Calling All Astronauts
Calling All Astronauts - official promo photo

In the small hours of a Monday morning from 2-3am you can hear a selection of my favourite new tunes compiled into an hour-long mixtape of nonstop music. All the audio is sourced from the 主播大秀 Introducing Uploader - some of it recommended by friends and colleagues and some discovered via Twitter and my own Fresh On The Net blog.

As each show ends at 3am, it becomes available free from the 6 Music Downloads Page - along with archived episodes from the previous four weeks. At the same time the tracklists and start times for each song are published here together with a link to each artist's website. These are the listings for Monday, 26th November 2012:

CALLING ALL ASTRONAUTS - What's So Good (Echoboy Bounce remix)
[starts 00:13]

Calling All Astronauts (above) are politically-charged Alt/Rock 3-piece that take their DIY ethics so seriously they even built their own studio. They have opened for Roger Daltrey and Echo & The Bunnymen among others, and also headlined Alan Magee's Death2Disco at Notting Hill Arts Club. Their debut single Someone Like You was played across the globe, while their follow-up Winter Of Discontent also received a considerable amount of airtime. What's So Good? is scheduled for release on December 2nd. Their debut album Post Modern Conspiracy in out in February with two further singles following in March and May. They have already been confirmed for 2 major festivals in 2013, but in the meantime are having an album launch party at Mother Live in London on December 7th.

THOM MORECROFT - Moon Moon Shake It听 [starts 03:35]

Thom Morecroft is not just a short, excitable, and scruffy young man from Shropshire. He is also a fine addition to a growing cannon of Liverpool-based songwriters whose extensive body of original work has earned him a solid local reputation. In 2012, Thom featured on the hour-long Folkscene with Stan Ambrose on 主播大秀 Radio Merseyside, and was also included on this show. Now 22, he regularly plays live and has recently joined forces with singer Elle Schillereff, percussionist Chris Cousineau and guitarist James Baxter. Thom will release his new album on December 1st and will be performing at the View Two Gallery in Liverpool on the same day to celebrate!

BYE POLAR BEARS - High Tide听 [starts 06:21]

From Trowbridge, Bye Polar Bears consider themselves to be an electronic indie experiment. It鈥檚 difficult to find out much more about them, I鈥檓 afraid, since their website isn鈥檛 fully functional yet. Looks promising, though 鈥

APPLES AND EVE - The Colours And The War [starts 09:32]

Apples & Eve originally formed in 2010 as a duo with Eve Rose (Lead vocals, Guitar and Accordion) & Francine Perry (Drums). They both studied at the same college and discovered each other鈥檚 passion for creating and performing the same kind of music. It wasn鈥檛 long before Apples & Eve started to create a buzz in their hometown of Brighton and were then joined by bassist Graeme Ross (Laura Marling, Peggy Sue, James Morrison) and fiddle player Jonas Aaron (Not Now Bernard). They鈥檒l be performing at the Old Market in Brighton on November 30th.

SILENT CITIES - Haptophic [starts 13:01]

Silent Cities is the project of singer, songwriter, and finger-style guitarist, S. Maddison. Born in County Durham and now based in the North West of England, his most recent collaborations have been with the infamous experimental producer, Mario Leal. He joins Thom Morecroft (see above) at his album launch on December 1st, which is shaping up to be a riotous night.

SPACESHIPS ARE COOL - Blue Birds [starts 16:27]

Nottingham鈥檚 legendary Spaceships Are Cool are that city's self-styled @finest exponents of sci-fi sunshine pop and retro folktronica@. They use an eclectic range of instruments to create their sound, from the Theremin through stylophone to omnichord. This single is available digitally, while you can listen to and download more songs from their website.

