Le Bulldozer
The man who served the past 2 terms in the Elysee Palace will hand over to Sarko today. How will you remember Jacques Chirac (whose nickname during his 12 years was Le Bulldozer)? Do you lean to the bullish or more to the doze? Was the Chirac legacy a time of stagnation, as some have suggested, or robust development? Let us know.

Jacques Chirac to me will be the embodiment of hubris, the large man elboweing his way to front-row centre whenever the European first ministers lined up for a group photograph. He has presided over an unfortunate period of French decline with persistent high unemployment, exacerbated by the serious social divisions starting to emerge. He also leaves office facing a potential prosecution for embezzlement of public funds during his period as Mayor of Paris. He also insulted Finnish cooking!

It's hard to avoid talking about Palestine. Infighting between Hamas and Fatah is causing grief on a large scale. Hamas have stormed a Fatah security chief's home this morning and killed 6 guards. I'm watching CNN as I type and they are listing the various forces that are currently loyal to the two factions . . . Fatah have: The National Security Force which incl. the presidential guard; the Palestinian Police Force; The Preventative Forces; the Al Aqsa martyrs brigade and the PLO Badr Brigade. Hamas have: The Executive Forces; the Izz el Deen Brigade and the Popular Resistance Comittee.
All these groups have one thing in common - they are armed. Is there a way out?
