Hope And Social - photographed by Bart Pettman
Hope And Social - photographed by Bart Pettman

In the small hours of a Monday morning from 2-3am you can hear a selection of my favourite new tunes compiled into an hour-long mixtape of nonstop music. All the audio is sourced from the 主播大秀 Introducing Uploader - some of it recommended by friends and colleagues and some discovered via Twitter and my own Fresh On The Net blog.

From 3am each Monday the latest mixtape is available free via the 6 Music Downloads Page - where you'll also find archived episodes from the previous 4 weeks. All the tracklists and start times for each track are published here - together with a link to each artist's website.

In addition, every Wednesday the mixtape is published on the and added to this page midweek - along with more info about each of the artists. These are the listings for Monday, 29th October 2012

HOPE & SOCIAL - Back to the Green [starts 00:13]

There are so many old friends of my 6 Music Introducing shows from over the years in this mixtape - and first up we have those movers and shakers of West Yorkshire indie music scene Hope and Social. Who, I was astonished to learn, only formed听 in 2007. Since then, they have released 7 records - all on the basis of their pay-what-you-can philosophy that is so typical of their wonderfully all-embracing musical inclusiveness. The only band I have ever known to invite their fans to dinner in a church vault and turn the results in a track on their next album. This particular song comes from Sleep Sound and their next gig is at Hereford Corn Exchange on November 12th.

OLLIE TAYLOR - Remember This [starts 04:02]

I've long been a fan of Ollie Taylor's work as the human groove machine behind longstanding favourites The October Game, and it's great to discover his further gifts as a singer and songwriter on this track, which could easily be a long-lost outtake from a classic Thomas Dolby record. It's taken from his 11-track debut solo album Little Drummer Boy, which was released last month and features a soulful-looking Ollie on the front cover and a winduo toy soldier on the back. Warmly recommended.

IZZI DUNN - Picture of You [starts 07:51]

Cellist, singer and multi-instrumentalist Izzi Dunn returns with her selfproduced sophomore album 鈥楥ries and Smiles鈥. Following her acclaimed debut album 鈥楾he Big Picture鈥 a mutual friend recommended her services as an arranger to Damon Albarn, who persauded her in 2005 to form her all-female quartet Demon Strings - who ubsequently played on the Gorillaz world tour.听 Izzi spent a further nine months on the road as part of Mark Ronson's all-star revue and has also spent a spell with Damon's supergroup The Good, The Bad and The Queen.

BEAR CAVALRY - The Word 'Canoe' [starts 10:23]

Another band who'll be familiar to longstanding listenersof my Introducing shows on 6 Music, Gosport's Bear Cavalry combine intricate rhythms, African chants, trumpets, falsetto vocals and electro synths the band are difficult to tie to any one genre. Despite a wide range of musical influences they aim to imbue their songs with accessible hooks and pop sensibilities. The Word 'Canoe' comes from their forthcoming Puryss EP, due out on Bonfire Night, November 5th.

ZAHEER - Assemble [starts 13:36]

Yet another regular frequently featured on my radio shows, Zaheer is a young independent musician and producer based in Milton Keynes who was first introduced to us by Asian Network's Bobby Friction. It's been a delight hearing his work grow in daring and assurance over the past couple of years. His recent collaboration with Swami Baracus won the latter a slot at T In The Park this year while the record itself听 made it onto the on Radio 1 playlist. This track marks a further shift of gear as Zaheer steps forward into the spotlight as a recording artist in his own right, with a stellar cast of young hungry MC talent from the UK. The sharpest single Zaheer has made to date, by some margin, this augurs well for his forthcoming album sue in 2013.

HOWL GRIFF - Fragile Diamond [starts 17:15]

Hywel Griffiths is a musician and beekeeper from Aberystwyth, West Wales. "I've been around two things all my life," he says, "bees and music. I've been stung so many times, that my blood tests show enough venom to kill a normal person. I guess you just get used to it." Together with fellow member Gary Parkinson, Nick Moore and Steve Kennedy, he fronts Lauren Laverne favourites and Welsh indie legends Howl Griff. This is the title track from their debut album, released on October 15th - and for upcoming gigs check their comprehensive website and follow them .

