Gay rights in Africa and getting the sack

Rabiya Parekh | 14:25 UK time, Tuesday, 5 September 2006

Homosexuality is illegal in Ghana
Isn't it time Africa accepted gay and lesbian rights? That's what we're asking today. Ghana's government has due to take place there later today.

The Information Minister Kwamena Bartels said, "Government does not condone any such activity which violently offends the culture, morality and heritage of the entire people of Ghana." Do you agree with him?

Our correspondent there says gays and lesbians in Ghana maintain their relationships underground because of the social stigma associated with their sexual orientation.

And earlier this year, awas told by a church leader he is no longer welcome because of his views on homosexuality.

Progression

Last year South Africa's Constitutional Court ruled in favour of same-sex marriages. It ordered that parliament amend marriage laws to allow gay weddings within a year. The constitution outlaws discrimination against gays and lesbians, but social attitudes remain more conservative.

Church groups in South Africa have argued that the issue should be put to a referendum, and say that most South Africans would oppose the legalisation of gay marriages.

If you are in South Africa, do get in touch. South Africa's constitution was the first in the world specifically to outlaw discrimination on the grounds of sexual preference. But just how accepting are people to the change in law?

What's it like being gay or lesbian in Africa? How open can you be about your sexuality? Is greater equality for gays and lesbians a threat to African traditions and customs?

How far would you go to get the sack?

Chelsea football club have accused their French international defender, , of threatening to score an own goal if he was not released from his contract.

Gallas denies the claims and insists the allegations are pure fantasy. But it got us thinking...What have you done or would you do to get yourself the sack? Can it ever be justified? Have you ever taken revenge on your employer or people you work with? What responsibilities does a person have to their colleagues?
