Monday - Caliphate, Catholics, Climate

James Harrod | 09:30 UK time, Monday, 13 August 2007

Hello and welcome to the start of another week on World Have Your Say. Lots of good talking points today. You thoughts - as ever - please. And if you want to join our meeting with your own idea, call +44 207 557 0635 and we'll call you straight back.

Is a single Muslim state viable? Over the weekend, at a football stadium in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, to discuss the re-establishment of an Islamic Caliphate - a form of governence which aims to represent Muslims worldwide. The Islamist political group, organised the conference - an organisation that is banned in a number of countries. Would a Caliphate work today? And how would it be implemented across so many different denominations?

What else is grabbing our attention?...

...According to , Amnesty International is set to back abortion for rape victims. The decision is set to anger Catholics across the world. The Vatican is accusing Amnesty of double standards, because it opposes the death penalty in all circumstances but, it argues, under some circumstances will now condone the killing of an unborn child. What do you think?

... Should the west talk to moderate members of Hamas? A between itself and the Palestinian militant group, which effectively controls Gaza. They say it's "counterproductive" to ignore Hamas. Are they right? We did a programme on this subject about 5 weeks ago - after our colleague and friend Alan Johnston was released from Gaza. Should we return to it today?

We may pop down to Heathrow Airport today. Not for a WHYS holiday (although that would be marrrrrrrvelous), but to check the mood of . They're campaigning against a rise in air travel, saying the airline business is contributing to climate change. It marks the start of a week-long series of protests there. It's the world's busiest airport and it's certainly getting a lot of press here. BAA (the airport operator) says anyone caught distracting their staff from maintaining security will be arrested. So far, police have taken a softly-softly approach to handling the demonstrators. So, is this an effective way of protesting? And how much is air travel damaging the environment?

Top White House political adviser Karl Rove, who masterminded President George W. Bush's political campaigns in 2000 and 2004 is to quit. According to , he's quitting "for the sake of his family".

The head of the African Union says the peacekeeping force going to Darfur will be made up . The UN had expected to call on Asian troops. Critics say Africa lacks enough trained troops for an effective force. There is fear in some quarters whether African nations would have the political commitment to stand alone against the forces seeking to continue to disrupt lives in Darfur.

To Chicago in the States now where the nation's largest Lutheran denomination has urged its who are in committed same-sex relationships. It marks a huge change, and could shift the future of the church's position on sexuality. For church advocates who support inclusion of gays in the church, the resolution was hailed a step toward full inclusion of homosexuals in the church. But conservative leaders predicted the resolution would open the door to chaos. What do you think?

One of America's civil rights pioneers, , has died at the age of 90. In 1944, Mrs Kirkaldy refused to give up her seat on Greyhound bus to a white couple - an act which led to a landmark Supreme Court ruling against segregation on inter-state transport. Mrs Kirkaldy's defiance came more than a decade before a similar protest on a bus by Rosa Parks and was a key precedent for civil rights lawyers. How important is her legacy?

How much control should broadcasters have over a music gig? A company during a webcast by US-group Pearl Jam. The group has reacted angrily at AT&T - it raises censorship issues of course. An end item on the show later?

Oh, and one more thing - a shameless plug for this WHYS show on 24th August.