ALEX HIGHTON - Stupid [starts 20:30]

After growing up in Liverpool, and then spending a decade in London, Alex Highton decamped with his family to rural Cambridgeshire. What he found was an England he didn't know existed and a life he didn't know he was looking for. With no expectations at all he wrote and recorded a bunch of songs that chronicled his journey from the city to the country. Just stuff about what was going on around him, his wife, his kids, breathing in the fresh air and staring into the abyss. The result is his debut album, Woodditton Wives Club, from which we've already played several tracks on 6 Music Introducing.

DANNI NICHOLLS - Warm Your Hands [starts 23:35]

I recently had the pleasure of working with Danni Nicholls on an immersion songwriting weekend and in December, she'll be recording her debut album in Nashville with producer Chris Donohue (Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Robert Plant). This has been entirely funded with the support of friends and fans and the best news of this week is that the project has just achieved 99% of its target - which means the album will now go ahead with a release date of Spring 2013. This song meanwhile comes from Danni's recent 4 track EP Time.

SHINY RHINO - Your Band [starts 26:38]

Mike Cornes aka Shiny Rhino describes himself as a "spare-time bedroom songwriter and software musician experimenting with sounds and trying to improve skills." Music is his first love but Rugby League is his听 latest - he's a fan, hence the Shiny Rhino name. Cars, gadgets, design, books and film are other interests along with the internet - "it's amazing what you can find..." he says. His hilariously sardonic lofi gem Your Band was released in August and is available digitally from Mike's .

RICKY RUSSELL - Occupy (The World Outside) [starts 30:22]

Ricky Russell is a London songwriter and producer with an instinct for debate. He runs a recording studio and engineers every aspect of his music. For this song, Ricky used soundbites from footage he recorded at the Occupy movement in London. With an accompanying YouTube video featuring protests from around the world, he says 鈥極ccupy (The World Outside)鈥 presents a voice for people across the globe who stand and fight against perceived injustice.

IVOR GAME - You're The One [starts 34:01]

Ivor Game is singer/songwriter from London who's been playing since he was 10, and appeared in a variety of bands through his teens. It was in his twenties that he found his feet, playing solo in the acoustic clubs of London. In recent years, he has also performed in Los Angeles, Nashville, parts of Europe and Ireland. His latest album Freckles was released this summer, and he recently secured a licensing deal with MPL. You can hear short snippets of several of Ivor's songs on - including the lead single Happy New Year - which was also featured last week in the prestigious series.

EMERGENCY DOOR RELEASE - Tonight [starts 36:14]

Another band who sound so assured you'd never guess they were formed just over half a year ago. Newcastle's Emergency Door Release already have a successful debut EP (Who Are We) - plus a tour of the northern UK - under their collective belts. This was my favourite track from their followup Bowties & Butterflies - and they have further live dates to support it starting at The Punchbowl in Jesmond a week on Friday (November 9th)听 followed by Woodstock Wellwood in Dumfermline the following night.

HURACHE - Um A Beast [starts 40:01]

From a sleepy fishing port in the South West of England comes an Urbane Music Collective founded in 2001 by brothers Mike and Dan Hall, both born and raised in Brixham ( "...and yes" they add "we say said Urbane not Urban. It鈥檚 not a typo.") Hurache is - they tell us - definitely a collective rather than a "group" or a "crew". They've been making a name by selling limited edition copies of CDs directly to the public in their local area while diligently practising and honing their production skills. This track comes from their 19-track debut album Digital Revolution - made and marketed defiantly outside "the Record Label establishment"...

CATSFORPERU - Three Brothers [starts 43:56]

cats:for:peru are a band from Sheffield, who began their trade early 2007 when Ad Follett asked his mates from the sleepy suburb of Dronfield to join him. After a flurry of well received gigs, the band headed to 2fly studios where, with the help of legendary local producers David Sanderson & Alan Smyth (Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, Long Blondes), they produced debut album Attack Of The Pitching Machine. They have since supported Wild Beasts, Colourmusic, Juffage, The Heartbreaks and Here We Go Magic. After a quiet first half of 2012, the Cats released this double A-side single through House vs 主播大秀 Records.

