Complaint

Rabiya Parekh | 19:07 UK time, Friday, 3 November 2006

We had a few emails in during the programme questioning our reasons for covering the story of Ted Haggard, the former head of the 30-million-member National Association of Evangelicals in America..He resigned today, in the wake of allegations of gay sex and drug taking that he denies.

I don't think that the allegations are political however covering this non-story in the context of politics is. Shame on you Ö÷²¥´óÐã and everyone else that is making such conclusions.

And Steve in Auckland NZ said this

Ros Atkins repeatedly reminds callers that all allegations against this clergyman are unproven. One wonders whether the Ö÷²¥´óÐã should be having this world-wide debate at all.

It was clear to us in our morning meeting that this was a story that was being talked about a lot amongst Evangelical Christians around the world, and could possibly have an impact on the upcoming mid-term elections in the United States.

There was much discussion during our meeting about whether we should be doing it, since all allegations at the time had been denied.

However, a representative of the New Life Church where Mr Haggard is based has told local media in Colorado that "There has been some admission of indiscretion. Not admission to all of the material that's been discussed, but there is an admission of some guilt."

We felt that since there had been "an admission of some guilt" there was reason to do it, and ask listeners if he should have resigned.

During the first 35 minutes of the show today, we had more than 50 calls from people who wanted to take part.
