Tonight’s topics as blogged by Ruth earlier

Israeli army chief resigns

Barack Obama

Muhammed Ali

Lt Dan Halutz

Michael thinks more should follow Halutz in his resignation

Meir in Jerusalem says Halutz hasn't been treated fairly.

Avital says Halutz was accountable but shouldn't have resigned now.

David Harris from the is our Jerusalem bureau.

Rafi says he was honourable to resign.

Ghadi is calling from Beirut and calls for major changes in the region

James, Brooklyn This is an unfortunate development because his resignation is an indictment of a strategy that placed a measured value on Lebanese life and infrastructure by advocating precise airstrikes over an invasive and devestating ground war. Halutz's successor will not follow the same pattern, which will mean far more civilian casualties in the next war, which will push peace between Lebanon and Israel further off then it is now.

Lubna,Iraq Hi friends,i hope israelis would learn from this that if power was mad and not led by reason, then it will lead to painful results.

Ibikunle Kano Nigeria, I think d General's resignation will serve as a less n 4 commanding officers d need 2 make adeqate prep b4 commitin der men.pls call me.

Sunny, Brighton Yes he was right to resign because he was part of the decision making process, more senior figures should follow as he was not the most senior involved.

A R Shams - Dan Halutz seems right to resign most probably because his morality floated up the surface of his mind. Others should bear some of the blame and resign too, if possible

SamuelNigeria, I think the pm and defence minister should go too.the army chief should not be made a scape goat.

Akele from Nigeria, Anyone who believes this war has weakend Isreal is living in a fool's paradise. All 3 shuld go so dat the country will not become complacent.

Buba in Belgium, Israel like U S rely too much on military power. The only solution is negotiation.

Satya in Mumbai says The Israel military did a fine job of murder and mayhem.

Juhuda says it's not a big story

Barack Obama

is with us from the . He says Obama is 'post-racial'.

We have a great discussion for and against Obama going between U.S. listeners T in Detroit and James in North Carolina. James says a black Republican would have a better shot.

Benin Cincanatti says Mr. Obama will be a very deserving presidential candidate in 2008. He will provide exactly what this country needs in a leader - The Truth!

Steven Taylor, there is no doubt that Obama is an attractive candidate. If anything he comes across as likable and he gives an excellent speech.

Sammy in Dar es Salaam, I do not expect to see a black president before a red indians warm up the white house

Laura, in our great country, the land of all possibility, Barack Hussein Obama, a man with wisdom and vision and promise, has what it takes to pick up the torch and run with it. And thus he should.

Erin, Niger Listening to Sen. Obama at the 2004 Dem. Convention was the most inspiring part of that week. I for one cannot wait to cast my absentee ballot for him in the 2008 primaries.

Sheikh Dukuly of Monrovia, Barak's presidential ambition is a farce. The American people are not prepared for an African-American president.

Reuben in Nairobi says Barack will win the nomination of the Democrats but Americans will vote with the Republicans. It will change a lot of things in Africa. There's even a beer named after him!

Suzie in Nairobi says the beer is good and affordable!

Vwegba in university of benin nigeria. No black man will be president of america at least not for about forty years. It is just a dream.

Obed from Ghana, its hightime the US test a black man's intellect and leadership.

Uncle steven in bombo, ugandaObama president of the usa. Hurrah ! ! !. What a dream.this is not possible.

Njeri in Kenya, the name Barack is a corruption of the Swahili word for Blessing. I think HE will need all of Gods blessings to win over the South.

Laurence from Philadelphia, I truly believe the US is ready for a black president.

Uche , an African-American, when you bring race into it you have no chance in the south.

Candadai says Colin Powell, leader of American military forces and war hero, was seriously proposed as a Presidential candidate but the nomination did not, finally, take off. Barack Obama has more political weight behind him. Election to the Presidency will signal the full arrival of the African American in the land to which his ancestors were forcibly brought some centuries ago.

Elle Seymour, UK writes on her blog PROACTIVE PR that Obama has had an astounding and meteoric rise in politics, having spent only two years in the Senate.

Doreen in Vermont says..
The world should pray that this man is the next President! I hope Americans make ammends to the world by electing an intelligent and principled man!

Laurie in London As an ex-patriate black American, I can almost guarantee that there is more chance of Beyonce Knowles becoming the Princess of Wales than Mr Obama becoming the 44th president of the United States. America likes black people who assimilate but they still prefer to keep them at a safe distance.