MARY CIGARETTES - Middle Class White Trash Ways [starts 20:55]

Another slice of the pure vocal tones and unflinchingly truthful lyrics of one of my longstanding favourite singers, one Mary Cigarettes. 30 years ago, Gregory Gray was the young frontman for Irish band The Perfect Crime. In his present day renaissance as Ms Cigarettes, he tells us his only calling card "is a lifelong passion for writing and recording." You'll find many more of his beautiful songs - all available as free downloads - and links to various videos on his Soundcloud page.

DRUNK MULE - Spread Yer Monsters [starts 24:30]

Drunk Mule - known to their friends and families as Rich Morris and Steve Simpson - describe themselves as 2 lads "makin tunes fae Scotland" yet they're so much more than that. The pair of them make enough noise between them for several entire indie bands, are regular wisecracking visitors to my Fresh On The Net blog and are, I'm delighted to tell you, about to release their first album Crash Test Y'self. It opens with this classic stonker Spread Your Monsters (don't ask) and is selfreleased via their Bandcamp page - striking another decisive blow for 100% independent music.

JOEL PETER - Wrap My Ankles [starts 28:30]

I fell in love with this tune the first time I heard it on Soundcloud, and have grown to love it more in the intervening weeks. Joel Peter describes himself as a Brighton based singer-songwriter "who combines left-field lyrical influences with radio friendly melodies". Well, in this particular case, he got that right. At age 24, he鈥檚 been described by Xenomania founder Brian Higgins, as a 'Genius of his craft'. Londoners can investigate the unknown pleasures of the "Joel Peter Christmas Show" at the Underbelly in Hoxton on December 22nd.

THE BIRDMAN RALLIES - Telescope Katie [starts 32:50]

This is the new single by The Birdman Rallies, taken from the album Moons, which is available to download for free from their website. Formed in the leafy suburbs of Harrogate, they have supported The Joy Formidable, Gruff Rhys, Stornoway and Dry The River, and received plays on 主播大秀 Radio 1, 2 and, of course, 6music. Their next gig is at 1:22 in Huddersfield on December 12th.

PLASTIC FLOWERS - In You I'm Lost [starts 36:10]

A solo project originally, now a duo, Plastic Flowers consist of George and Anjel. They are based in Thessaloniki, Greece, where they use distorted guitars, cheap drum machines and old synthesizers to create their own brand of ethereal lofi pop music. You can see them perform this track on their website, where you can also download it for free.

CORMAC O CAOIMH - A New Season For Love [starts 38:11]

Cormac O Caoimh is a singer-songwriter and classical guitarist from Cork, Ireland. He is also a former member of 鈥楾he Citadels鈥, who received critical acclaim on various releases over the last 10 years. His debut solo album, Stark a Spark, was released in 2007 and received glowing reviews. For his new album "A New Season For Love he re-united with ex-bandmates Art O Laoire and Eoghan Regan, who also were in The Citadels. Cormac has picked up some well-known admirers along the way (including Ron Sexsmith) and has supported Damien Rice, Declan O Rourke, Josh Rouse, Mark Geary, Nick Kelly, Miles Hunt and Damien Dempsey to name but a few. This single was released in April.

MAR KEL THE BADBELLY - LANGuage_HIStory [starts 41:29]

Southampton-based Mar Kel hails originally from Cwmbran and describes himself as "a man who's been on this earth long enough to see and experience a thing or two and is only now putting it in music he likes to call Modern Blues and Beats - there isn't much to write about until you've lived a life" A few months ago he released a first LP called "Set Meal for 1" via his Soundcloud. This song is the story of Mark's life: "my attempt of putting every thought i've ever had in one song" and how that former life ended the day he met his future wife. It's an extraordinary bravura performance - and the other material I've heard of his is equally intriguing. A man to keep centre screen on our radar for 2013.

WHALES IN CUBICLES - Across America [starts 45:19]

After releasing the singles, 'We Never Win' in January and 'Nowhere Flag' in August, our old friends Whales In Cubicles have been recording their debut album, due out for release in 2013. 'Across America' is available as a free download - not only via the Introducing Mixtape this week - but also via the band's own Facebook page. Fronted by Stef Bernadi on vocals and guitar, the rest of the group consists of Leo Weston (drums), Jamie Powell (bass) and Alex Pyper (guitar, keys).