DOUBLETHUMB - I'm Not Your Dog [starts 47:28]

We first played Double Thumb (aka singer/songwriter/producer Val Del Prete) back in August 2008 and I've followed her musical explorations with considerable interest ever since. Val taught herself how to play the piano at 3 years of age, and wrote her first song at 6. In 2004, 2 years after she relocated to London from her native Italy, Val started making music. Double Thumb's first album was released in March 2011 to excellent reviews. Several tracks have already been played here and on XFM, as well as other independent radios in Germany and in the US.

VENUSIAN PLOW - Hanging in the Playground [starts 50:09]

Venusian Plow are a trio from Leeds who recorded their first album this year, from which Hanging In The Playground is taken. The band's music is a mix of alternative/experimental pop, or as they like to call it, inverted prog! Their music references bands such as The Teardrop Explodes, Talking Heads and PiL.

WEIRD RIBS - Lost [starts 53:27]

Weird Ribs is the synthwave/kosmische project of Hull denizen Jospeh Cox, whose most recent album was Frontiers in march and is currently available from his Bandcamp. Soundwise, he describes his work as psychedelic progressive electronics - aiming for the feel of a soundtrack to science fiction movie.听This is one of his very latest unreleased tracks that, says Joseph, "have kinda defined where I'm heading musically. Previously most of my music had a somewhat ambient nature. Although still very much fitting into the library music/music for films category this track very much takes a more rhythmic noisy and perhaps aggressive approach that's becoming much more common in what I do."

Unquiet Nights are centered on the songs of frontman Luke Mathers, the drumming of Rodger Firmin, and the Precision bass of John Rossi. But - they stress - over and above everything, it's always been and always will be about the songs. I couldn't agree more. Someone's Love on Drugs comes from their fine debut album 21st Century Redemption Songs - for which recording started in their native Belfast and was completed in their adopted home of Umbria, Northern Italy. It's available in both digital and physical formats from - priase be - 听 where you can not only hear what you're getting before you buy, but download it in lossless quality once you do.

THIS IS ETHMO - The Exorcist [starts 12:04]

A depressing percentage of the artists we include in this mixtape each week provide no factual information about themselves whatever, with the "About" or "Biog" section glaringly missing from their band website or Facebook oage. This outfit at least give us 12 words on their Soundcloud page: "Death Metal meets World Music: This Is Ethmo St Albans 3 piece." On the other hand every artist, however long-established, has a right for their latest music to be judged anonymously on its own merits: free from any baggage or preconceptions. I daresay all will become clear soon enough.

SUSIE WILKINS - Wasted Time [starts 14:20]

Susie Wilkins toured Europe supporting Joe Jackson in 2008. Her material subsequently caught the ear of Sheryl Crow's writing partner Jeff Trott, who put her in touch with Crow's drummer Jeremy Stacey. Stacey & Suzanne Vega's bassist Mike Visceglia played on Susie's self recorded/self produced album, which has been mixed by Ryan Freeland and is out now: available to hear on Spotify and buy on iTunes.

SWAMI BARACUS - Hyper [starts 18:45]

This is the brand new single from friend of the show Swami ("Barracuda") Baracus. His superb recent collabration with producer Zaheer - "The Recipe" - earned him a place not only on the 主播大秀 Introducing stage at T In The Park but also the Radio 1 Playlist. It's also the title track of his latest mixtape. Barracuda's genre-defying style has earned him multiple awards and nominations and made him outight winner at the Asian 8-Mile MC Battle contest in London. Swami Baracus is part of a stellar UK rap lineup to be featured on the next single from Zaheer - alongside the likes of Abiade, Rukus, Mr ShaoDow and the mighty Genesis Elijah.

ALFIE ORDINARY - Wheetabix Song [starts 22:26]

(See photo above) "I'm Alfie and I write songs. I have mixture of influences, from The Beatles to Lady Sovereign, but my main aim is to be true to myself using the everyday as my palette: I'd feel silly singing a song with words I wouldn't usually say. What are you doing on November the 12th? I'm playing in Brighton at Sticky Mike's Frog Bar with Robbie Bushell and The Nigel Passey Band. It would be lovely to see you."

