Let's Brainstorm, yeah?

Kate Wincup | 10:38 UK time, Wednesday, 25 April 2007

Last week I took part in a writing residential here at the Ö÷²¥´óÐã. Myself and eight other writers worked on new ideas for TV and radio, as well as ideas that could be carried across to the internet. All the technical talk did make my brain hurt at first, but it was really interesting to have to try and think outside the box. We had loads of discussions and talks from real writers(!) about creating a whole world for your characters' to live in, which was great. I don't know if I liked it as much as the free wine, but I've definitely refreshed my own knowledge as well as learning a lot of new tips. On the last day we had to present our ideas in groups of three, which was terrifying but amazingly we pulled it off. We had to put together a visual pitch with the aid of a video camera - it was brilliant to try and get our characters on their feet and improvise situations with them. I defintely need one, and if I don't come up with anything I can just film myself setting the kitchen alight and send it to You've Been Framed.

I was consoled by the fact that ours was the best.

I've already sent the deleted scene to You've Been Framed, although -fingers crossed - Harry may choose it for TV Burp.

Hello, Myself and two friends have invented a new comedy concept which has us rolling in the aisles. It's an idea that seems to mould into any comedy situation or earnest one.But they are only sketches and we have hundreds from two seconds to five minutes. It also takes a poke at society the greed and merchandising, politics, green issues or things that happen on your doorstep, it so neatly wrapped up it's like a brand name but I haven't found anywhere in the Ö÷²¥´óÐã to accept it,do you have any advice? Thanks for your time, Alan

I'm afraid there isn't really a dedicated place to submit unsolicited sketch material at the Ö÷²¥´óÐã. We don't accept them at writersroom - we only deal with narrative comedy. You can submit work to Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio Entertainment (www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/writing/submissions_other_radioents) and it might be worth looking at the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Comedy Soup website (www.bbc.co.uk/comedysoup). You need to remember that many sketch shows are performer led and written by the performers - which means there is rarely scope to submit unsolicited ideas. It's also often the case that sketch shows start out as live shows - for example, Little Britain.