CONRAD VINGOE - Fuel for Fire [starts 50:26]

Conrad Vingoe is an Americana-influenced songwriter based in Brighton. he describes his third album Simple Secrets as "a more personal affair" than his earlier releases, having recorded, produced and mixed it himself. He performs live with a trio which presents a different take on his recorded material. Having performed on the same stage as Seth Lakeman and Jethro Tull at this years Beautiful Days festival, the trio can be heard on their 2012 digital EP One Mic (Live).

FORMES - Absence Of The Noise [starts 54:15]

Formes - you may remember from last time we featured them - are a 4 piece guitar band from Leeds and Dewsbury formed in February this year by Andy Cooper, Jordan McNamara, Dan Schofield and Steve McNamara. The latter, we're told "inject large amounts of tasteless reverb and effects through their guitars to create intense atmospheres and frantic improvised jams". They are supported and warmly endorsed both by Alan Raw on 主播大秀 Introducing in West Yorkshire and our old friend Bethan Elfyn on Amazing Radio. They recorded their debut EP earlier this year at Loom Studios, Birstall with producer Grant Henderson.

EATENBYBEARS
Eatenbybears.

These are the listings for Monday, 19th November 2012:

EATENBYBEARS - Simple As Hell [starts 00:13]

From Belfast, Eatenbybears (above) consist of Olan, Aidan, James and Clark though they don't tell us which is which. They formed in October 2010, having met on the same Queen鈥檚 Universtiy course of Music Technology. This is a single they released in July, and I'd also recommend the followup Your Pet Is Dead which came out earlier this month, and is available for free via . If only they'd read my recent 主播大秀 Introducing blog post on How To Write a Band Biography we might be able to tell you more about this highy promising outfit. Band biogs - or rather, the lack of them - is a subject we'll be forced to revisit several times before this day's work is done...

ROXANNE DE BASTION - Red & White Blood Cells
[starts 04:21]

Roxanne de Bastion鈥檚 compositions range from intimate, lilting anti-folk to raw 60鈥檚 blues-rock. She hails from Berlin and is influenced as much by her travels as her musical heroes John Lennon, Ray Davies, Bob Dylan and Judee Sill. Roxanne has been touring the world on her own since first leaving home with a guitar and a one-way ticket. Her self-released singles have received airplay on a number of 主播大秀 stations. Now she has recorded her debut album with producer Gordon Raphael (The Strokes / Regina Spektor) in her hometown od Berlin, with this track available for download from Soundcloud. She鈥檒l be at the Cookie Jar in Leicester on Tuesday (November 20th), followed by CB2 in Cambridge on Saturday (Nov 24th).

PETER AND THE KIBBUTZNIK - Toys [starts 06:16]

This Gravesend-based duo were first recommended to us on 6 Music Introducing by Huw Stephens at Radio 1 -听 who discovered them thanks to the good offices of Jacob Rickard at 主播大秀 Introducing In Kent. This track is both oddly interesting and interestingly odd 鈥 with its peculiar groove and falsetto vocals 鈥 and comes from their selftitled debut EP which has just been released via their Bandcamp. The fact that they鈥檝e kept this recording at a concise length (2:38) made it even easier for us to slip it into the Mixtapes. Their Peter and the Kibbutznik EP was released last month - with a free download available from .