GOY BOY MCILROY - The Pilgrim [starts 25:17]

Goy Boy McIlroy are an alt blues band from the small Quaker market town of Darlington in the Northeast of England - which they describe as "a void of hope and filled with apathy and closed mindedness. It is from that bleak social landscape that we draw our inspiration." This track The Pilgrim - together with their song Black Glove - was released as a digital Double-A single at the end of last month, and they've just been named as Band Of The Day by Louder Than War.

HOLLY AND THE WOLF - Holding Me Back [starts 28:50]

We first featured Holly Dearden on 6 Music Introducing in 2008, when she released her debut solo album The Optimist鈥檚 Daughter through friends of the show Ambiguous Records. Not long after this, she met double bassist Alex Karban and drummer Robbie Jarvis, who became and remain the backbone of a new band who have slowly but surely evolved into Holly and the Wolf. Fresh out of the recording studio and currently playing a series of residency shows upstairs at Ronnie Scott鈥檚 in their native London, the band have just released a brand new video for this single, and launch it with a hometown gig at The Lucky Pig Cocktail Bar a week on Wednesday, October 17th.

AUDIO PORNOGRAPHY - Becoming Winston Smith [starts 30:58]

John Pratt in Shipley has playe about with sound - and manipulated it - under the name of audioPORNOGRAPHY since circa 2010. John has, he says, struggled for a long, long while to form a consistent sonic identity for the project, but believes he has finally found it. He's also been involved in the mixing and mastering process for his friend Stuart Thomas aka Mountain Range - whom he warmly recommends at . But John is also on the active lookout for both gigs and potential collaborations. Any offers considered!

THE PAPER SHADES - Where You Lay [starts 37:11]

Sarah Dollar and Jon Rixon are, they tell us, a male/female duo from the South - specifically between Basingstoke & Newbury. They've known each other for ten years but only formed the band three years ago once they had started writing their own material. Where You Lay is the title track of their newly selfreleased second EP. This talented and personable duo are currently busy drinking tea and working on new songs so as to be ready to hit the studio again next month.

THE HUMANITARIANS - Weatherman [starts 40:18]

Devon's The Humanitarians consist of John (who plays guitar and sings) Hayden (who pummels drums), Geoff (who plays bass) and Rich (who plays guitar and - yes - trombone). Their debut Born was released physically and digitally in 2010 and the followup, No Law, is already recorded, mastered and due for release shortly. The first taster is their new single "Call The Police" - from which this track Weatherman is the B-side - and available on iTunes, Spotify, etc. They play The Grapevine in Exmouth on October 26th.

ABSORB feat. Lady Chann - I'm Done [starts 43:33]

ABSORB is a 27 year old rapper from County Durham. Having been influenced by UK Garage Music, he started writing lyrics to UKG instrumentals in the early 2000's. His first grime EP That Was Then, This Is Now in 2007,听 was followed by 2008's The Blah EP with the Newcastle-based producer Sequel. In 2009 the pair released their joint single Play The Game which we featured heavily at the time - their joint page is at https://absorbvssequel.com. These days Absorb is a member of the mighty - while as a solo artist he likes to vocal over "instrumentals across a ranges of styles, specifically grime and dubstep. Although anything with a mean bassline that catches my ear will definitely prompt me to reach for a pen and a pad".

INTERVALS - Water [starts 46:38]

Band biog of the week comes from a blacked out rehearsal room in Camden and bears repeating in full:

"We are Intervals, a 4-piece alternative indie band from London. We release our debut single Water on 14th October 2012. It sounds a bit like Radiohead meets Wild Beasts. We first decided to form a band 11 years ago in Oxford. We rehearsed in a room without windows back then. Not out of choice. We used to be called The Black Sand, playing meandering rock songs with Big Muff pedals and a very loud snare drum but have spent the last six months writing songs in Camden, in another room without windows. It can't be good for you. We decided upon a new name to mark our adventures in a new musical direction, and even designed a logo. It didn't take long, it's a very simple logo. We've got 2 singles planned for this year and an EP in early 2013. We hope you like them."

