of Delphic, Chew Lips, Everything Everything and Two Door Cinema Club, and enjoyed unfailing support from 主播大秀 Introducing. They were first spotted performing in Portsmouth by NW Free Music who funded a recording of their debut single "Follow the Rhythm" at Dean Street Studios in London. It was released in April this year and caught the attention of Hype Music - affliated with MTV Networks - who are releasing a new four track EP by the band this Summer. From which - needless to say - Amnesty is taken.

VINCENT BURKE - He Paid To Have Himself Murdered [starts 47:46]

Vince had already been writing songs for years purely for his own enjoyment when last Summer he decided to try some of them out in music bar in Streatham, South London. He was so astonished and gratified by the audience reaction that he's played there nearly every week since then and started doing other floor spots too. He describes the response as genuinely touching - and after much urging by these new-found fans, Vince has finally started . He'll be returning to The White Lion next month to host a night of his own there on Saturday September 22nd.

SOOTYTERN - Get It Sorted [starts 49:43]

Sootytern describe themselves as "a four piece folky band who strum-pluck-plod-thump their way through slices of whimsical, touching and the-good-kind-of-twee songs. Melting a bricolage of influences from British Sea Power鈥檚 Albion eccentricity to Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel鈥檚 open heart - Sootytern are an eiderdown for the ears: warm and comforting." This track comes from their debut 3-track EP Ornithological Physics, which was digitally released in March via Bandcamp but is now finally available in physical form. These will be available online soon, but currently the best way to get a hold of a copy is by coming to one of their gigs. I not only love this song but also love the fact that the band list their fascinating variety of day jobs on their official biog: "Ewan (Drums) - Pharmacology Researcher. Adam (Mandolin, Accordion, Glock, Vocals etc) - Accountant. Jayson (Ukelele, Lead Vocals) - Computer Science Researcher. Peet (Bass, Vocals) - Italian Chef." They're currently recording a new EP entitled 鈥淲ho Does Not Know The Famous Swan鈥 - loosely based on their love for the Lake District - and named after a quote from William Wordsworth.

MINIATURE CITIES - On My Feet (Breathing Aid) [starts 53:05]

Miniature Cities began as a producing duo formed by Joe Barnby and Daniel Hernandez who met while working in a central London bar, and gradually evolved to incorporate more live sounds and instruments into their songs. They were sunsequently joined by bassist Alex McDowell (a former bandmate of Dans) to complete the trio, who named themselves in tribute to the psychologist Carl Jungs who actually built miniature cities in order "to break out of the confines of his conscious personality and find a new source of life." The band are based in London and will be releasing a debut EP later this year.

HYPE KRONIK - Don't Bother Lie [starts 56:24]

Don't Bother Lie is the sharp and hilarious second single from HYPE KRONIK - the followup to his debut single Dutty Weekend which we played last November. Hype is a 22 year old MC based near MILTON KEYNES who has a that tells us his favourite quotation is "1.....4.......1" and that he is in a relationship with Hype Kronik. But not much else. Sorry to keep on about this, but - artists - if you don't provide any information on your web pages, or when sending your music to 主播大秀 Introducing, then we can't tell our listeners anything about you either.

INTRODUCING MIXTAPE. MONDAY 13/08/2012

Post categories: ,听,听,听

Tom Robinson Tom Robinson | 02:00 UK time, Monday, 13 August 2012

In the small hours of a Monday morning from 2-3am you can hear a selection of my favourite new tunes compiled into an hour-long mixtape of nonstop music. All the audio is sourced from the 主播大秀 Introducing Uploader - some of it recommended by friends and colleagues and some discovered via Twitter and my own Fresh On The Net blog.

All the tracklists and start times for each track are published here - together with a link to each artist's website. These are the listings for Monday, August 13th.

SONS BETWEEN GUNS 鈥 Calling On The Rain [Starts 0:14]

鈥淲e are鈥 say Sons Between Guns in South East London 鈥淧aul Trivett and Thomas Whitelaw. We are both into a ridiculous amount of different types of music but we manage to fuze this all together to make a fresh and original sound鈥 We write produce and mix all of our material, perform live and are signed To R-Lo Records.鈥 This is the first track the band ever recorded and the second we鈥檝e featured from the label鈥檚 debut release, EP Red 1. A followup EP of remixes came out earlier in the Summer and Sons Between Guns will shortly be preparing for a new set of live dates across London and the U.K.