BARK PRELUDE - Darwin Was Right [starts 08:52]

Bark Prelude are Philip Lewis-Jones, Slim Tim Bick and Eric Childs who respectively inhabit Norwich, Brighton and Andromeda. Despite having lived in Norfolk most of his life Philip is Welsh, but "rarely talks about it or indeed in it". Slim Tim has "never heard anyone start a sentence he didn't think worth interrupting with one of his own" while Eric is "an enigma wrapped in a duvet". Their album Start of Something Minor was recorded in the foothills of Rockland St. Mary, just east of Norwich. Some local farmers have described it as "as a work of crafted sensitivity which has increased milk yield in pigs". Others insist it's been instrumental in causing local crops to fail. There are around 97.3 trillion bands on the internet, claim Bark Prelude,听 but theirs probably features the greatest number of overdubbed handclaps. That's the thing about band biogs - they don't neccessarily need to be truthful - just interesting.

SHE MAKES WAR - Minefields [starts 10:40]

She Makes War is the gloom-pop solo project of the ridiculously over-achieving Laura Kidd 鈥 multi-instrumentalist, visual artist and digital polymath. Having graced stages across the world playing bass and singing for Tricky, A-Ha, The Penelopes, I Blame Coco, The Young Punx and Alex Parks, Laura released her debut album Disarm in September 2010. Minefields is taken from her latest full-length release, Little Battles. I strongly recommend catching her unique live show, which you can do at The Gallimaufry in Bristol on 27th November

TALL FOR JOCKEYS - Loveless [starts 13:57]

This lovely slice of lo-fi driving grunge comes from a Manchester 4-piece whose interests include crap films, Arnie quotes, and cheap Tesco stubbies. We can tell you they support Electric Six at Club Academy in Manchester on December 6th but almost nothing else.

DARK PATRICK - Leaving the Ice Kingdom [starts 18:08]

Dark Patrick consists of Ukrainian Eva and Englishman Paul, who aim to knit together a "complex sound tapestry" from multiple instruments and elements, including a combination of vocals, whistles, harmonicas, hurdy-gurdy, synthesizers, and bandura. You can read extensive descriptions and discussions of what their music sounds like in the 'About' section of their website. Alternatively you can simply fast forward 18 minutes into this week's Mixtape and hear for yourself. This track comes from their concept album Rise of the Underworld which, they assure us, "defies succinct genre classification".

JOOSTVD - Bomb Won't Go Off [starts 22:17]

Joost The Vanished Dutchman is, as you might have guessed, from The Netherlands. Inspired by the likes of Gino Vannelli, Todd Rundgren, Miles Davis, Boz Scaggs, John Martyn, Sting, Terry Callier, he started out as a drummer before turning his hand to writing. His latest album, Art Decoy The Bluebeard Boy, was released in September, and he describes himself as a "zelfbevlekkende, narcistische, selfkickende, obsessieve, uitknijpende liedjesmaker" which loosely translates (I think) as a "self-denigrating, narcissistic, self-flagellating squeezer-out of songs"...

IVORY SEAS - Mothers Tongue [starts 25:49]

Adam Heron (Vocals / Keys / Guitar) and Thomas Walker (Guitar / Vocals / Keys) met at Southampton University whilst studying Fine Art Photography. During their studies, they began to write and demo songs until leaving the south coast for London, where they teamed up with George Latham and Brendan O鈥橞oyle. In 2010 they were guests on 6 Music Introducing under their earlier name of Red Drapes. They recorded their first release as Ivory Seas with Mercury nominated producer Richard Formby in his Leeds studio. The result was their debut single and video Boundary - available as a free audio download. This wonderful new track is set for release on 3rd December, and Londoners can catch them live at the Lexington on December 6th.

CLASSIC PLASTIC - Bucket and Spade Escapade [starts 29:06]

Classic Plastic are fresh out of Brighton. Their web pages provide no other information except that their debut London gig takes place at the George Tavern on November 27th.

LONESOUND - The Great Outdoors [starts 32:25]

This Reading-based project does supply a concise - and helpfully factual - biog. It reads: 鈥Lonesound is me, James Ewers. I鈥檝e assumed an alias.听 I鈥檓 making and releasing my first solo album The Great Outdoors in 3 parts. Part 1 came out in July. Part 2 is released in December and the final part released along with the complete album next spring.鈥 The launch party for the second installment of his opus takes place at the Macbeth in Hoxton, London, on December 6th.