Bernie in Alberta says Obama will go far, but he will never be president because he's black! The only people to be presidents will be old white men.

Travis, Ohio thinks it is a huge mistake on his part that he has taken his first big step towards a presidential run. "I love his ideas and politics and I recognize his political talent, but a 08 run for the white house is too early for him."

Margot from US means he is so young. "I am not sure that now is the best time. Maybe vice president now, and president later."

Jamesin Denver writes I am all up Obama being President
The problem is that in the fickle and still segregated society that is: the United states of America - 40% of the population will not be listening to what he has to say but will look at at the colour of his skin

Noel in Australia says Unfortunately the Americans are not ready for a woman, black, Indian or any other minority to lead them.

Tracia commented at PATAGON.NET that she hasn't fallen in love with Obama. She seems to be immune. "I just wish I could figure out what it is that's putting me off", she says.

Boizy Sandy. Freetown, Sierra Leone, Kofi Anan the Ghania was the first black African UN Sec. General. Now is the Kanyian Mr. Obama going to take the American Presidency. Africa will soon b e the next world super power. F

Susannah says Obama is one of the great orators of our time. But he is not ready to be a great leader. Obama is still an infant in the domestic and international political scene.

Karta Yu Tema, Ghana. The USA may be ready for a black president but not a muslim one.

mansour of monrovia Pls tell senator obama to stop wasting his time america don't need a black president.

Farah FROM WASHINGTON is a native African and proud of Obama's political achievements in America but he doesn't believe that most Americans (particulary Southern whites) are ready to elect a black man.

Cory from Portland, Oregon means while Obama may be a good man, he is relativly new to politics. "I believe this to be his downfall as he will not know how to use the system to his advantage".

Muhammed Ali

Tommi, United Kingdom, Simply describing Muhammed Ali as the "GREATEST" does not do him justice. A colossal athlete, amazing personality & did more to challenge & break down race barriers than most politicians & do-gooders. His anti-Vietnam war stance reflected a generation's feelings.

David in the UK, the Mohammed Ali I remember from when I was growing up was an extremely arrogant man with a huge chip on his shoulder, and a hatred of white people. In my opinion, the guy just couldn't punch. Give me George Foreman every time. He's a great man and a great boxer.

Terry, Vancouver, Canada. As a hockey crazy kid growing up in Canada in the 60's it took somebody of huge importance to get top billing amongst the pictures of my sports heroes on the bedroom wall. That hero was Muhammad Ali. When he said the Vietnam War was wrong I said: That must be true because the toughest man in the world said it was wrong.

Ken, London. He tickled and amused the white middle class with his loud mouth. He was ungracious to his opponents, calling them racist terms such as 'gorilla' or 'uncle Tom' etc. He got lucky: he somehow played his card right and became the darling of the white middle class. AS to Vietnam, it jsut showed his small-minded ignorance and his lack of care about Southern Vietnamese people.

Derek UK, the sign of a great champion and a decent person is humility. There was nothing of this in Muhammad Ali. His outbursts were more laughable than witt. If you must have an idol get another.

Irfan in South Africa, Any man prepared to sacrifice so much for what he believes has to considered amongst the Greatest to have ever walked the earth. Those who deny this need only consider what they would have done in a country that treated blacks as slaves but signed them up to fight their racist war in Vietnam.

Noneof in the UK, he was a decent boxer and a world class show off!! Cant say im that fussed.....

Ray in Malawi, Muhammad Ali is no doubt the greatest and has become a legendary father figure not only to African Americans but to Africans as well. Happy birthday!

E Mily, NY, I had the enormous pleasure, while standing outside my office on Broadwayway, to meet MA. He got out of a cab, saw me staring at him and approached ME with an outstreched hand. His tremors were bad so he couldn't talk, but the warmth and twinkle in his eyes and his still gorgeous face said more than words ever could. He is class, grace, beauty and kindness.

Tanimu Umar Nigeria. There's no disputing the fact that Ali is the Greatest. To me,he might not be the greatest sportsman, but he's certainly the greatest boxer.

Boizy Sandy, Kono, Sierra Leone Mohamed Alie is the best greatest boxer that have ever lived on earth.

Ed, Italy, When I married my mother-in-law gave us an icon of the Virgin Mary to hang above the bed. I switched it for my poster of Ali. The mother-in-law has never forgiven me, but my wife - well she is still my wife.