EVOKATEUR 鈥 White Horses [Starts 4:18]

To declare an interest, I鈥檝e been supporting the Anglo-Mexican duo of Hector and Sarah Villaraus since July 2008 back when they were known as Libelula. Based in London, they鈥檝e flourished under the name of 鈥 a cross perhaps between the French 鈥減rovocateur鈥 (as in agent provocateur) and 鈥渆vocative鈥. It was gratifying to find that readers of my Fresh On The Net blog liked this track White Horses enough to rate them among our Fresh Faves last week. It comes from their second EP Chime Hours 鈥 due for release on Augus 20th 鈥 the second in a trilogy they鈥檙e putting out this year. Hector鈥檚 arrangements and Sarah vocals manage to sound simultaneously tough and lush on this 鈥 their most assured release to date.

WHALES IN CUBICLES 鈥 Nowhere Flag [Starts 8:51]

What can I tell you about Whales In Cubicles ? Well, although there鈥檚 no biog on their website, Soundcloud or Facebook luckily they did supply a small amount of information when uploading this outstanding track to 主播大秀 Introducing. 鈥淪tef Bernadi (sings, guitar), Leo Weston (drums), Jamie Powell (bass), Alex Pyper (guitar, keys). This is their second single released last week on the indie label Popular Recordings.鈥 Oh and their website lists some at the end of September.

LILLIPUT 鈥 Little Wanderer [Starts 12:17]

There must be some magic mineral in the Tyne and Wear water supply. The area produces a constant succession of new and wonderful bands 鈥 plus musicianship of an unvaryingly high standard. Sunderland five-piece Lilliput are the latest bearers of that standard to come our way 鈥 with a beautifully produced tune that seems to have grown organically from the acoustic guitar and vocals of frontman James Gilling. Keep a careful eye on this mob. Just like local superstars Athletes In Paris and The Lake Poets, Lilliput have all their musical ducks in a row and are perhaps just one killer single away from a major breakthrough: it鈥檚 now simply down to . They鈥檙e playing Newcastle鈥檚 Cluny 2 on August 24th, a London gig at the Strongroom Sessions on the 29th and 鈥 no surprises here 鈥 Sunderland鈥檚 own Split festival on September 22nd. Full details at

DEAN ATTA 鈥 Mother Tongue [Starts 18:12]

London poet Dean Atta (pictured above) is man on a mission 鈥 whose powerful reflections on race, identity and sexuality make him one of the most outspoken social commentators of his musical generation. He was a deserving winner of the 鈥楲ondon Poetry Award鈥 at the 2012 London Awards for Art and Performance and has performed at venues ranging from the Roundhouse to the Houses of Parliament, and at festivals of every stripe. Less well-known, but even more remarkable, are his talks, workshops and educational work with young people. If you enjoy this powerful piece about family, language and roots on our mixtape, then I鈥檇 urge you to download the whole of his new EP 鈥 sensitively and beautifully produced and mixed by . Dean Atta 鈥 remember the name. You鈥檒l be hearing it a lot more in the months and years to come.

MINOR SOUNDS 鈥 The Humming [Starts 22:27]

This electrifying tune is the result of an international collaboration between vocalist and songwriter Mirna Stanich in Brighton and producer Martin Zietek in Warsaw. They鈥檝e drawn influences 鈥 according to 鈥 from their diverse experiences including 鈥渞oots in Croatia and Poland, and living in the States and the UK.鈥 It鈥檚 always a joy to discover music on the 主播大秀 Introducing Uploader that doesn鈥檛 sound quite like anything else you鈥檝e ever heard. If CDs of this song arrived on producers鈥 desks at 6 Music with stickers proclaiming it to be the new single from Cat Power, Feist or Regina Spektor, it would be all over the airwaves in no time. We DJs meanwhile would be blethering about a 鈥渕ajor new direction鈥 or a 鈥渟tunning return to form鈥 or some such nonsense. It鈥檚 worth downloading this week鈥檚 Mixtape for this track alone.

