Belarus: Is it the West's business?

Kevin Anderson | 14:51 UK time, Friday, 17 March 2006

As voting starts, the president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, says that any protest would be treated as an act of terrorism.

The EU, the US and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe are concerned about the intimidation of opposition campaigners. But President Lukashenko is telling the west to mind its own business. What do you think?

The head of Belarus' security service has repeated accusations that the opposition plans to use Sunday's election to seize power by force, which opposition candidates deny.

The EU has said that it will impose a travel ban on Belarussian if the elections were not conducted in a democratic manner.

The United States has condemned President Lukashenko as "Europe's last dictator".

Have questions about the elections in Belarus? to find your answers.

What we want to know is if you think the West should continue to pressure Belarus to promote democracy and free and fair elections or if the West should mind its own business. Send us an e-mail or leave your comment here.