JULIYAA - Stars & Dragons [starts 36:10]

Juliyaa is a half Welsh half Ghanaian singer-songwriter from North London. Having grown up steeped in polyrhythms, she has coined the phrase 鈥楻hythmic Soul鈥 to describe her sound. In late 2011 Juliyaa released her debut single 鈥楾he Rhythm鈥, and went on to win the 2011 GUBA Award for Best New Music Act. In early 2012 she released her second single Smile and launched it with a campaign she dubbed 鈥10 Days of Smile鈥. This iinvolved performing random acts of kindness to others and resulted in national newspaper coverage. The extraordinary Stars & Dragons is unlike anything else I've heard all year and is the title track of her new EP which was released at the beginning of this month.

KILLING FIELDS OF ONTARIO - Left In Shadow [starts 40:01]

Longstanding 6 Music Introducing favourites Killing Fields of Ontario describe themselves as "a folk rock band formerly based in Leeds, but now spread all over the country". Since forming in 2008, they鈥檝e supported acts like Broken Records, Sparrow and the Workshop, Nizlopi, Chris Mills, Otis Gibbs, and Elliot Brood. Their debut single, Cloud, was released in May, while Left In Shadow came out earlier this month. Their next gig is at London's Bull and Gate in Kentish Town on December 4th.

B脡LA TAKES CHASE - Miles Away [starts 43:41]

Originally from Newcastle, Australia, multi-instrumentalist B茅la Chase tells us her childhood consisted of "my parents playing one night of Simon and Garfunkel and the next Bach, then an afternoon of James Taylor and an evening of Debussy. Oh and the Beatles, of course." Further influences came her brother's penchant for RATM and Nirvana, plus her own discovery of Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Bon Iver and Death Cab for Cutie. This track is taken from B茅la鈥檚 new EP Rough Luxe, currently available via the best-known digital outlets. Londoners can catch B茅la Takes Chase live at the Cat and Mutton a week on Thursday (November 29th), followed by The Water Rats the following night.

VOM VORTON - Vampires Will Always Break Your Heart [starts 47:42]

The many musical activities of East Midlands legend Tom Morton have included being singer and guitarist with the splendidly-named Derby indie-pop band Lardpony. When they split up, Tom's name mysteriously acquired two letter V's, for reasons that remain obscure. One of the more interesting activities detailed on the Vom Vorton blog is writing and recording albums in a day - something he last did in August this year. Titles were suggested by people from the community, each song was written & recorded in one hour - and the whole thing is downloadable as a zip file . This topically Vampire-related gem is Mr Vorton's latest single, released earlier this month.

SLY AND REGGIE - Newsflash #14 P.L.E.B [starts 51:18]

Self-defined as purveyors of Middle-Class Dub, Sly and Reggie play reggae and dub from the back of their roving sound system on the back of a black Morris Minor Pickup truck. It just so happens to be the same model that Jamaican reggae legend Charlie Ace used. Their antics have attracted much interest, and they were recently interviewed by The Guardian. Each week they create one or more tracks that add to their series #NEWSFLASH, which explains the somewhat unusual title of this track. They have a weekly residency on Friday nights at the Old Nun鈥檚 Head in South East London.

WINDOW SEATS - Juliette's Letter [starts 55:56]

We start and end this week's Mixtape with bands from Belfast. In this case, Window Seats: a 3-piece formed in 2007 by Jude McCaffrey, Ryan Bradley and Tony Furnell. Juliette's Letter is the follow up to the group's successful debut EP and their music video 鈥淟ocal Superhero鈥 has had widespread airplay and acclaim. They play a hometown gig at the Stiff Kitten in Belfast next month on December 14th

Kleine Schweine - photographed by Tom Robinson
Kleine Schweine - photographed by Tom Robinson

In the small hours of a Monday morning from 2-3am you can hear a selection of my favourite new tunes compiled into an hour-long mixtape of nonstop music. All the audio is sourced from the 主播大秀 Introducing Uploader - some of it recommended by friends and colleagues and some discovered via Twitter and my own Fresh On The Net blog.