MYLITTLEBROTHER 鈥 NoseDive [Starts 26:20]

Nosedive is the title track of a free download EP by 鈥 a group of people who liked music and got together in a practice room to drink gin, eat haribo, and start writing together. The songs were recorded at home and at Hanking鈥檚 Rehearsal Room in Carlisle. On the one hand you couldn鈥檛 say there was anything remotely modern about this song 鈥 stylistically it draws on exactly the same traditions as Mahoney And The Moment. On the other hand, in the last 10 years major US artists like Iron & Wine, Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear have managed to transcend their influences to create a fresh strand of country/roots music that is all their own. In their own unassuming way this modest North Country combo have pulled off something similar. Without attempting to reinvent the wheel their writing, playing, singing and production are delivered with such integrity 鈥 and such quiet, understated conviction 鈥 that they sound effortlessly contemporary. Another worthy contender for this week鈥檚 Mixtape.

HANNAH SCOTT 鈥 Only Way Out [Starts 28:41]

The sound of a professional musician who鈥檚 paid her dues, done the groundwork and is now poised for a serious assault on the Radio 2 playlist. I鈥檝e been long aware of 鈥榮 talent, having worked with her on a songwriting retreat in 2008 and heard her perform as a finalist in last year鈥檚 Mojo New Voice competition. Hannah has kept her powder dry and is finally releasing this song Only Way Out 鈥 produced with top musicians in a hilltop studio in Italy 鈥 as her debut single. It comes from a new EP called Still Static, due to be launched in London at the Camden Barfly this Thursday (August 9th) and followed by a European tour. Sooner or later Hannah鈥檚 combination of talent, charm and determination is certain to her the breakthrough she鈥檚 seeking 鈥 and as far as I鈥檓 concerned it can鈥檛 happen soon enough.

BIRD 鈥 Shadows [Starts 32:26]

There have been lineup changes with our friends Bird up there in Liverpool, but their new sound as a three piece is more distinctive than ever - featuring frontwoman Adele Emmas plus guitarist Sian Williams and Alexis Samata on drums. Dave Monks from legendary radio show The Pool (now more prosaically renamed 主播大秀 Introduicng In Merseyside) remains a longstanding supporter of the band. They put out their first EP Phantoms on Jack To Phono last November of 2011 and Shadows is the title track of their followup EP released this month. And on a personal note, meeting them at Abbey Road was one of my highlights from the 主播大秀 Introducing Masterclass in January of this year.

FEEL MY METHOD 鈥 Now Looks Like Then [Starts 35:38]

Feel My Method doesn鈥檛 even deign to HAVE a website, still less any kind of online biog. Luckily Al Mobbs provided some background in his review of this track for Fresh On The Net: 鈥淐hazegee 鈥 aka Feel My Method is basically a complete genius who can鈥檛 hold it together for long enough to make anything of his music 鈥 probably how a proper, old fashioned rock star should be. Last time I saw him live, he was attired in a see through plastic shirt, some chaps and if memory serves me right a jock strap. His music, recorded in a house with no amenities in Slovakia, is a mixture of old school soul and blues vocals slapped on top of hip hop beats and often accompanied by outrageous videos. The vid for this song (by Wallace Wainhouse) is actually quite artistic but some earlier numbers including Dirty Disco are just plain bonkers (and not for Granny). Oh and who the hell does field performances accompanied by an AK47?鈥

REMIMILES 鈥 Perfection (Yolo) [Starts 38:34]

Oh blimey, not gain. Look, artists, its as simple as this. However great your track is (and this one鈥檚 very fine indeed) if you don鈥檛 tell us anything yourself then we can鈥檛 tell our listeners anything about you.