And that, my friends, is an exemplary demonstration of how to write a funny, factual - and above all interesting - artist biography. Look and learn.

AL CHAMBERLAIN - Train Song [starts 50:17]

Al Chamberlain learned the musical ropes back in the 80s and 90s while stuck to the carpets of some of the least gracious pubs Bolton and Hull had to offer. He now inhabits the South Coast of England - where he gets most of his creative ideas from listening to a housebound nonagenarian. Something he suggests that all aspiring songwriters ought to do a great deal more of. You can enjoy more of Al's听 poised vocals, understated production, immaculate guitar technique and eloquent songwriting on Soundcloud.

LAURENCE MADE ME CRY - Intelligent Mister Toad (feat. DEMENTIO13) [starts 54:16]

The artist behind LMMC is multi-instrumentalist Jo Whitby, a West Country girl who's now making roots in the Welsh capital Cardiff. Having spent many years immersed in the Bristol music scene, it wasn鈥檛 until her move to Wales that Jo found the confidence to truly set her own music free. "I鈥檝e always been pushed to either be an artist or a musician" she says and Laurence Made Me Cry is a way to combine everything I love doing as one project and not feel guilty about it." Rather than a band, the project incorporates music, art, animation, poetry and storytelling. "There's such a positive attitude to music in Cardiff" says Jo. "You don't feel judged and people are willing to get involved and help you out. I like that".

INTRODUCING MIXTAPE. MONDAY 01/10/2012

Post categories: ,听,听,听

Tom Robinson Tom Robinson | 02:00 UK time, Monday, 1 October 2012

These are the listings for Monday, October 1st. Pictured above:

PANIC SOCIAL - Too Much TV [starts 00:14]

Panic Social was born entirely through the internet and started with a cheeky "fancy writing together?" tweet from Amy Daniels to Anthony Grantham. They aim to create a mix of electronica, British guitar stylings, and harmony vocal lines. To date their music has already been played on several radio stations. Despite living in the same country and being in the same band Amy & Anthony have never met.

HARRY KEYWORTH - Flux [starts 03:27]

Virtuoso slap guitar tecnique, effortless songwriting, smooth falsetto vocals and warm rich production - what's not to like about songwriter, composer and session musician Harry Keyworth. He mainly plays de-tuned acoustic guitar, piano, percussion and bass instruments. This is the title track of his debut EP, released in March. He plays Brighton this Friday October 5th, followed by live dates in Cardiff, London and Bournemouth this Autumn.

FIFTEEN DAYS - Nothin鈥 More
[starts 08:32]

Brentford's Fifteen Days released the 5 track debut EP "These Ghosts" back in May from which this gentle understated track is taken. It was recorded in London with guitar and vocals by frontman Darren Plant, accompanied by Oscar Cainer on bass and banjo, Karl Penney on drums, Lucy Railton on cello and Courtenay Purcell on piano. I'd like to tell you more about Darren and his work, or direct you to his online biog for more information. But I'm afraid that's it.

FROM FORESTS - Tropical [starts 11:31]

Guildford five-piece From Forests formed last year and feature Casper Hughes (vocals and guitar), Douglas Pulman (bass and piano), Charlie Simmons (drums and percussion), Nick Blyth (vocals and guitar) and me, Daniel Woods (Lead Guitar). In June their self-titled EP sold out of handmade physical copies on it day of release. What else can I tell you after reading their online biog? Nothing.

FITZ - Caves [starts 16:55]

This is the title track of the debut EP/single by Fitz - aka writer and producer Sam Fitzpatrick in Shipley. In addition to featuring on our latest 主播大秀 Introducing Mixtape, Caves is currently available as a free download from Fitz's own website. The official release is set for Monday October 15th - in the runup to which Sam is currently out on the road with a band of friends. They play Nottingham on Tuesday, Manchester on Thursday and London on Friday - all dates listed on his Facebook page - where by the time you read this the brand new video for this single should have been unveiled. That's the way to do it!