From 3am each Monday the latest mixtape is normally available free via the 6 Music Downloads Page - along with archived episodes from the previous 4 weeks. All the tracklists and start times for each song are published below - together with a link to each artist's website. These are the listings for Monday, 12th November 2012:

DORA BRILLIANT - Talk It Up [starts 00:13]

Within the first three seconds of hearing this track in our inbox, London trio Dora Brilliant had already won themselves a place on my . From bar one Talk It Up goes straight for the musical jugular -听 I adored its vital, sharp & energetic musicianship 鈥 and the fact that it didn鈥檛 sound like anything else in the pile. 鈥榮 powerful, clean production doesn鈥檛 show off or draw attention to itself 鈥 you hear the song, not some clever-clever James-Blakey studio shenanigans. The band鈥檚 7-track EP Real Bombing has just been released and can be downloaded for whatever you think it鈥檚 worth 鈥 and frankly this is the kind of tight, classy musicianship that money can鈥檛 buy. Well it can, of course, but in the normal run of things it comes from top international session musicians and comes very, very expensive.

JENNIFER LEFT - Diggory [starts 03:13]

Originally from Newcastle, Jennifer Left is based in Brighton and her career appears to be really taking off with this sharp and upbeat second single - watch the excellent black and white video . Jennifer featured as Steve Lamacq's New Favourite Band on 6 Music just a couple of weeks ago and was interviewed on his show. As a matter of fact she'd do well to transcribe that lively and fascinating conversation to use as her official biog. The current on her website provides no sense of this funny and thoughtful artist and instead is larded with every pompous PR clich茅 in the book: "smoky", "pitch-dark", "poetic", "off-kilter", "undeniable", "breathtaking", "visceral", "infectious", "up-beat", "menacing", "bittersweet", "lush", "stuttered", "compelling", "soaring", "melancholic", "stunning", "visionary", "honest", "fragile"... you get the idea. If you'd actually like to know something interesting and factual about Jennifer and her music, check the audio of her interview with Lammo in full .听 She opens for Martin Rossiter at the Deaf Institute in Manchester on November 25th and London鈥檚 Borderline on the 26th.

KLEINE SCHWEINE - Pride (In The Name Of Yugoslavia) [starts 06:35]

You have to love a Northern political punk band obsessed with Eastern Europe and pork products and I like Kleine Schweine so much I've regularly played them on 6 Music ever since our paths first crossed. To declare an interest, their main profile picture (above) was taken by me on my phone and I sang backing vocals on their debut album 鈥 which is released next month and produced by the excellent Whiskas from Forward Russia. To finance the record on they offered various bonus enticements such as albums, exclusive previews, signed photos, pig masks, sauerkraut and鈥 the chance to sing backing vocals on their album. Well 鈥 who could resist? The launch party took place in their native Leeds at The Well a week last Friday with guests including The Chapman Family, Micky P Kerr, The Reacharounds and Guerin.

ORLANDO - Sleeping Lambs (SMALLFISH Remix) [starts 08:37]

Our friends Orlando are the Barcelona-based duo of Hilary James and John Stuart. You would never guess from the quality and delicacy of their recordings that they were made in a living room using Apple鈥檚 free GarageBand software. This is, they tell us, a remix of their recent scary folk tune, made by the estimable Jonathan Huxtable from 鈥 鈥淟ars von Trier, are you listening?鈥 they ask. I thought of to ask 鈥 before realising I had found a bogus account. if only internationally famous avant-garde Danish film directors were as easy to reach on Twitter as that.