JKLMNO 鈥 Before I Wash Away (Acoustic) [Starts 41:55]

Named after a random row of letters in the alphabet, JKLMNO was formed in Wrexham by friends Carl Harrison, Daniel Pierce, Daniel Kehlenbeck, Elliot Knox and Nick Roberts. Their first EP was in 2007, their second drew support from 主播大秀 Wales and 主播大秀 Shropshire鈥檚 Introducing show The Friday Night Gerbil. In 2008 they were selected to play Benicassim 2008 alongside the likes of Morrissey and Sigur Ros. They鈥檝e since played the 主播大秀 Introducing stage at T in the Park. Before I Wash Away is a bonus acoustic track accompanying the Double AA single released in April via their Bandcamp to preview their forthcoming debut album. From which we heard Where Sorrow Lays earlier in the year

FUZZY EMPIRE 鈥 Chroma [Starts 44:57]

Continuing the theme of immaculately-produced electropop, consist of Irishman Emmet (a rocker) and Englishman Tim (a raver). They met in 2009 while on the same sound engineering course in Dublin and formed a duo in late 2010. Hil, a frequent collaborator on bass and guitar, subsequently joined the band full-time in late 2011. 鈥 We don鈥檛 know鈥 they say 鈥渋f we鈥檙e an electronic band writing live rock music or a traditional band with lots of modern toys, but that doesn鈥檛 really matter. All that counts for us is The Song.鈥 The writing on Chroma is certainly forthright and strong but, as you might expect from Tim and Emmet鈥檚 background, the arrangement is creatively adventurous while the recording itself positively leaps out of the speakers.

DEBS McCOY 鈥 Nightingale [Starts 48:27]

Warm and engaging music from an exceptional musician and visual artist, who has no problem writing a thumbnail biography. The result is both fascinating and painfully honest. 鈥淧layed in bands with my brother Jay McCoy and Carl Stafford who played in Elia Drew, KT Tunstall鈥檚 former band. Also played with Sean Harrington from Mishaped Pearls and Pill Box. Background in Fine Art/art education. Worked as an Art Psychotherapist in the NHS for the past 6 years, resigned from job 鈥 awful court/tribunal case (that I won) relating to my Dyslexia 鈥 the stress anxiety and isolation from it all propelled me back into music.鈥 I recommend checking out for more of that music and to check out some of the oustanding visual images in her gallery.

A SEA WITH 3 STARS 鈥 24th & Mission [Starts 52:05]

is the musical project of London-based actor and folk-rock musician RICHARD INGS 鈥 and this track comes from his debut album For Nothing which tells the story of 鈥渉ow powerful an enemy hope can be.鈥 He names Lloyd Cole and The The as seminal influences from his teens, while this song offers a cheery naive energy that would do justice to The Modern Lovers and the kind of motoring backbeat you鈥檇 expect from the Happy Mondays. The object of our Listening Post each weekend is to allow artists to find out if their music wins the hearts of strangers. 24th And Mission did that in spades this weekend: the fact it was such a big favourite with readers bodes well for in the future. Onwards and upwards.

THE CREEPING IVIES 鈥 Chicken Voodoo Blues [Starts 55:08]

It was regular 6 Music listener and walking musical encyclopedia JP Cooling who tipped me off about this pair of miscreaants. Ever since The Cramps propelled Lux Interior and Poison Ivy to global stardom, any psychobilly band worth its salt has to be based around a talented male/female duo with daft names. It's the law. In this case we have Becca Bomb (who 鈥済rinds the guitar鈥) and Duncan Destruction (who 鈥渂eats the pans鈥). Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Dundee鈥檚 finest: The Creeping Ivies, purveyor鈥檚 of wild 鈥 and frankly irresistible 鈥 garage rock n roll. They've just released their debut 3 track EP called 鈥 what else 鈥 Rock N Roll Party.

MAHONEY & THE MOMENT 鈥 If You Only Asked Me To [Starts 57:35]

Steve Mahoney and Emily Moment are from London and Massachussets respectively and first formed their musical partnership at the start of last year in New York City. They released their selftitled debut album in September 2011 and are currently based in Harrow. Their brand of traditional upbeat jugband folk has won them fans on both sides of the Atlantic and indeed here on our Listening Post this weekend. Their next few dates are in London 鈥 at the Stag, Hampstead on August 19th, Notting Hill Arts Club on September 4th and The Albion on the 16th. More details on and via