LIAM BURKE - Down To Danny's [starts 21:22]

I heard Down To Danny鈥檚 by Bedford artist Liam Burke on my Fresh On The Net inbox last week and as soon as the vocal came in with 鈥淲ake up in the morning with a headful of last night鈥 I clicked the 鈥渇avourite鈥 button. The energy of Liam's performance clearly draws on the same folk-punk traditions I remember from Joe Strummer and The Pogues, which in my book is no bad thing. OK, it's still rough around the edges and sounds like quite early days - but early days, I'd say, in a promising career. This track comes from his forthcoming three track EP Sons Of Liberty which can be previewed on his Soundcloud page

WOODMAN STONE - Someone鈥檚 Ideal [starts 24:25]

Leicester's Woodman Stone is both a man and a band. Their online description is devoid of hard biographical facts, and yet so infinitely more interesting to read than "Biography: we play music. Description: Alternative/Ambient" that I make no apology for sharing it with you in full:
"The name came in a dream in which our hero fought for liberation in the garden of his childhood against an occupying army. There were tunnels and woodland hideouts and the name of Woodman Stone was renowned through the countryside as the leader of the resistance. He fought against tyranny and evil, seeking to restore freedom to the humble denizens of the English countryside. It was one of those dreams that seem to occur in real time, lasting for days and weeks eventually he woke with the smell of damp earth in his nostrils, looking over his shoulder, brushing last autumn's leaves from his hair. The dream then faded into the recesses of his memory for many years. In 2010 Woodman returned to music after a lengthy absense and started recording an album he had no name for the project until he woke one day in the summer of 2010, recalled the dream and realised that the name he had been searching for had been there all along, simply waiting to be rediscovered." Woodman Stone emerged from the forests of memory to record the debut album Someone Else's Dreams Will Fill Our 主播大秀. Due out in early 2013 the record can already be previewed on their Soundcloud page and aims to mix sounds from "a Yesterday That Never Was and a Tomorrow We Will Never See: English pop in all its finery."

NADINE CARINA - Paradise
[starts 26:07]

This is right up my street. Nadine Carina is an experimental folk singer/songwriter - half Italian, half Croatian - and born in Switzerland. Writing songs with her guitar, a piano and weird instruments via her MIDI Keyboard, she self-released 3 homemade EPs before moving to England. There she gave birth to her first album Magic Box which was was released by Stattmusik Records in September last year. Currently studying at LIPA in Liverpool, she has just put out her 5th release - a 7 track EP called "Little Bits". Recorded by herself in her bedroom. it's available as a free download from her Bandcamp and will be followed by a new video and followup album before long. A prolific and gifted artist, Nadine Carina is definitely One To Watch in 2013.

CALMASTHECOLOUR - Velvet Sunburst [starts 28:37]

Calmasthecolour are a 4 piece from that Scottish musical mecca, The Kingdom of Fife - home to King Creosote's legendary Fence Collective. Since forming in January 2011 they've been gigging up and down the country loyally promoting their music. This track was released as a single at the end of last year as a followup to their debut release the Ticket To Liberty EP, featured on 6 music Introducing at the time. Their band interests include "Dominoes, reading the thesauras until it reads us, throwing away old shoes and then feeling a terrible sense of loss. Procuring various and sundry items." If you like this track check out their latest EP Tomorrow Belongs to a World Apart from which they've just released a brand new music video for the track Sometimes.

CRUSHING BLOWS - The People You Will Never Meet
[starts 31:28]

We first came across Crushing Blows in 2010 when Steve Lamacq introduced us to their track "Tie Them Down And Get The Answers". Based in South Derbyshire the duo consists of Chris Jones and Hurricane Andrew who modestly described themselves at the time as "two men and a looper". Since then their sound has continued to flourish and grow - stately, ambitious and atmospheric, The People You Will Never Meet builds to a terriffic climax - and was released as a single in July this year as a free download from their Bandcamp. They have upcoming dates this month in London, Leicester and Manchester and their next appearance will be at Huw Stephens' SWN Festival in Cardiff on October 18th.

