Uganda : Where watching the football was a matter of life and death

Mark Sandell Mark Sandell | 13:35 UK time, Monday, 12 July 2010

ugandavictim.jpgAt least 74 people have been killed and easily as many injured afterrocked the capital, Kampala - aimed at people crowded into a club and restaurant to watch the World Cup Final.

ugandahospital.jpgSomali's have been blamed for the atrocities - Ugandan peacekeepers operate in Mogadishu, Somalia, and al-Shabab - linked to al-Qaeda - has threatened to hit Kampala in the past.

One witness told the Ö÷²¥´óÐã...

I just heard the bomb. In fact, I was blacked out, I didn't know anything. I was just down on the grass, I didn't know anything until when I gained consciousness, then I started now, crawling, coming out

and here's what the Ö÷²¥´óÐã's correspondent there - Joshua Mmali - told us :

"Nobody expected this to happen in a World Cup final. One would have thought that whoever did this would have waited for another time. It is just a time when people are making merry and very excited about the World Cup final, then this happens. It is quite shocking ".

Conversely, here's what Sheik Yusuf Sheik Issa - a military commander in Mogadishu - told Associated Press :

"Uganda is one of our enemies. Whatever makes them cry, makes us happy. May Allah's anger be upon those who are against us."

US President Barack Obama said the explosions were "deplorable and cowardly".

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the US would work with the Ugandan government "to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice".

We'll be speaking to people in Uganda on today's WHYS and as always , we want your reaction.
