War, Weddings and Gays . . .
Sounds like the new Richard Curtis film but no, it's the menu for tonight's show: Congress debates Iraq this afternoon and as I write the new security plan in that troubled country is biting: they've closed the borders with Syria and Iran. We'll also touch on the gay NBA player who has come out but only after he finished playing. And weddings: how much is enough? We in the West are now reaching obscene levels of outlay when planning a wedding but church officials are saying it's time to reign in the spending. . . read on . . .
The US Congress debate on Iraq
It's due to get underway in a few hours, and finish on Friday. Hundreds of Congressmen and women will be given 5 minutes to spell out their position on the President's wish to send more US troops to Iraq. It's a purely symbolic debate and vote, but should it be? Is that what Americans voted for in the November midterms? Wherever you are in the world, we want to know - what message do you think Congress should be sending on Iraq? If you're in America, what do you want to hear your representative say? And is it possible to be anti-war and still support those US troops that are serving in Iraq ?
Gay and lesbian sportspeople
The former NBA player John Amaechi has caused a big debate in the US by coming out in his new book, some years after he finished playing top level basketball. But why are there virtually no out and out gays and lesbians playing sport at the highest level? Is it because the public don't allow it, and if so, how about you - do you mind if your sporting hero is homosexual? And will anything change until top players confront prejudice while they're still playing? We'll try and get John Amaechi on the show - we're making those phone calls right now.
How expensive was your wedding?
Did it threaten to bankrupt you or your family? The Church of England is trying to encourage cut-price weddings, using cabs rather than limos, getting guests to bring their own flowers, and suggesting women buy that special dress from a charity (thrift) shop! Will it ever work? And if not, why not?