SCARLETT鈥橲 ROSES - Truth Be Told [starts 35:59]

This lively ska/township hybrid comes from South London combo Scarlett鈥檚 Roses, who play a hometown show for Oxjam on Chiswick High Road on October 20th. So what can I tell you about them ? Erm... "with their honest lyrics and catchy melodies, their unique British sound will have you humming and singing along for days. Essentially they are a pop band, but show elements of ska, soul, hip-hop with a retro sound. They want to take people on a journey, so they feel they are the person in the song. They're telling stories that people can relate to, whilst making them dance and putting a smile on their face. With many gigs already under their belt, Scarlett鈥檚 Roses are bringing their infectious sound to the music world." So now you know.

WILLIE DICK - Deeper Darker Down to the Basement Floor [starts 39:48]

The songs and stories of Glaswegian artist, photgrapher and film maker Willie Dick (pictured above) are darkly gothic: clearly Bleak is the new Black. I'm a sucker for manifestos, and Willie has one of the finest. To quote from it at random: "Yank the social symbols through the looking glass. Devalue society's currency. If the world is false and nothing is true, then everything is possible. Where there is fire, carry gasoline. Make an affirmation of freedom so reckless and unqualified, that it amounts to a total denial of every restraint and limitation. Demonstrate the contrast between what life presently is and what it could be. And Finally鈥 confront the familiar." We have been warned.

NATURAL SELECTION - Push [starts 45:36]

Hiphop group Natural Selction consist of MC Deeflux and producer Brother Beatbox. Together they work with a number of musicians to create foundations which are then sampled, chopped and put back together on an Akai MPC in traditional hiphop fashion. They've worked with underground artists from across the globe such as Wildchild, Guilty Simpson, Sonnyjim, Dr Syntax and many more. And you can see Deeflux co-starring with Genesis Elijah in the irresistible slacker reggae classic I Know which they wrote with producer Louis Unseen - at

SEA STACKS - Dancing With Lions [starts 48:52]

Sea Stacks is the creation of Davy Berryman. Combining orchestral instrumentations to create wind and string-strafed indie music that takes influence from Jonsi/Sigur R贸s and Sufjan Stevens, amongst others. Starting in late June 2011 with just a handful of songs and a studio, Davy set out with only one rule, mostly unbroken that there would be no guitars or pianos used. Seven months, 3 studios, and nearly 40 collaborators later and the first Sea Stacks EP was ready. Live, Sea Stacks perform in various smaller arrangements, from 8-16 players, in and around London.

B>E>A>K - Kehaar [starts 52:46]

Revered as one of the North-East鈥檚 most excentric treasures, B>E>A>K consists of experienced local musicians all heavily involved in the region鈥檚 music scene in bands such as Coal Train, Field Music, Razmataz Lorry Excitement, This Aint Vegas, Boxed Roomer & The Lake Poets. Not to be confised with a similarly named outfit in Bristol, B>E>A>K's members perform masked and brightly colour co-ordinated - as I can personally attest, having seen their stripped-down lineup lead a crowd of late-night revellers down a main street in Sunderland to the tune of Missy Elliott's famous hit Get Your Beak On:

RODEO TERRORISTS - Chill Rex [starts 56:46]

Richard & Mike aka Rodeo Terrorists play around with synthesisers, loops and things that make funny squelchy noises, the result of which are tunes that they quite like. In the summer of 2006 the Rodeo Terrorists got their first computer, it was raining. They got drunk and discovered the simple joys of audio recording. By the mid 80's they were leading a charmed life of singing in a choir, playing the piano and bassoon, while programming sequencers and their Yamaha DX-7. Somewhere along the line they got lost in that field in Hampshire, their jeans went baggy and hair grew long. Finding an abandoned BOSS Dr. Rhythm DR-550 drum machine in a charity shop & overnight they became full time techno ravers. Inspired by the KLF, The Orb, Chicane and 808:State, they aspire to having their music played in a lift or local supermarket but realise that such commercial success would go to their heads and undermine the fundamentally amateur nature of their endeavour.

With amateurism as good as this, who needs professionals?