METAL MACHINE MUSIC - Breathing In [starts 12:41]

Darlington electro producer Roz C has the knack of making consistently appealing music - much of which we've enjoyed on 6 Music over the years, combined with a near-pathological disinclination to provide any kind of hard information about his background, his band or his music. Apart from the instruments he uses to make it with. These are, fact fans: a vintage monophonic Roland SH-101 synth, a Casio VL-1 (think Da Da Da by Trio), an unspecified Vocoder, and his own voice. Plus of course the judicous application of software - and plenty of it, from the sound of things.

MAZE HILL- Long Haul [starts 15:03]

Maze Hill is the brainchild of Hoodlums producer Andy Highmore, vocalist Holly Bestic (Field Of Wolves) and singer and spoken word artist Josh Idehen - whose work we've already enjoyed on the mixtape recently with Benin City. "When Josh and Andy first met", we're told "a mutual appreciation of synth-laiden soul and laid back spoken word lead to an intense 2 week writing spree resulting in tens of songs and ideas. They knew they were on to a good thing, and that they needed a singer. A Gumtree advert or two later, and Holly became the final piece of the puzzle. This new trio brings together their influences including Beach House and Grizzly Bear with production delivering reverbed out electronica, and more than a little soul and even elements of jazz." They're signed to the Wah Wah 45 label run by the ever-discriminating Adam Scrimshire.

HEAD OF LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT - Nip It In The Bud [starts 18:09]

Head Of Light Entertainment are an alt.pop band from Teesside in North East England who we first played back in December 2009. Their two albums to date have received airplay on 主播大秀6 Music and 主播大秀 Tees, and many excellent reviews. The band have supported the likes of Hyde & Beast, Mark Morris and Beth Jeans Houghton and they continue to gig around the Northern region. They start work on their third album over the coming months and play The Lord Elgin Bar in Redcar a week on Tuesday - 20th November 2012. Somebody once described their music as "wonderfully original- beautifully sung and produced with rare, lean economy鈥. Oh hold on, that was me.听 听听

IKO - Kites [starts 21:16]

This track comes from Dazed & Confused - the new EP by Exeter band Iko which is released today, Monday 12th November 2012. It was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire by core members Kieran Scragg and Neil Reed who were joined on the sessions by ex-Counting Crows drummer Steve Bowman. Steve was so impressed with the original demos he flew across the Atlantic to play on the recordings. Iko have the distinction of one of their songs being featured on the newly released and final Twilight movie, Twilight Breaking Dawn Pt 2 - in company with acts such as Green Day, Ellie Goulding and Christina Perri. The title track of their EP will also be featured in the new series of Grey's Anatomy. Nice work, those men.

YOUR NEW ANTIQUE - Chemistry [starts 26:27]

This is Huddersfield outfit YNA's current single, which has been supported by Alan Raw at 主播大秀 IIntroducingin Leeds. They have another of those flowery biogs full of adjectives, from which here are a few choice extracts: 鈥渄elivering killer hooks with feverish speed, beguiling power and an expansive sound palette... Dark yet endearing lyrics supplied by deep, baritone vocals, distinct harmonies and thunderous rhythm complete YNA鈥橲 captivating noise... Drawing from influences such as Joy Division, Mogwai, Interpol, Radiohead and The National, YNA conjured their own battle plan: Go out, all guns blazing, equipped with their musicality, strong sense of melody and an added dash of audacity...." So now you know. The music's great though - which is why they've been signed by London label the Animal Farm, who released this single in June.

