Globetrotting - to Harlem next

| 14:08 UK time, Thursday, 8 March 2007

Sylvias Soul Food restaurantOn Wednesday 21st March, we’re broadcasting from in Harlem.

What springs to mind when you think of Harlem? According to ’s…

…a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan, long known as a major black cultural and business center. After being associated for much of the twentieth century with black culture, but also crime and poverty, it is now experiencing a social and economic renaissance.

To me, Harlem means, , , the …

, and all started life here, and it’s - an unprecedented outburst of creative activity - in the 1920’s and 30’s is well documented.

Sylvia’s Soul Food restaurant is a Harlem landmark, a family run business that’s been serving up southern style food to the community since 1962.

says it’s a place “where you can actually meet people of many nationalities and cultures from around the world”. Sounds perfect to us, and we’re very much looking forward to the introduction to the local people, and food!

Ros has a busy week on his hands, so for this show, we’ve signed up to assist with presenting duties. He’s a rapper from Staten Island who joined us on the programme back in January. He’d caused a bit of a stir with his song “Y’all should all get lynched”, and his comments that black people should stop disrespecting each other by using the word “nigger”.

The city council of New York , I’m sure NY Oil will have plenty to say on this….

He was a fantastic guest and we’re very pleased to be meeting him in person whilst we’re on his home turf.

As always, we will talk about what the audience wants to talk about - if you live in the area and would like to come along, please e-mail me directly and I will be in touch. anna.stewart@bbc.co.uk