HOT FEET - Under October [starts 31:21]

Another beautiful recording with clear-as-a-bell folk vocals, immaculate fingerpick guitar and lovely ensemble playing from the whole band. No wonder so many people rated Under October by Hot Feet in their favourite five tracks at my Fresh On The Net blog the other week. Their EP Wood House was written in a cabin on the coast of Sweden and recorded in the remote Scottish Highlands. However its five songs are set in the Cotswolds where Marianne (vocals) tends to goats and sheep when she鈥檚 not playing music, and Lachlan (bass) builds dry stonewalls. The record was produced by , longtime sideman of Laura Marling and a gifted songwriter in his own right. The band are currently on the road promiting said EP: they play Woodbridge tonight (Monday November 12th), followed by shows in London, Ramsgate, Brighton, Bristol, Leeds and Ipswich.

KENWORTHY - Heartache [starts 34:55]

Kenworthy were formed in January 2011, consisting of Jack Kenworthy on Piano, Guitar and Vocals, Dom Potts on Bass and Lee Masters on Drums. The trio started out in Leicester playing well supported gigs at places like The Musician and The Shed, through this they entered the local (OBS) Leicestershire competition held at the two venues. They then went on to win the competition and, for the prize, play at Summer Sundae Festival. Heartache is the opening track from their EP Doors - from which we played the title track earlier this year, while Heartache has been championed by the ever-reliable Dean Jackson, whose show The Beat represents 主播大秀 Introducing in the East Midlands.

CLEFT - Trapdoor [starts 38:21]

A few months ago the world had never heard of this Mancunian instrumental math-rock duo, but since then they鈥檝e pretty much taken Fresh On The Net and the 主播大秀 Introducing Mixtape by storm. It鈥檚 not a genre that often points at the high road to mass popularity, and the warmth with which their music has been received seems to have taken John and Dan by surprise more than anybody. The tightness of their playing and composition skills clearly has a lot to do with it but so do their production skills. There鈥檚 a real art to recording a guitar鈥檔鈥檇rum two piece with overdubs so subtle that the tracks sound wonderful on your hifi, yet still sound exactly like the noise they make live. Their factual yet entertaining biog reveals that Dan discovered the joys of cheese in Brighton, while John had to move away from Lancaster after a bad experience with a three foot garden gnome and a bucket. You couldn鈥檛 make it up. Their debut EP 鈥淯tter鈥 was released in June 2012, and they have a second one 鈥渋n the oven鈥 right now.

SOMETHING BEGINNING WITH L - Say [starts 43:15]

THE LINDSAY TIN - Fire At Will [starts 46:27]

It seems like at least one great new track a week has to emerge from the North East of England on our mixtape, and this deliciously understated gem ticked all the boxes 鈥 with its careful, thoughtful instrumentation and arrangement. The Lindsay Tin is a 鈥渘ew musical endeavour鈥 from Paul Christian Patterson (a founder member of the splendid ) and Paul Jeans (the sole member of ) who began writing together in the early winter months of 2012 in a small attic room in South Shields, overlooking the North East coastline. Astonishingly, given the assurance of this performance, they only played their first gig in July this year. The next is at The Cluny 2 in Newcastle with Hooded Fang and Dead Indians tonight: Monday 12 November 2012. Fire at Will is their debut single, due out on November 26th with an EP to follow in the New Year.

NO CEREMONY - FeelSoLow [starts 49:16]

This is the latest single from the mysterious Mancunian outfit NO CEREMONY/// - whose identity has baffled even The Guardian's New Band Of The Day blog. It's currently available as a free download from their website and has an official release date of a week today - Monday 19th November 2012. We can't tell you any more than that.

5TEVEEBEE - Sophomore Kiss [starts 53:57]

The project of Steve Brady in Portsmouth. "Used to be in a couple of bands, playing hardcore punk, 60's covers, and acoustic rock originals, and while waiting to decide whether to go through the rigmarole of finding new band mates etc, I got a copy of Ableton Live, some samples, an MPK Mini, with the aim to create music I'd want to listen to myself, and fingers crossed a few others would too!" Steve's plan seems to be working just fine, so far :-)

Hailing from North London, Anna Waldmann's music is largely shaped from a background of having to undertake adult responsibilities since she was a child, she was a full time carer for her mum and gran.
